On the VAZ 2107, only 8-valve power units were installed on a regular basis. However, the owners of the "sevens" often independently made a replacement for more powerful 16-valve engines. How to do it right and does the end justify the means?

In fact, structurally and technically, 8 and 16 valve motors differ very seriously. Mainly, there are differences in the cylinder head (cylinder head), because it is there that the car's camshafts are fixed.

Eight valve engine

The motor of this design has only one camshaft. Such an installation is optimal for the VAZ 2107, since it controls the air-fuel injection system in a well-functioning mode and removes unnecessary exhaust.

The eight-valve motor is implemented as follows. In the cylinder head in each cylinder there are two valve devices: the first works for the injection of the mixture, the second for the exhaust gases. The opening of each of these valves in each cylinder produces exactly the camshaft. The roller consists of several metal elements and during rotation presses on the valves.

Sixteen valve engine

Such motors are typical for more modern versions of the VAZ - for example, for Priora or Kalina. The design of the 16-valve power unit is more complicated than that of the 8-valve due to the presence of two camshafts, divorced in different directions. Accordingly, the number of valves on the cylinders doubles.

Thanks to this arrangement, each cylinder has two valves for injection and two valves for exhaust gases. This gives the car more power and reduced noise during combustion of the air-fuel mixture.

All the advantages of a 16-valve engine for the VAZ 2107

Installing a more powerful 16-valve engine on the "seven" provides the following advantages:

  1. Increasing the power of the power unit both in normal driving modes and during acceleration and overtaking.
  2. Reducing noise effects when driving (this is achieved by installing a rubber timing chain belt together).
  3. Reliability of operation - more modern motors have an increased resource and a more thoughtful design.
  4. Environmental friendliness of emissions (two lambda probes are installed in the catalyst).

Installation disadvantages

However, with all the advantages of replacing an 8-valve engine with a 16-valve one, the disadvantages should also be highlighted. Traditionally, drivers talk about three disadvantages of such an installation:

  1. The need to transform several vehicle systems: brakes, electrical equipment, ignition, clutch.
  2. The high cost of the new 16-valve engine.
  3. Alteration of fasteners for the needs of the new motor.

Thus, installing a 16-valve engine on a VAZ 2107 is not considered a simple procedure. It will take not only experience and special knowledge, but also the proper organization of the entire work process, in which the choice of a suitable power unit is not the last thing.

What engines can be put on the VAZ "classic"

VAZ 2107, of course, is considered a classic of the domestic automotive industry. Therefore, the same rules “work” for this model as for the entire “classic” line of AvtoVAZ.

The best options for the "seven" can be considered two motors:

These 16-valve engines have almost identical mounts, requiring very little modification for installation. In addition (which is also important), the current gearbox from the VAZ 2107 is quite suitable for these motors, thereby the driver will save time on installing the gearbox.

And the purchase of such an engine is already expedient, which will significantly save the existing budget. However, a used motor should be bought from friends or from a seller who can give a guarantee on their product.

How to install a 16-valve engine on a VAZ 2107

To begin with, you should prepare well for the procedure:

Work process

If a motor from a VAZ 2112 or Lada Priora is installed, then it will not be necessary to change the clutch basket, since the new engine will feel quite comfortable with the old clutch.

After completing all the preparatory work, the actual installation of the 16-valve engine on the "seven" follows:

  1. In the engine compartment, install engine mounts from the Niva.

  2. Put 2 thick washers on the pillows to level the motor. It is possible that on the "seven" it will be necessary to increase the number of washers, so you need to initially measure the height of the new motor and all attachments.
  3. Fasten the “native” gearbox with three bolts. The uppermost left bolt will not fit into the box hole due to the washers being installed. However, the gearbox will be perfectly fixed on three mounts.
  4. Place the starter in place.

  5. Mount the outlet manifold with two lambda probes by analogy with the installation of the "native" manifold from the VAZ 2107.
  6. Pull the clutch cable and secure it to the throttle actuator.
  7. Install "native" pump, generator and other attachments - no alterations are required.

    It is important not to make a mistake with the connectors and hoses, otherwise the engine may be damaged when starting.

Necessary improvements

However, the installation of a 16-valve engine does not end there. A number of works will be required to improve the entire system. And it's best to start with the electrics.

Alteration of electricians

For high-quality operation of the new power unit, you will have to replace the gasoline pump. You can take this mechanism both from the "Priora" and from the "twelfth", or you can save money and buy a pump from the injector model of the "seven". The fuel pump is connected according to the usual algorithm and does not require any alterations.

On the VAZ 2107, the motor is connected with just three wires. The new engine needs a qualitatively different connection. First of all, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Install the engine control unit (for example, from the VAZ 2112 model).
  2. Connect all the sensors included in the kit to it - the wires should be pulled along the same places where they are stretched on the VAZ 2107 (in some cases, you will need to extend the standard wiring).

  3. To connect the "check" on the dashboard, install an LED and connect a wire from the control unit to it.
  4. Program the ECU (it is advisable to do this on the basis of a car repair shop if there is no experience in setting up electronic equipment).

It is recommended to carry out all connections and neoplasms on the VAZ 2107 in the same way as it is done on the VAZ 2107 with an injection engine.

Brake system

The new motor has higher power characteristics, which means that the car will pick up speed faster and brake slower. In this regard, it is recommended to refine the braking system on the VAZ 2107. To do this, it is enough to change the main cylinder to a more powerful one, and also, if necessary, replace all cylinders if they are very worn out.

Cooling system

As a rule, the available potential of the standard cooling system on the "seven" is enough to cool the new powerful engine in a timely manner. However, if the motor lacks cooling, a slight alteration will be required: pour into the expansionиThe body tank is not antifreeze, but a better antifreeze.

Thus, installing a 16-valve engine on a VAZ 2107 is a complicated procedure, as it requires not only significant physical effort, but also thoughtfulness of actions. The main difficulty of this operation is to connect the wiring and refine the system.
