Regular mirrors on the classic "six" have never been particularly convenient, so motorists at the first opportunity try to change them for something more acceptable. What are the alternatives? Let's try to figure it out.
Description of regular mirrors VAZ 2106
The design of both the interior mirror and the two exterior mirrors on the "six" has no fundamental differences. The mirrors are based on a rectangular mirror element mounted in a soft plastic frame, which, in turn, is inserted into the rectangular mirror body.
All housings have a small swivel hole that secures the mirrors to their support legs. The hinge allows the driver to change the angle of the mirrors, adjusting them for themselves and achieving the best view.
The number of mirrors and the need for a right mirror
The standard "six" has three rear-view mirrors. One mirror is in the cabin, another pair is located outside, on the body of the car. Many novice motorists have a question: is it necessary to have a right rear-view mirror? Answer: yes, it is necessary.
The fact is that the driver, looking in the rear-view mirrors, not only assesses the situation behind the car. Mirrors help to better feel the dimensions of the car. A novice driver, who first sat behind the wheel of a "six", feels the left dimension of the car very badly, and does not feel the right dimension at all. - The undoubted advantage of F1 mirrors is their modern appearance;
- mirrors of this type are adjusted from the cab using a special lever. This moment for the driver becomes especially relevant in bad weather;
- but the review of F1 mirrors leaves much to be desired, since the area of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbthe mirror element is small. As a result, the driver now and then has to adjust the mirrors. This happens every time the driver moves the seat slightly or changes the backrest angle.
Mirrors of universal type
At the moment, the widest range of universal rear-view mirrors for the VAZ 2106 is presented on the spare parts market. They differ both in quality and in manufacturer. In addition, the methods of fastening can also differ significantly. When choosing a universal mirror, it makes sense for a novice driver to focus on a standard triangle mount. And only after that look at the appearance of the mirror and viewing angles. It should be noted that the "behind the frame" mount has never been reliable. Over time, any fastener can weaken. Once this happens with the bolts in the hinges, the mirror will pop out of the case and almost certainly break. And this is another argument in favor of stopping at the fastener in the form of a triangle.

Large mirrors from Niva
Some drivers prefer to take a radical approach to improving the visibility of mirrors. And they install vertical rear-view mirrors on their “six” (they are also called “burdocks”). Now native "burdocks" for the "six" are not so easy to find on sale, although just three years ago the shelves were littered with them. But the drivers found a way out: they began to install large mirrors from the Niva (VAZ 2106) on the VAZ 2121. The review after installing such mirrors really improves. But to call such a decision beautiful, alas, it does not work: the mirrors from the Niva on the VAZ 2106 look too bulky.
You can attach such "burdocks" to the "six" using a standard triangle. Only in this case you will have to take two brackets from the VAZ 2106 and Niva mirrors and make new fasteners for a large mirror from them.
Here we should also mention the new mirrors. As you know, relatively recently the Niva car was updated. This also applies to rear-view mirrors. And if the motorist has a choice, then it is better to install mirrors from the new Niva on the "six".
Despite their small size, they have a good overview. With fastening, too, there will be no big problems: it's still the same standard triangle, in which you have to drill one extra hole.
How to disassemble a regular mirror VAZ 2106
To disassemble the regular mirror of the "six", no special skills are required, and from the tools you only need a thin screwdriver with a flat sting.
- The mirror is removed from the hinge. This is done manually. The mirror must be taken by the frame and pulled with force in a direction strictly perpendicular to the car body. The hinge will disengage and the mirror will be released.To remove the mirror from the hinge, simply pull hard in a direction perpendicular to the machine body.
- The tip of a flat screwdriver is pushed under the plastic edging of the mirror (it is best to do this from the corner). Then the screwdriver moves around the perimeter of the mirror until the entire edging is removed.A small thin screwdriver with a flat blade is ideal for removing the edging.
- After that, the rear wall of the mirror is separated from the mirror element. There are no additional fasteners in the regular mirror.After removing the edging, the mirror element is manually removed from the body
- The mirror is assembled in the reverse order.
About chrome plating of rear-view mirror housings
Some drivers, trying to give the mirrors of their "six" a more presentable appearance, chrome their bodies. The easiest option to get a chrome mirror housing is to go out and buy one. The problem is that chrome-plated cases for VAZ 2106 mirrors can be found far from everywhere. Therefore, drivers choose the second option, and chrome the cases themselves. There are two ways for this:
- you can simply stick a vinyl film with a “chrome look” surface on the body. This is fast, but the vinyl film is neither durable nor wear resistant;
- you can paint the case with paint with the addition of chrome, and apply a layer of varnish on top. This is a more durable, but also more time-consuming version of chrome plating.

Sticking the film on the mirror body
The following tools and supplies are required for applying vinyl film:
- roller with a rubberized surface;
- vinyl film "under chrome";
- stationery knife;
- marker;
- building hair dryer.
Sequence of operations
Before starting work, the mirrors are removed from the car. All contaminants are removed from the surface of the housings. To do this, use a damp clean rag. Then the mirror elements are removed from the cases.
- The film is applied to the mirror, with the help of a marker the contours of the body are outlined. Then a piece of vinyl is cut in such a way that its size is approximately 10% larger than necessary (these 10% will be tucked under the edging).
- It is necessary to remove the substrate from the cut piece of film.
- After that, a piece of film is heated with a building hair dryer. The heating temperature is about 50°C.It is best to warm up the vinyl film with the help of a partner.
- Heated vinyl stretches well. Carefully stretched and held at the corners, the film is applied to the mirror body. During this procedure, it is necessary to ensure that as few air bubbles as possible remain under the film, and no wrinkles occur.The film is first pressed in the center, and then along the edges
- Since the appearance of bubbles can not always be avoided, the surface of the film must be carefully smoothed with a roller. If the air bubble cannot be "expelled" from under the film with a roller, it must be reheated with a hairdryer. This will make the bubbles move.
- After complete smoothing, the film sticking out along the edges of the case is wrapped around its edges, under the plastic edging. The rolled edges are warmed up again and smoothed with a roller, which ensures the most dense bonding of the edges of the film and the case.
- Now you need to let the body cool for an hour. And you can install the mirror elements in place.
Mirror body painting
Before starting work, make sure that the room is well ventilated and there are no open sources of fire nearby. Also, personal protective equipment should not be neglected. You need goggles, a respirator and gloves. In addition, the following things will be needed:
- black primer for plastic surfaces;
- car varnish;
- degreasing compound;
- fine sandpaper;
- polishing wipes.
Sequence of operations
First, the mirror must be removed from the car. No special tools are required for this. Then the mirror is disassembled according to the instructions given above.
- The case from which the mirror element is removed is carefully cleaned with fine sandpaper. This is necessary for matting the surface.Before applying the degreasing composition, the mirror body is carefully cleaned with sandpaper.
- After stripping, the body is treated with a degreasing compound. Now you need to wait for the surface to dry completely. It takes from 20 minutes to half an hour (you can use a building hair dryer to speed up this process).
- After the composition has dried, the mirror body is coated with a primer.
- When the primer dries, a thin layer of automotive varnish is applied to it.
- The dry lacquered surface is polished with napkins. This stage should be taken seriously, since the quality of the final coating depends on it. In no case should you touch the polished surface with your hands. Even a small fingerprint left on it will be visible after applying the paint.
- Now the mirror body is painted with chrome. It is best to do this with a spray gun, in several steps, so that there are at least two layers, and even better - three.
- It may take a day for the paint to dry completely (it all depends on the brand of paint, the time for complete drying must be indicated on the can).After applying the paint, the mirrors must be allowed to dry properly.
- When the paint dries, the surface is varnished again and carefully polished.
Cabin mirrors VAZ 2106
The purpose of the interior mirror on the "six" is obvious: with its help, the driver can see those sections of the road that are not in the field of view of the exterior rear-view mirrors. First of all, this is the section of the road located directly behind the car. Cabin mirrors on the VAZ 2106 may be different.
Standard interior mirror
A standard VAZ 2106 mirror is mounted on a leg, which is fixed with two self-tapping screws in the opening between the solar shields. Like the exterior mirrors, the standard interior mirror has a housing with a hole for the hinge. The case contains a mirror element.
The hinge allows the driver to change the angle of the mirror, adjusting the viewing area. In addition, the mirror housing has a switch that allows you to put the mirror in "night" and "day" modes. Despite all these points, the standard mirror has a rather narrow field of view. Therefore, drivers, at the first opportunity, change this mirror to something more acceptable.
Panoramic interior mirror
Drivers often refer to panoramic interior mirrors as "half lenses" because of their characteristic shape. One of the main conveniences associated with panoramic mirrors is their mounting method.
There are small clamps on the mirrors, with the help of which the “half-lens” can be attached directly to the standard mirror without removing it. Panoramic mirrors have both pros and cons:
- the mirror has a slightly curved C-shape, which significantly expands the viewing angles, allowing you to capture even part of the dead zones;
- panoramic mirrors are provided with protective coatings, which can be either anti-reflective, or dimming, or, on the contrary, brightening (the latter option is especially convenient for drivers who prefer to tint the rear window).
- but panoramic mirrors have one significant disadvantage: they are not suitable for novice drivers. In the panoramic mirror, the distance to the nearest car coming from behind always seems to be greater than it actually is. Experienced drivers remember this, but beginners often forget.
Mirror with built-in video recorder
Mirrors with video recorders on the "six" began to be installed about five years ago. Many motorists consider this option to be more preferable than buying a full-fledged registrar.
There is a certain logic in this: since when using such a mirror there is no need to install additional devices on the windshield, the driver's view is not limited. The picture broadcast by the built-in registrar is displayed directly on the surface of the rear-view mirror, usually on the left side.
Mirror with integrated display
Mirrors with built-in displays have appeared relatively recently. They are installed on the "sixes" by the most advanced motorists.
