Failure? Toyota will not seek a safety rating for the 2022 Toyota LandCruiser Series 300 GR Sport or any future GR Performance models.

The GR Sport features a unique suspension setup that sets it apart from other LandCruiser 300 Series variants.

Toyota Australia says it is not going to offer the GR Sport variant of its LandCruiser 300 Series for crash safety testing due to expected low volumes.

Earlier this week, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) awarded the newly launched LandCruiser 300 Series SUV with a maximum five-star rating.

The rating applies to all variants, including the GX, GXL, VX, Sahara and Sahara ZX, but does not apply to the GR Sport, which will not be rated.

ANCAP says testing is "underway on a variant of the base model, and manufacturers may apply to extend the rating to other variants by providing ANCAP with the necessary technical information for review."

Cars Guide understands that Toyota did not provide additional information regarding the GR Sport for the ANCAP tests.

In a statement from the manufacturer, Toyota says it will not seek ANCAP ratings for the LandCruiser 300 GR Sport or any model or variant bearing the GR sub-brand brand.

“The LandCruiser GR Sport class has not been evaluated as part of the ANCAP assessment of this model, but the GR Sport has the same or better safety performance as other five-star rated LC300 variants,” the spokesman said.

"Toyota Australia has no intention of seeking a ranking for GR sub-brand models, including the GR Sport, due to its market niche and low volumes."

Failure? Toyota will not seek a safety rating for the 2022 Toyota LandCruiser Series 300 GR Sport or any future GR Performance models. LandCruiser 300 Series became the first new model to pass ANCAP crash tests in 2022.

Models that fall under the GR brand are full models or variants such as the GR Yaris hot hatchback and the GR86 and GR Supra sports cars. GR Sport refers to the options with sporty styling and possibly some mechanical tweaks.

The 86 has a five-star ANCAP rating from 2012. This year it will be replaced by a new version with additional security features. The Supra does not have an ANCAP rating.

While the Yaris has a five-star rating, the GR Yaris, which features significant mechanical modifications from the regular version, is not rated. The only other GR/GR Sport model in Toyota's lineup with a five-star rating is the GR Sport version of the C-HR small SUV. Default rating since the variant was launched after a crash test.

At $137,790 before road expenses, the GR Sport is the second most expensive model class behind the Sahara ZX ($138,790).

Key mechanical differences between the GR Sport and other variants are locking front and rear differentials and a dedicated Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (e-KDSS), the only LandCruiser variant offered with this system.

This system can lock and unlock the anti-roll bars and, in combination with adaptive dampers, allows for greater wheel articulation.
