Insurance requirements for car registration in Indiana

To legally drive a vehicle in Indiana, you must renew your vehicle registration with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles each year. To do this, you must provide proof that you have the required liability insurance.

The minimum liability insurance required for vehicle owners under Indiana law is as follows:

  • $10,000 in property damage liability, which covers damage your vehicle causes to someone else's property (such as buildings or road signs).

  • $25,000 for personal injury insurance per person; this means that the total minimum amount that a driver must have for bodily injury insurance is $US 50,000 XNUMX to cover the smallest possible number of people involved in an accident (two drivers).

This means the total required liability insurance is $60,000 for Indiana drivers.

Indiana law also requires insurance for uninsured and underinsured motorists, which covers costs in the event of an accident involving a driver who did not have the proper amount of coverage required by law. The minimum amounts for each type are as follows:

  • Uninsured motorist insurance must be equal to the minimum requirement for general liability insurance in Indiana ($60,000).

  • Underinsured motorist insurance must be $50,000.

Other types of insurance

Although these types of liability insurance are the only mandatory types, Indiana recognizes other types of insurance for additional coverage. This includes:

  • Medical benefit coverage that covers the cost of medical treatment or funerals resulting from a traffic accident.

  • Comprehensive insurance that covers damage to your vehicle that was not the result of an accident (for example, damage caused by the weather).

  • Collision insurance, which covers the cost of damage to your vehicle that is a direct result of a car accident.

  • A rental refund that pays for the use of a rental car while your car is being repaired after an accident.

  • Gap coverage, which covers remaining rental or car loan payments if the total value of the car was less than the amount still owed.

  • Custom Parts and Equipment coverage, which covers the cost of replacing non-standard upgrades on a vehicle damaged in an accident.

Certificate of conformity

In Indiana, insurance companies are required to report to the state BMV if a driver is issued a ticket or has an accident. This certificate is used as proof of insurance to show the government that the driver is meeting the statutory insurance minimum. In the event that this certificate is not filed within 40 days from the date, BMV will submit a request and you may face suspension of your driver's license.

Penalties for Violation

Driving without insurance in Indiana can result in the loss of your driver's license for up to a full year.

If you are found guilty of reckless driving, such as drunk driving, you may also be required to provide an SR-22 Financial Liability Document that certifies that you have the required liability insurance from an authorized insurance company.
