2022 SsangYong Musso for a power boost! More powerful diesel engine coming to Korean rival Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton: report

The Musso (pictured) recently received a facelift but lacked its Rexton brother's upgraded diesel engine - until now.

SsangYong's recently refreshed Musso will receive an overdue engine upgrade as part of a refresh due next year, according to a new report.

Leaked internal document published Autospy suggests that Musso will soon get a more powerful version of its 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, with peak power up from 133kW to 148kW and peak torque jumping from 400/420Nm to 441Nm.

Sister Rexton large SUV was reported to have received the same engine upgrade with its own recent facelift, but Musso missed out around the same time for unknown reasons.

Apparently, SsangYong is ready to rebalance its body-on-frame lineup, but it remains to be seen if Musso will get Rexton's new eight-speed torque converter automatic as it may continue to stick with its current six-speed unit.

But the leak suggests that Musso is in line for other upgrades, including the introduction of speed-sensing electric power steering, which for the first time will allow the installation of a lane keeping system and steering assist.

Other new advanced driver assistance systems will include Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Safe Distance Alert (SDA), which informs the driver of the time gap between their vehicle and the vehicle ahead to maintain a safe stopping distance.

Additional Musso equipment will also expand to the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, heated rear seats and redesigned overhead console already found in the Rexton.

Stay tuned for the official announcement of the facelifted Musso, due to hit Australian showrooms in the near future. For reference, the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max, and competitor Mitsubishi Triton are currently on sale for $34,990 to $47,790.
