Should you upgrade to CCS in the new Tesla Model S? Our reader: It's worth it! [update] • CARS

Another reader decided to update Tesla Model S to support CCS plug chargers using a Type 2 / CCS adapter. This time we are dealing with a relatively new version of the car, released in June 2018 and received in Tilburg (Netherlands).

So far, our Reader has used blowers via type 2 connector. Largest charging powerhe noticed it 115-116 kWwhich is roughly equal to the number of Tesla charging stations offered before the era of software updates.

About two weeks ago, he switched to CCS: the cable distributor (under the seat) was replaced at a Tesla service center in Warsaw, and the software was updated to allow his car to work with CCS plug chargers. He also got a Type 2 / CCS adapter that looks something like this:

He was surprised when he connected to the Supercharger using a Type 2 / CCS adapter. It turned out that the car accelerated to 137 kW - and 135 kW are captured in the photo. This is about 16 percent more than before (115-116 kW), which means shorter charging times. So far, it has covered a range at a speed of less than +600 km / h, after the update it reached +700 km / h:

Another reader of ours claims that this is a coincidence. The blowers were upgraded to 150 kW at the turn of August and September 2019. There have been many new versions of the software lately, including the famous v10, which our previous reader probably got as one of the first people in Poland:

This is the latest firmware (2019.32.12.3) in cars that allows you to accelerate to power above 120 kW even in older versions of cars - this is the Tesla Model S 85D:

Summary: Type 2 / CCS adapter – worth it or not?

Answer: if we use Only with superchargers and semi-fast charging via Type 2 port, not worth updating Tesla Model S / X for CCS support. Because we will achieve the same speeds through the type 2 connector.

but if we use different charging stationsthen upgrading the machine makes a lot of sense. Through a type 2 socket we will not charge with a power higher than 22 kW (in newer Tesla: ~ 16 kW), before the Chademo adapter we will reach up to 50 kW, while the Type 2 / CCS adapter allows us to accelerate to 50 ... 100 ... 130 + kW depending on the capabilities of the charger.

> KNOW. Is an! GreenWay Polska charging station available up to 150 kW

Despite the fact that Chargers in Poland with a capacity of more than 50 kW can be counted on the fingers of both hands.but their number will only grow. With each passing month, buying a CCS adapter can make more sense when you consider the time spent stopping. Of course, under the aforementioned condition, we are using more than just Tesla superchargers.
