Supertest Toyota Yaris 1.3 VVT-i Luna - 100.000 km.
Test Drive

Supertest Toyota Yaris 1.3 VVT-i Luna - 100.000 km.

But first, let's refresh our memory a little. Toyota first unveiled its small city car in the fall of 1998 with a 1-liter, 3-valve, 87 hp engine, and a year later in Paris. It was this Yaris that you see in the photo that went to our supertest in the spring of 2002. The price of the test car at that time was 2.810.708 432.000 XNUMX tolar, and our Yaris was more expensive than the base model by XNUMX XNUMX tolar.

Since we like to drive in comfort, we thought about power windows, air conditioning and a radio with CD changer, in short, everything related to the basic equipment of such a car. So that access to the rear seat was not too difficult, the rear side door came in handy. Our Yaris was something that many small city car users are sure to want.

We have traveled almost all over Europe with him. Although some users of this car were a little skeptical before long-distance travel in the sense: “Is it really suitable for such a long trip (to Paris, to Sicily, to Spain)? Will it last? Will it be comfortable enough? “In the end, it turned out that they had taken the risk unfairly.

Now, when we leaf through the control book, where we recorded all the observations and opinions, the scores after each, even the longest, were very good. “I am surprised by the engine, which is nervous and consumes little, as well as the flexible interior,” comments often write.

So it really is. Namely, the Yaris is one of the lower class cars that has the strongest presence in Slovenia (its competitors are Clio, Corsa, Punto, C3 and the rest of the company), and its centimeters are put to good use. This can be seen already from the outside: the wheels are shifted to the extreme points of the body and have a total length of 3.615 mm, which, of course, is one of the main advantages of the Yaris in urban traffic jams and the eternal lack of free space. parking places.

We have repeatedly emphasized that he is flexible and manageable, and rightly so, that we are doing it again. We were impressed by the precise steering wheel (which is even a bit sporty with a three-spoke steering wheel) and the chassis, which was comfortable enough but not too soft to drive through a series of fast corners.

Vinko Kerntz once wrote in the Second Opinion section: “Given the agility and dependable handling of a toddler, the Yaris is fun to drive, I enjoy crocheting both in and out of town and I would ride with it calmly and without resentment. to Munich."

At long distances, our risk really paid off. Last summer, the trail took us straight to Zaragoza in the middle of the Spanish desert. We drove back and forth without any problems and surprisingly fresh. We drove 2.000 kilometers from Slovenia in its entirety, through Italy, France and, of course, Spain, and then back.

With all your luggage in a week! Despite the 1-liter engine, the Yaris showed good cruising speed and moderate gas mileage of eight liters per hundred kilometers (considering the car's load of passengers, luggage and rather heavy pressing on the accelerator pedal).

You can also praise the spaciousness, despite the fact that it is small on the outside. The seats were comfortable and wide enough, and there was ample elbow room both at the door and in the middle. The front end of the Yaris sits truly regal, even our giant Peter Humar, who is unforgiving about cars when he hits his head on the roof, didn't complain.

He found enough room for his head and knees. So if you're looking for a small car for big drivers, keep that in mind. Everyone in it sat well in the front - from large to small, everyone could adjust the seat and steering wheel in their own way.

But on the back bench, things are a little different. At the bottom, it has rails that can be pushed forward and thereby increase the trunk to 305 liters, which will be appreciated by anyone who travels far away and needs more space. but if that's not enough, the Yaris lets you switch the rear bench and the luggage compartment increases from a base 205 liters to a decent 950 liters.

Of course, with the bench pushed forward, there is not much legroom for passengers who will be much more cramped in the back than in the front. Even when we pushed the bench all the way back.

Initially gray and barren (too hard, cheap ...) plastic on the dashboard and trim has become more familiar to us over the past two years. Criticism gave way to praise. The plastic is the same today as it was when the Yaris only drove a thousand miles, only the smell of the new car disappeared and a small, barely noticeable scratch appeared. And this is because of our awkwardness. This, of course, matters.

The car has indeed retained its original appearance to such an extent that, after more thorough cleaning, even such an expert who evaluates used cars will surely be fooled and sold to him the Yaris as a two-year car with 30.000 km mileage.

Even for the reason that such plastics and quality products are very practical to clean. You wipe the dust with a damp cloth and the car is like new! The Japanese already knew why such plastic was installed in the Yaris. Nowhere has it cracked or faded, which once again testifies to the quality of the interior materials.

There is another feature in the interior that was especially appreciated by women throughout the entire period of trials. We are talking about drawers, drawers, pockets and shelves where we put small items, and women usually have at least once more than men.

Some were less enthusiastic about sensors. They are digital and installed in the center of the dashboard so that only the driver can see them. We lost sight of the fact that a good trip computer will show us how many miles we can still go with the current amount of fuel. Instead, the last line on the fuel gauge scale turned on only slightly imperceptibly when the reserve was activated.

Otherwise, luck was not always intended for Yaris. We slipped on his bumpers several times, and just before the end of the supertest, someone was very jealous of him, because the key marks were waiting for us on it. When the distance to Ravbarkomandu was only 38.379 kilometers (in May last year), a hailstorm hit Ravbarkomandu like a nut in the afternoon.

There was no damage to the varnish, it was only slightly worn out, which the craftsmen quickly repaired, leaving only three barely noticeable dents. At 76.000 km, we hit it hard on the side of the road (an accident is also a part of life, which means that our supertest is vital), but it was repaired at the service station so that it still works. As a result, there was no rust or annoying shaking, rattling in the joints and the like.

Overall, the Yaris made a very good impression, as all the important little things were obviously taken into account in its design, which ultimately means that the user of the car does not have any unpleasant repairs other than regular maintenance. We did not find anything controversial in it, no chronic defects, no diseases.

Not long before we took it apart with Toyota mechanics, we took it one last time to the gauge bench at RSR Motorsport, where a measurement (87bhp @ 2rpm) showed the engine to be fully functional even at 6.073 kilometers. Then we went with him for a comprehensive inspection.

Exhaust gas measurements have shown excellent results, which indicates good combustion and remains an effective catalyst. Inspection of the undercarriage assemblies showed excellent condition, no gaps or traces of excessive wear were found. It's the same with the bottom of the car. No signs of corrosion, except for a few on the exhaust system. There was no weather or anything similar to indicate the imminent need for replacement.

Only the rear shock test showed a slight deviation from the ideal value. While the front pair (left and right shock absorbers) performed almost the same, the efficiency of the rear right was somewhat weakened. In any case, the work of the last pair of shock absorbers remained within the established norms.

The brakes are also excellent. The difference in braking efficiency on the front axle was 10%, on the parking brake - 6%, and on the rear - only 1%. Thus, the overall efficiency of the brakes was 90%. Thus, we also carried out the technical inspection without problems and comments.

Our small risk turned out to be so excellent, with a clear A! The technology has worked flawlessly, validating the reputation Toyota has built for its users. Thus, measuring by eye, we dare to assert that the car will again be able to run so many kilometers without any problems. Yaris could hardly have asked for better recognition. Well, he deserved it too!

Power measurement

Engine power measurements were made by RSR Motorsport (www.rsrmotorsport.com). We found that after 100.000 kilometers the engine is still running at full power. We measured 64 kW or 1 hp. at 87 rpm. In fact, this is even a little more than what is indicated at the factory for a new machine. Factory data - 2 kW or 6.073 hp. at 63 rpm.

From the eye to the digital micrometer

Yaris behaved tired all the time, but only because we didn't wash him often; the silver color is quite sensitive to dirt. The mechanics, in fact, all the mechanical parts subject to wear were great.

The days of changing the camshaft timing chain every 45 kilometers on the Yugas (15.000) are clearly over, and with a microscope like this it also becomes clear where Toyota has such reliability around the world. If the engine components of our super-test Toyota were wiped and washed, they could be safely sold to us for new ones. ... or at least for the underutilized. Certainly not over 100.000 miles.

We evaluated some of the mechanics with the naked eye: the clutch disc showed signs of normal or even wear, without burnt parts, and its thickness was enough for half of our supertest mileage quota. It is exactly the same with the brakes: no excessive wear, no cracks, no signs of overheating. Even the thickness of the coils remained deep within acceptable limits.

In fact, we were even more interested in the engine. The fact that it hasn't dropped a drop of oil in its 100.000 miles is not yet a sign of safety, but just a good seal. What's under the aluminum? We knocked it down from above to look for signs of wear on the steering gear. We found the camshafts without cracks, only traces of the cams were visible, which, according to Toyota, is normal. The chain is not stretched, the chain tensioners are in excellent condition.

Valves maybe? Combustion processes, including large temperature differences, left a mark. But the valves travel just over half the clearance distance, which in plastic form would mean another 75.000 kilometers, and no special maintenance has yet been required, although some dirt has accumulated on them.

The last life wear option is cylinders and pistons: wear and ovality. The factory allows for ovality up to one tenth of a millimeter, and we measured 4 hundredths at the top and 3 hundredths at the bottom. So not even half.

Cylinder diameter: factory size 75 millimeters, the maximum tolerance is 13 thousandths more than this size, and in the engine of our Yaris the cylinders are 3 thousandths larger than the base size. In local language: the engine is not new, but it is somewhere in the first third of its life cycle through the eyes of an operator.

This review comforted the tech in the shower. We didn’t always treat mechanics as good craftsmen, but Yaris still didn’t retaliate with excessive wear and tear or unforeseen injuries. So I'm not surprised they sold this Yaris to a well-known buyer before we wrote this article in the newsroom.

Second opinion

At the beginning of the supertest, I traveled to Sicily with Yaris. I slid the movable back bench right into the front seats, stuffed my tent, sleeping bags and travel bags into the trunk, rolled up the air conditioner all the way, and enjoyed the Italian highway ride for two days. Ease of use, sharp 1-liter engine, modest consumption and maneuverability immediately touched my heart. In the end, my girlfriend and I appreciated him: despite his modest size, he got an A at school!

I enjoyed the baby for only three days, but during that time I traveled 2780 miles with a friend. It is quite comfortable here for two (plus children by the age of five), cheerful and not too greedy. I recommend it for city and suburban driving, so as a second car if you can afford two. Also worthy of praise are the automatic air conditioning and the five-disc automatic feeder, which is built right into the dashboard under the radio. No, there is nothing to criticize.

It's been quite a while since I last sat in Yaris, which is perhaps best for an unforgettable experience. I would say a small enough car. Outwardly, a ladybug, but when you get into it and drive a few kilometers, you forget that the "piece" is barely more than three and a half meters in length, and our powerful test Toyota utilitaria is quite enough to carry it on long trips. , not just in the city.

In this case, only a larger fuel tank is desirable. After all, all the important Slovenian pumps and the approximate distances between them are known by heart, but between Vinkovci and Belgrade they are not the best, and therefore a careless person can "get rid" of the problem.

Tomaž Crane

After more than a fifth of its 100.000 miles, the Yaris just crawled under my skin. Small, agile vehicle, ideal for city driving as well as long journeys. Despite the looks, it offers much more luggage space than you might imagine. Checked.

At first, this is a slightly unusual impression due to the shape of the sensors, which turned out to be very useful, since the passenger does not see the speed and, thus, does not "irritate" the driver unnecessarily ... Due to allegedly overspeeding ...

Matevž Koroshec

Even with the appearance of little Yaris in our supertest fleet, I was only interested in whether he really would last all 100.000 kilometers. Our supertest kilometers are not comparable to the kilometers of a regular user, although we are talking about Toyota. Already in the first months it became clear that his task would be even more difficult.

Due to its small size, which is dictated by its ease of use in urban environments, we did not take long trips with it very often, although I must admit that the few trips abroad that I took with it were very enjoyable. That said, the Yaris were mostly in the business of being a damn useful city car.

It also puts additional stress on some of the other components in the engine, especially the starter, brakes, clutch, and last but not least, the transmission. But at the end of the supertest, when I got into it for the last time and went to take measurements, everything worked perfectly flawlessly. The starter did its job, the clutch showed no wear and the transmission continued to make its distinctive "klonk klonk" sound when shifting gears. Exactly like on the first day.

Light legs around. A cute, beautifully shaped toddler, perfect for weekend getaways or a quick 'surf' around the city. The spacious interior surprises with external dimensions. An irregular engine, exceptionally good handling and a comfortable road position, and a rich array of accessories are reasons why you can easily fall in love with the Yaris from the first ride.

Peter Humar

The little Yaris has lived up to the reputation Toyota has built its strategy on over the past few years. I am, of course, talking about reliability, which did not let the kid down for all 100.000 20 miles. The fact that it is almost XNUMX centimeters shorter than the competition does not bother me too much, as the small appearance outweighs the good flexibility and usability in the interior. Toyota, put your head down.

Dusan Lukic

I confess, I myself doubted that such a small and rather cheap car could easily drive a hundred thousand miles. Not because I doubt his mechanics, but rather because he has accumulated most of the miles around the city in the hands of different drivers. In addition, it would be quite logical if crickets appeared in plastic to disable some little thing, such as a doorknob or a switch. And I waited and waited and waited and waited. ...

I wonder how few problems a man can have with a car. As a former owner of a car of the same class, I am used to more service visits and, above all, to better know the flights and kilometers of the car. Yaris, however, was in almost the same condition at the end of the supertest as we took it.

A good car wash (including interior dry cleaning, a little plastic recovery spray, and some similar tricks) is likely to turn a super-tested Yaris into a virtually new car. Added to all the fun it offered to the city crowd with its small exterior dimensions, agility and lively engine, I'm sorry he had to say goodbye.

Small on the outside, big on the inside. at Yaris it feels like you are sitting in a cool car larger than this one really is. The exception is the trunk, which is definitely not designed for family travel. The engine also deserves all praise: it consumes little, accelerates solidly, and at high revs it does not shake like a mower. Yes, it's worth it!
