Oils for manual transmission

The most common mechanical transmission oils are SAE EP75W80 or EP80W90. It's a bullshit? Don't panic, it's actually very simple! This code informs you about the characteristics of the oil:

- SAE, Society of Automotive Engineers: This is the American standard for classifying oils by their viscosity.

– EP, Extreme Pressure: These two letters represent the resistance of the oil to the rotation of the gears.

– 75: The number before W (Winter) indicates the cold viscosity of the oil.

– 80: The number after W indicates the viscosity of the hot oil.

This oil is inexpensive: count from 6 to 8 euros per liter, knowing that it takes 2 to 3,5 liters to replace a gearbox. The calculation is simple: count from 18 to 28 euros of oil for a gearbox change.

Automatic transmission oils

When it comes to automatic transmissions, they need a special oil: it must be very liquid when cold and contain many additives that counteract oxidation or pressure.

This oil is called ATF Drexon, it is a red color oil created by General Motors and constantly updated, often indicated by numbers (Drexon I, II, III, IV, V or VI).
