A guide to legal car modifications in New Mexico

Whether you live in New Mexico or are moving to the area, there are vehicle modification regulations you need to be aware of. Compliance with the following laws will help ensure that your vehicle is legal on New Mexico highways.
Sounds and noise
The state of New Mexico has regulations regarding sounds from the radios and mufflers in your vehicle.
Sound systems
New Mexico requires the following decibel levels to be met in certain areas:
57 decibels in areas or lands where silence and serenity are important factors in its intended use (these areas are not defined)
67 decibels in areas around public places such as schools, parks, hospitals, libraries, playgrounds and homes.
72 decibels on built-up land or property
Muffler
Mufflers are required on all vehicles and must be in working order to limit unusually loud or excessive noise.
Silencer lines, cut-outs and similar devices are not permitted on motorways.

Frame and suspension
New Mexico has no frame, bumper or suspension height restrictions. The only requirement is that vehicles must not be taller than 14 feet.
ENGINES
There are no engine modification or replacement regulations in New Mexico, but emissions checks are required for those who live in Albuquerque or commute.
Lighting and windows
Lanterns
- Two spotlights are allowed.
- Two auxiliary lights are allowed (one near, one far).
Window tinting
The windshield may have a non-reflective tint above the manufacturer's AS-1 line or the top five inches, whichever comes first.
Tinted front, rear and rear windows should let in 20% of the light.
Side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.
A sticker is required between the glass and the film on the driver's door indicating the permitted tint levels.
Vintage/classic car modifications
New Mexico has no regulations on historic or vintage vehicles. However, year plates are available for vehicles over 30 years old.
