Brake noise: causes and solutions

When riding a motorcycle, your two wheels may make noise when braking.... They can be random or frequent, we will offer you solutions after examining the most common causes.

Signs of a brake problem

There are many signs of a brake problem, but we use our ears more than our eyes to detect a brake problem. You may hear a squeak (which may be continuous), dull, or squeak... If this sound only occurs when braking, follow your instincts and try to fix the problem. Please note that even after consulting a mechanic, the problem will not necessarily be solved, because it will not be visually visible.

Crash into a motorcycle

You just had a motorcycle, are the parts like new? Your motorcycle definitely needs break-in, which is often considered unnecessary or unpleasant. However, good break-in is essential for the longevity of the motorcycle and a safer ride.

During the break-in period, the parts will gradually be put in place, this is the period when you should not use the engine completely. This duration is usually set by the manufacturer, do not hesitate to contact your garage for more information. Very often this corresponds to a distance of 500 to 1000 kilometers. If you've just bought a motorcycle or just changed pads, you may hear a squeak. Some recommend making a small chamfer of lime around the entire edge of the filling. Brake noise: causes and solutions

Brake pads

Are your brake pads rubbing a lot? Is it difficult to brake? If you are sure that the problem is with the brake pads, I advise you to read.  Do you feel jerks when braking, do the brakes touch? Feel free to check if the discs or drums are in good condition, worn and clean. In case of deformation, replace the part or contact a mechanic.

If it is difficult to control the brake, it is recommended to check whether the pipe is deformed or clogged, whether the piston is jammed.

Tips : Pump the brake fluid (at least every 2 years).

No- : It is recommended to check the brakes at every oil change or every 50 km. The thickness of the lining must be more than 000 mm.

Vibration

If you feel vibrations, be sure to reduce them. There are several options available to you for this. Novice mechanics will lubricate the back of the pads, which is sometimes enough.

Otherwise, there is a more effective solution - to use an anti-whistle bomb. It is usually sold in garages, you can also find it online. It is sprayed onto the back of the plate (as suggested earlier with lubricant).

You can also degrease the discs, just poor handling (eg greasy fingers) is enough to get them dirty and not work properly.

Brake noise: causes and solutions

Icy brake pads

They usually cause a squeal in the front brakes. The surface of the pad is as smooth as ice, so braking is no longer performed properly. This could be caused by poor lapping ... To fix this, you can sand the pads with an emery board. However, remember that you have certainly shortened the life of your brake pads, be on the lookout!

Tips: Invest in quality pads! This item is vital when riding a motorcycle, especially in the mountains. This is a long term investment. On the Internet, they cost about forty euros. You can then install them yourself.

In conclusion, if you are having trouble with brake noise, the problem is definitely your brake pads. There are many reasons, and it is not easy to find it the first time. Remember that a break-in period is necessary! Regular motorcycle maintenance will also increase the life of your pads, feel free to contact the passionate mechanics or even the Motards.net community for questions!
