Symptoms of a Faulty or Faulty Fan Motor Relay

If the fan motor is not working, the car fuses are blown, or the relays are melting, you may need to replace the car fan motor relay.

The fan motor relay is an electrical switch that is used to supply power to the vehicle's fan motor. The fan motor is the component responsible for pushing air through the vents of your vehicle's heating and air conditioning systems. Without it, the air conditioning system will not be able to circulate heated or cooled air. The fan motor relay controls the current used to power the fan motor and is subject to continuous switching on and off. Over time, it can finally wear out. When the blower relay starts to fail, the car will usually show several symptoms that alert the driver to a potential problem that needs to be fixed.

1. The fan motor is not working.

One of the first symptoms of an electric fan relay problem is that the fan motor does not work at all. Because the relay is a switch that supplies current to the fan motor, if it fails internally then power from the fan motor circuit will be cut off, causing the motor to no longer run or blow air out of the vents.

2. Blown fuses

One of the first signs of a failing or failing AC fan motor relay is a blown fuse in the AC fan motor relay circuit. If any problem occurs in the fan motor relay that prevents it from being able to properly limit and distribute power, it can cause the fan motor fuse to blow. Any power surges or excessive current from a faulty relay can blow a fuse and shut down power to protect the system.

3. Melted relay

Another more serious sign of a blower relay problem is a burnt or melted relay. Relays are subject to high current loads and can sometimes get hot when problems occur. In severe cases, the relay can become so hot that the relay's internal components and plastic housing begin to melt and burn, sometimes even causing damage to the fuse box or panel.

Because the fan motor relay is essentially a switch that directly controls power to the fan motor, the entire AC system will not be able to distribute cooled or heated air if the relay fails. For this reason, if you suspect that the electric fan relay is defective, contact a professional AvtoTachki technician to diagnose the vehicle's air conditioning system. They will be able to determine if the car needs a blower motor relay replacement or other repair to get your AC system back to full functionality.
