At night, the driver must ensure that the rear license plate is legible. The traffic police inspector has every right to stop the car if the rear number plate light is not working.

According to the Code of Administrative Offenses 12.2, part one, for unreadable numbers, a minimum administrative fine of 500 rubles or a warning is imposed on the driver.

The backlighting of the front number does not matter, but if you decide to light it up as well, then only white or yellow lamps can be installed, otherwise you will be fined 3000 rubles, and the lighting equipment will be confiscated, or you will be prohibited from using the vehicle, and license plates signs will be removed for repeated violation (12.4 part one of the Code of Administrative Offenses).

A clear definition of “number readability” has appeared in the rules of the road - the traffic police inspector must examine it without problems from a distance of 20 meters. During daylight hours, this applies to both license plates, and at night, only the rear number.

The driver will not be penalized for the lack of illumination of the rear license plate only if the design of his vehicle does not allow the installation of lighting devices.

Of course, the visibility of the number is unlikely to affect traffic safety in any way. This is necessary primarily for traffic police inspectors to control vehicles.

If you were stopped for the first time for this reason, then you can easily “get out” by saying that, as befits an exemplary driver, you checked the backlight and readability of the license plates, cleaned them of dirt before leaving the garage and checked the operation of all lights.

In this case, the inspector will give you a verbal warning and require you to replace the backlight of the number within XNUMX hours.
