Technical description Skoda Felicia

The successor to the popular Skoda Favorit, compared to its predecessor, has changed almost completely, only the body shape was similar, but more rounded and modernized, which significantly improved the exterior.

TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

The car is well made in terms of mechanics. The appearance is much more modern, at the end of the model release period, the appearance of the front hood was changed, which received a full-fledged model with a hood that looks much more modern than the tin model known from favorites. The interior is also modernized, the seats are more comfortable, the dashboard is much more transparent than in the favorite. The engines are also from the predecessor, but diesel engines and Volkswagen units were also installed.

TYPICAL FAULTS

Steering system

Knocks in the Felicja transmission are normal, the handlebars are also often replaced. With high mileage, rubber boots are under pressure.

Transmission

The gearbox is a fairly mechanically strong element. Things are worse with the gearshift mechanism, often in the event of a high mileage, the crosspiece that connects the gearbox to the gearshift lever breaks. Leaks from the gearbox are a common nuisance during ordinary rides on curbs, a piece of the gearbox housing often comes off, which is basically the norm for Felicia. The rubber coverings of the hinges do not last long, which, if not noticed, leads to damage to the joints.

Clutch

The clutch works properly for long kilometers, occasionally the clutch cable may break, the clutch lever seizes or the noise of the release bearing disappears when the clutch is pressed, which is very annoying.

ENGINE

Skoda engines have an improved power system, there is no carburetor and there is injection. Older models used single point injection (fig. 1), newer models used MPI injection. Mechanically, the engines are very durable, the worse the equipment, the more often the shaft position sensors are damaged, the throttle mechanism is dirty. In the cooling system, the thermostat or water pump is often damaged.

Hamulce

Simple braking system in design. A common problem is that the front caliper guides stick out, and the rear brake adjusters often stick. They also corrode metal wires and cylinders.

Body

Corrosion is no stranger to Felicia, especially when it comes to the tailgate, which is heavily corroded on most of the Felicia (Photos 2,3,4), which is clearly a manufacturing defect and not a reason for poor sheet metal repairs. With high mileage, corrosion can attack the attachment of the front suspension arms to the body, which should be considered, as repairs can be difficult and costly. Door hinges often break, especially on the driver's side (Photo 5). Decorative trims on the front pillars often bulge and deform, headlight mounts break (Photo 6).

Electrical installation

Wiring is undoubtedly the weakest point of the model, wires break in the engine area (Photo 7,8), which in turn causes problems in the power system. They corrode the connectors, impairing the current supply. In older models with single point injection, the ignition coil is often damaged (Fig. 9). There are also problems with light switches that like to block (Photo 10).

Suspension

Easy-to-assemble suspension, pins, rocker bushings and rubber elements can be damaged. Shock absorbers refuse to obey at high mileage, and suspension springs sometimes break.

Artificial plastics sometimes make rather unpleasant noises (Photo 11), the air supply adjustment is disturbed, the heater fan periodically beeps, and in winter the air intake controls are often damaged - they simply break. Plastic elements lose color, the top layer peels off (Photo 12,13,), seats often fly along rails, seat frames break, elements even ring during movement.

SUMMARY

The car can be recommended to people who use the car for driving, and not for the so-called. exquisite. A well-maintained Felicja can travel many miles without breakdowns if the car is properly cared for. Severe breakdowns are rare, most often such cars end up in a workshop with the replacement of oils or other consumables such as blocks, cables, etc.
