The Skoda Superb is a comfortable luxury car with plenty of space on board. The top of the Laurin & Klem lineup has all the necessary accessories and 4X4 traction, but the price makes it compare to more well-known premium cars.

Sedans are tricky territory, full of competition and almost complete German monopoly. There Skoda Superb however, it has everything to shine, and it has nothing to envy from premium competitors. The version we tested is the pinnacle of the Laurin & Klement range – a version named after the two founders of the brand – powered by a 2.0 TDI engine with a 190 hp gearbox. auto DSG and four-wheel drive.

New Excellent it has clear and sculptural lines, which stylistically is a giant step forward compared to the previous generation. Our version's LED units and 18-inch wheels give it a truly special look, and on stage it can compete with much nobler rivals. It's not hard to find Audi details in its design, it is enough to park it next to the A4 to realize that in fact only the dress is changing.

But the Superb is a good copy of its sister from Ingolstadt, on the contrary, its discreet appearance makes it a more concrete car aimed at an audience that does not want to seem snobbish and bourgeois, but at the same time does not want to give up luxury and give preference to a high level of comfort.

city

Car tonnage (la Excellent (486 cm long and 186 cm wide) doesn't make it a true parking queen, but the various sensors and parking assist make life a lot easier.

Size is the Superb's only problem when used in the city, because otherwise it's really laid back.

With various modes (ECO, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual) that interact with the steering cone, shock absorbers, engine, gearbox and traction, Superb changes character to your liking. In ECO and Comfort modes, it is extremely relaxing: the steering is light and consistent, and the 6-speed DSG is always fast and smooth in passes, and the shock absorbers make the car float on all types of bumps and holes.

Il 2.0 TDI it is round and progressive, the torque of 400 Nm is felt; Thus, the gearbox can quickly select top gear within a few hundred meters to keep consumption to a minimum.

The seats are soft, the seat is comfortable, not as low as in the BMW 3 Series, but the “correct” driver position is easy to find and it is pleasant to hold the steering wheel.

Thanks to the suspension Dynamic chassis control, Superb changes the mood at your command.

When sport modes are selected, the steering is more stable, the engine is more responsive and the dampers are firmer. Keep in mind that it won't be a true sports car, but it does respond significantly better to driver input. The steering is somewhat "painless" and disconnected from the chassis, and the Superb's dynamism remains far from its "home rival" Passat.

Il engine 2.0 TDI is excellent, both in terms of ride and ride, and traction. 190 h.p. and 400 Nm are sufficient to provide a great shot in the first 4 gears, and the engine smoothly develops a speed of up to 4.500 rpm. The unit runs very quietly, and even when revving up, the noise is pleasant and not very annoying, which is definitely a good result for a four-cylinder diesel.

Il cambio DSG on the other hand, it always remains exemplary in terms of speed and smoothness of shifting, both in automatic and manual modes using paddles or a lever.

In addition, in ECO mode, each time you take your foot off the gas, the vehicle will neutralize and coast to maximize efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. As soon as you touch the accelerator, the engine responds instantly. We loved this feature, which not only allows you to consume less, but also makes the car (almost) as quiet as an electric one.

There is everything you need to grind kilometers: adaptive cruise control, sound system Canton with 12 speakers, including subwoofer and digital equalizer, blind spot warning, automatic emergency braking and vertical gauge reader. Aerodynamic hiss is minimal, as is tire rolling.

Thanks to all safety-oriented technologies, including the emergency braking system, there is no need for too much attention and the stress of driving is always minimal.

Life on board

With a length of almost 5 meters and a wheelbase of almost 2,90 m. Skoda Superb it is truly a living room on four wheels. The boot, which opens as a single tailgate (unusual for a hatchback), opens electrically and boasts an amazing load capacity: 650 liters - against 586 for the Passat and 480 for the A4.

The interior is clearly top quality: the leather is very soft and the dashboard is covered in soft plastic and high quality materials. The styling is slightly cooler than its German sisters, but with details like the bright green line that crosses the cabin and the quilted leather on the seats, the interior takes on a chic yet concrete look.

The passenger space is large enough, both front and rear, and the climate is also adjustable at the rear. In this version, we also find curtains for the rear windows and umbrellas inserted into the doors, just like on the Roll's Royce.

There is also no shortage of technological accessories: these are capacitive touch screen The 8-inch laptop is well integrated and the infotainment system is packed with all the connectivity you need. For a surcharge of € 1.070, you can even get a digital radio receiver and a TV tuner.

Price and costs

This is a high price, not so much in an absolute sense - the quality and equipment are excellent - but compared to competitors. From him, the Czech has a truly exceptional trunk and rich equipment, but here's the version. Laurin and Clement puts Superb in an awkward position in the market.

On the other hand, despite the all-wheel drive, the 2.0 TDI is not very thirsty in all conditions, especially thanks to the ECO mode. The Superb achieved a real average of 16 km / l during our test period.
