Insurance requirements for registering a car in Oklahoma

All drivers in the state of Oklahoma are required to have auto liability insurance or "financial liability" for their vehicles in order to drive legally and maintain vehicle registration.

The minimum financial liability requirements for Oklahoma drivers are as follows:

  • Minimum $25,000 per person for personal injury or death. This means you need to have at least $50,000 with you to cover the fewest possible number of people involved in an accident (two drivers).

  • $25,000 minimum for property damage liability

This means that the total minimum amount of financial liability you will require is $75,000 to cover bodily injury or death, as well as liability for property damage.

In addition, all insurance companies are required to offer coverage for uninsured motorists in their minimum insurance policies. However, Oklahoma residents can opt out of this coverage.

Oklahoma Auto Insurance Plan

All authorized insurance companies in Oklahoma have the right to deny coverage to drivers who are deemed "high-risk". This means that the driver has been in several car accidents over a period of time, or that he has been convicted of many traffic violations in the past.

To ensure that all drivers have proper liability insurance, Oklahoma has an Oklahoma Motor Insurance Plan that allows any driver to apply for insurance through participating insurance companies.

proof of insurance

To register your vehicle with the Oklahoma Department of Motor Vehicles, you must show proof of insurance. You must also have an insurance document in your car because you are required to show it during a traffic stop or at the scene of an accident.

Acceptable forms for proof of insurance must include the following information:

  • Name and address of the insurance company

  • Numbers of the National Association of insurance commissioners of the insurance company

  • Your name

  • Year, make, model and identification number of your vehicle

  • Validity and expiry dates of the insurance policy

  • A warning that you must both hand in a copy at check-in and keep a copy in your vehicle at all times.

  • This statement should be exactly as written: “Look carefully at the policy exceptions. This form is not part of your insurance policy."

In addition, Oklahoma has an insurance verification system that tracks the insurance status of all registered vehicles. All insurance providers are required to report changes to your insurance policy through this electronic monitoring system so that your insurance can be checked at any time.

Penalties for Violation

If you are not financially responsible in Oklahoma, fail to provide proof of insurance when required, or your insurance cannot be verified electronically, you may face several penalties. This includes:

  • Suspension of your driving license

  • Suspension of your vehicle registration

  • Fine up to $250.

  • Sentence 30 days in jail
