Smart ForTwo Coupe 52 кВт Best before

Smart ForTwo has grown significantly in its updated look and become more comfortable for everyday use. It was stretched 19 centimeters in length, 5 millimeters in width and 43 millimeters in wheelbase.

Thus, there is more room for legs and shoulders inside (the passenger seat is shifted 15 centimeters back from the driver's so that the shoulders of passengers are not aligned), the dashboard is now completely flat (American rules), there is more room for luggage by 50 percent. With 220 liters, you won't run over a friend, but you can buy groceries for the whole family in the store. Checked!

Rarely are cars that allow ice to be washed off the windshield directly from the front and reversing by simply reaching over the wall and pulling out on it, or pulling out the center console at will. Smart ForTwo remains special even in the new version. Even though it has grown and thus gained some usability (more space inside, more trunk, more comfort), the question is whether this is the right direction, since the small size is its biggest advantage. You know when you can park in a longitudinal car park directly opposite and make fun of others who are struggling with side car parking.

Well, in our experience in crowded Ljubljana, ForTwo did not lose this advantage as we always had a scooter-sized corner where we pushed it. It has gained new advantages, in particular on the main road and on the highways. While its predecessor has hardly chased the highway speed limit, the novelty is much more sovereign and doesn't need to be pushed to the extreme. The three-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, which makes about 52 kilowatts (there are also 45 and 62 kilowatt engines), is loud, but at the same time modest in consumption.

The average in the test was 6 liters, but with a more relaxed ride, just under six liters could easily be picked up, which is more than satisfactory result these days at dizzying gas prices. Well, not only to highlight the positive qualities, but also to mention those that got on our nerves. Let's say a robotic five-speed gearbox that can easily be mistaken for a good automatic sister.

The Smart boasts that it is 50 percent faster when overtaking than its predecessor, but it still takes a long time to separate from it, while providing passengers with a pitching motion every time. In the editorial office, we called it a nod, as robotic gearboxes are often called.

You can limit this oscillation by releasing the accelerator pedal before shifting (sequentially using the gear lever or fully automatically), but this is already a habit of the driver to use the technique less pleasantly, right? Well, braking with the brake pedal is also annoying, because you have to press on it with your whole foot, as if you were driving the largest truck, and, first of all, we were confused by the Micro Hybrid Drive inscription. Hybrid? Ah, what a hybrid, Smart ForTwo only has a system that turns the engine off at a red light to save some fuel and, above all, reduce pollution.

The system basically works great: the driver stops and the little Smartek automatically turns off if the driver presses the brake pedal. When the brake is released, the engine immediately wakes up and already allows you to be the first at the next intersection. Thanks to this system, which can be deactivated using a button next to the gear lever (then the ECO indicator on the instrument panel does not light up), it is annoying when the engine is turned off too early, for example, when the car is still "creeping". Then you won't have trouble stopping as the brakes aren't servo, but it confuses you if you're slowly creeping over the "you have no advantage" sign and then when you have a clear path you'll want to hit the gas .

So when the engine stalls, it suddenly restarts, but it still takes so long that it worried us. In the case of BMW, an engine with a similar system is switched off later and there is no need to press the brake pedal. We do not know why Smartk needs it, which does not fit into the intersection because of the gearbox, even when the gear is engaged (no gas).

Don't even look at Smart ForTwo as a hybrid car or a serious car. Despite the changes, this is still a very interesting toy for adults, and cities are still his favorite training ground. However, the MHD lettering is more appropriate for the name than for any serious hybrid technology. But we have no doubt that this one will come on time!

  • Despite the fact that it has grown in an updated form, Smart still has no competitors. Not in appearance, not in urban usability, not to mention driving pleasure. But it has more flaws than you could afford for that kind of money.
