The most reliable cars in the world 2014 - our rating

A reliable car - any driver dreams of just such a car. What is invested in the concept of "reliability of the car"? According to the definition from a large encyclopedic dictionary, reliability is the whole set of characteristics due to which the car can be used for its intended purpose, that is, drive it, and the longer the car can be on wheels, the more reliable it is.

Also, one of the most important characteristics of the car is its recoverability - maintainability.

No matter how reliable and expensive a car is, it needs maintenance. So, on the basis of these factors, various car reliability ratings are compiled, and their results can be completely different, depending on the country in which the analysis was carried out and on what grounds the reliability was assessed.

One of the most revealing ratings is the study of the American Association JD Power. Experts conduct surveys among owners whose cars have been in operation for more than three years. This is understandable, because it is impossible to determine the reliability of a brand new car, it will be a biased analysis. By the way, the company has been doing such surveys for 25 years.

Drivers are offered to fill out a questionnaire in which they must indicate what kind of breakdowns they had to meet during the last year of operation. As of early 2014, the results are quite interesting.

Japan ranked first in terms of reliability. Lexusleaving all other competitors far behind. There are an average of 100 breakdowns per 68 vehicles. Lexus has held the top spot for several years in a row.

Then the places were distributed as follows:

  • Mercedes - 104 breakdowns;
  • Cadillac - 107;
  • Japanese Acura - 109;
  • Buick - 112;
  • Honda, Lincoln and Toyota - 114 breakdowns per hundred cars.

Then a serious gap of ten breakdowns is formed, and Porsche and Infiniti close the top ten - 125 and 128 breakdowns per hundred, respectively.

As you can see, Japanese cars are leaders in quality and reliability, overtaking the products of the German and American auto industries. For example, German BMWs, Audis and Volkswagens are ranked 11th, 19th and 24th in terms of reliability. Ford, Hyundai, Chrysler, Chevrolet, Dodge, Mitsubishi, Volvo, Kia also entered the top thirty.

According to this rating, the average percentage of breakdowns per hundred cars is 133, that is, even a small repair, but it will have to be done once a year for an average car in terms of reliability.

However, do not be disappointed if your car does not appear in this rating. After all, the survey was conducted in the United States and the preferences of American drivers are slightly different from Russian ones.

The picture that the experts of the German publication Auto-Bild received together with the TUV technical control institute looks a little different. Several million vehicles were analyzed in several categories:

  • new models that are in operation for 2-3 years;
  • 4-5 years old;
  • 6-7 years.

Among the new cars, the crossover Opel Meriva became the leader, the percentage of breakdowns for it was 4,2. Behind him are:

  • Mazda 2;
  • Toyota iQ;
  • Porsche 911;
  • BMW Z4;
  • Audi Q5 and Audi A3;
  • Mercedes GLK;
  • Toyota Avensis;
  • Mazda 3.

Among cars aged 4-5 years, the leaders are: Toyota Prius, Ford Kuga, Porsche Cayenne. Toyota Prius also became the leader among older cars, the percentage of breakdowns was 9,9 for it - and this is not bad at all for a car that has been on the roads for 7 years.

Of course, the quality of German roads is several times higher than the quality of Russian roads, but the results of this rating can be used when choosing a car. Inexpensive models popular in Russia - Ford Fiesta, Toyota Auris, Opel Corsa, Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, and even Dacia Logan - also appear in the rating, although the percentage of their breakdowns ranges from 8,5 to 19.
