How long can you drive without insurance when buying a car or if it has ended?

If you bought a new car, then according to the law on compulsory civil liability insurance, you have 5 days to purchase an OSAGO policy. If after five days you have not reached the insurer or have not decided where it is better to insure the car, then you face an administrative penalty:

  • article 12.37 part 2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses - failure by the driver to fulfill his obligation to insure liability or driving a vehicle with a knowingly missing OSAGO policy - a fine of 800 rubles or the removal of state registration plates.

There are options in which you can drive without OSAGO for a longer time:

  • if you buy a used car, then a notarized power of attorney is issued, according to which you can also drive for 5 days and constantly renew it.

But in this case, there are drawbacks: firstly, you will have to constantly renew the power of attorney and pay the notary for services; secondly, in the event of an accident, all the damage caused by you will have to be paid by yourself.

All auto lawyers advise unanimously to issue an OSAGO as soon as possible, fortunately, now this is not a problem, an insurance policy is drawn up directly in the cabin. If you do not want problems at all, you can leave the car in the parking lot near the salon and call an insurance company agent who will offer you the most suitable conditions. Agents will gladly arrange everything according to the rules, since their direct income depends on it.

There are also some nuances:

  • only those cars that have passed technical inspection are insured;
  • without OSAGO, your car will not be registered with the traffic police.

People who value their time and have no time to stand in line in the corridors of the MREO prefer to entrust all these formalities to representatives of the service center or salon where the car was bought.

Thus, approach car insurance responsibly, because a fine of 800 rubles is not the worst thing that can happen to you. If you cannot register the car with the traffic police at the set time, then you will be stopped at the first post, the car will be sent to the parking lot, and you may be detained until the circumstances are clarified.
