Should you buy a Nissan ProPilot? The driver doubts the appropriateness of the investment

The owner of the Nissan Leaf (2018) in the Tekna version and our reader, Mr. Konrad, from time to time share their driving experience with ProPilot, i.e. the driver assistance system. In his opinion, the system can be useful, but sometimes it causes unexpected situations. This calls into question the rationale behind investing in ProPilot when buying a car.

    • What is ProPilot and how does it work?

The situation described by the driver involves driving in the sun - which most driver assistance systems don't like - with a streak of tar running through the center of the streak (probably). It sparkled in the sun, which caused the car to constantly worry about leaving the lane: I'm not 100 percent sure, but when I was driving in my lane after these lines appeared, the car began to signal that I was leaving the lane.

One of the Internet users signed it: I confirm. We also drive a Leaf and on the same road (like this one) the alarm beeps every 20 meters. The car owner concluded: (...) if you want your eyes to be in front of you all the time, and you cannot take your hands off the steering wheel for a moment, because something like this will happen, then what is the point of these systems? [emphasized by the editors www.elektrowoz.pl, source]

In our opinion, the diagnosis was correct: the ProPilot system requires good, defined conditions on very specific surfaces. Any reflective lines and road debris that are difficult to predict can lead to unexpected alarms or even dangerous road situations.

Thus, the additional surcharge is meaningless if the system designed to relieve the driver requires constant attention from him. If we also take into account that, on average, more than 1/3 of the days are rainy in Poland, it may turn out that ProPilot will help us mainly on the motorway in good weather, that is, when the driver should get involved in something so as not to fall asleep from fatigue.

It is well known that it is because of driver anxiety that modern highways and expressways tend to be undulating and winding rather than running straight like an arrow.

What is ProPilot and how does it work?

The Nissan ProPilot system in Leaf is only available in the Tekna version, which today costs PLN 171,9 thousand. There is no cheaper version of N-Connect for 165,2 thousand PLN. The cost of ProPilot in the manufacturer's price list is 1,9 thousand PLN.

According to Nissan's description, ProPilot is a "revolutionary autonomous driving technology" designed for single-lane highway driving. The system uses a single camera and can control the vehicle's direction and speed based on the behavior of the vehicle in front.
