Renault battery certificate, our expert opinion

Mobilize, a new brand launched by Renault in January 2021 and dedicated to new mobility, is announcing a number of new services, including a battery certification.

What is Battery Certificate?

A battery certificate, a battery test, or even a battery diagnosis is a document meant to reassure used electric vehicle buyers.

Since the battery of an electric vehicle wears out over time and with use, it is important to check its condition before purchasing a used electric vehicle. In fact, the cost of repairing or replacing a battery can exceed 15 euros. By stating the health (or SOH) status of a battery, a battery certificate is an important means of confirming confidence between sellers and buyers and an important selling point.

What about Renault battery certificate?

Available from the MyRenault App for Individuals, and a priori Renault's free battery certificate seems to have certain advantages.

The information presented in this document is, according to the diamond manufacturer, taken from the Battery Management System (BMS), the Battery Management Unit, or "calculated outside the vehicle based on driving and charging data."

Specifically, Renault battery certificate mainly states SOH and vehicle mileage.

Renault battery certificate, our expert opinion

Renault certificate issued by Renault for Renault.

A battery certificate is an important tool when buying a used electric vehicle, and the fact that Renault is adopting one is good news for electric mobility. However, the question arises about the role of manufacturers in certifying their own batteries.

Firstly, the battery warranty, which usually lasts 8 years and 160 km, is only valid for a battery whose SOH is below a certain threshold. Since it is the manufacturer's responsibility to repair or replace the battery when the battery is under warranty, SOH diagnostics are legal as long as it is performed by an independent third party to avoid a judge and party scheme.

It will always be more reassuring for the buyer of a used electric vehicle, the majority of the cost of which, as we recall, is the battery, to obtain information on the level of residual capacity from someone who is not interested in this value should be as large as possible.

In addition, battery certifications must be comparable for different used electric vehicles, and this is for different car brands. How to compare Renault certificate with Peugeot or Opel certificate, if they exist? Here, too, the second hand market must be built around independent and homogeneous labels.

La Belle Batterie, the perfect tool for selling a used electric vehicle.

100% independent certification of La Belle Batterie battery is issued after battery diagnostics via OBDII port, which is the standard set by the manufacturers.

The La Belle Batterie certification indicates for this electric vehicle:

  1. The car has been diagnosed;
  2. Battery Condition (SOH) according to manufacturer's warranty criteria;
  3. Additional elements for better control of the battery condition;
  4. Remaining battery warranty level;
  5. The autonomy of an electric vehicle in different conditions.

Vehicle diagnosed

The La Belle Batterie certificate indicates the make, model and version of the battery of the certified vehicle, as well as its license plate, commissioning date and mileage.

Battery Condition (SOH) as per manufacturer's warranty criteria

The main information in the certificate is the state of health (SOH) of the battery. This information comes from the battery management system and is obtained by reading the OBDII. The La Belle Batterie certificate indicates the battery level according to the criteria selected by the manufacturer. It can be SOH expressed as a percentage (Renault, Nissan, Tesla, etc.) or even the maximum remaining capacity expressed in Ah (Smart, etc.).

Additional elements for better monitoring of the battery condition

The La Belle Batterie certification provides additional information about the battery when changing from one vehicle to another.

For example, Renault Zoé may have a dramatic increase in SOH following a BMS reprogramming software operation. This reprogramming frees up additional usable capacity, which increases the value of the SOH. However, reprogramming the BMS does not restore the battery: 98% SOH is not necessarily good news if the BMS has been reprogrammed one or more times. The La Belle Batterie certification indicates to Renault Zoé the number of reprogramming operations that the battery has undergone.

Battery warranty level

Battery warranties vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and it is easy for a buyer to get lost. The La Belle Batterie certification indicates the remaining level of the battery warranty. Another argument to reassure your customer!

The autonomy of an electric vehicle in different conditions.

When it comes to a used electric car, the question that comes up regularly after the question of the condition of the battery is about its actual autonomy. And since there is not one, but autonomy in an electric car, the La Belle Batterie certificate indicates the maximum distance that a given electric car can travel, in different cycles (urban, mixed and highway), in different conditions (summer / winter) and in different conditions. Of course, taking into account the state of the battery.
