Technical description Fiat Punto II

A successful continuation of the predecessor. The car gained new shapes, the appearance of the front and rear lamps was changed, a number of changes were introduced. The car became more modern, the use of lenticular headlights covered with a transparent cover instead of standard diffusing glasses significantly improved the appearance and adapted the car to the prevailing fashion.

TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

As for the technical assessment of the car, it can be safely said that the car is not very reliable in terms of typical faults. However, the overall effect is marred by poor attention to detail, and corrosion efflorescence is not uncommon (Photo 2). You may also have doubts about the quality of the materials used in production, in particular the materials used to connect the elements, the heads of the screws corrode and spoil the appearance of the car (Photos 3, 4).

TYPICAL FAULTS

Steering system

The weak point, as in the previous version, is the internal ball tip, backlashes occur quite often here, sometimes even after short runs. In addition, the steering wheel is subject to chafing (Photo 5).

Transmission

Quite often, leaks from the box occur at the joints of the elements and around the axle shaft seals. Gear shift mechanisms are sometimes damaged.

Clutch

Occasionally there is a fault consisting in unsealing of the actuator or the clutch control pump. Apart from the normal wear of the clutch disc, no major problems with the clutch are noted.

ENGINE

The motors in the glasses are mechanically worked out quite well, but there may be problems with the seals. Leaks from various parts of the engine are the norm with a run of more than 50 6,7,8,9 km (Fig. 10). Usually the oil sump is subject to corrosion, in extreme cases it even leads to complete corrosion and sudden oil leakage from the sump. The throttle valve is very often contaminated, which in extreme cases leads to its jamming (Photo).

Hamulce

The problem is corrosion of the rear brake components (brake pad springs, handbrake cable) and metal brake hoses.

Body

The big minus of Punta is low quality, starting with plastic decorative elements and ending with the body. In the attached illustrations, we see a car with a mileage of 89 11 kilometers (Fig. 12, 2,).

Electrical installation

Often there are cracks in the generator case, (Photo 13) problems with the insulation of connections from moisture. Sometimes the combined switches under the steering wheel and the window lowering regulator (switches) are damaged.

Suspension

The suspension is prone to damage, rocker fingers and metal-rubber bushings stick out, elements of the stabilizer bar (Photo 14). Shock absorbers are often damaged (Photo 15).

interior

Quite functional and pleasant interior has not avoided shortcomings. Traces of moisture appear quite often near the room lamp under the ceiling (Photo 16). Seat upholstery protrudes from the seat frame (Photo 17). Quite often, the internal mechanism of the front wipers is damaged, the elements are frayed and corroded, which causes them to disconnect from each other (Fig. 18, 19).

SUMMARY

A car that is unlikely to break down, poor quality paintwork, and inattention to finishes can be annoying. Oil leaks and small but annoying faults like the windshield wiper mechanism or protruding parts of the seat. On the other hand, parts prices and availability are a factor in Punta's favor.
