Tesla to use lasers to clean car windshields

The windshield of a car is a key element in providing visibility to the driver. If it is dirty or in poor condition, it can be fatal. Tesla is committed to keeping this part always clean with a new windshield wiper technology using laser beams.

Car maintenance can sometimes be a little tricky, as it is difficult to control the elements external to the car that contaminate the windshield, such as insects, bird debris, tree sap, and others. In many cases, drivers use sprinklers to clean the windshield with water or windshield washer fluid, but this is not always effective.

Tesla is looking for a new way to keep the windshield clean

Tesla invented a new way use lasers as wipers. On Tuesday, the US Patent and Trademark Office granted Tesla a patent for a way to use lasers to remove debris from a windshield and possibly other glass parts of a car.

Pulse laser cleaning

is called “Pulsed laser cleaning of debris accumulated on the glass of vehicles and photovoltaic installations”. The lasers will act as a "vehicle cleaning device comprising: a beam optics assembly configured to emit a laser beam to irradiate an area on a glass article installed in the vehicle.", according to the patent.

Tesla filed for a patent for laser technology in 2018, as previously reported by Electrek.

Glass board can reach Cybertruck

But just because an electric car company has a patent doesn't mean you'll see lasers in the next Tesla car. It is possible, but unlikely to be launched anytime soon. Tesla filed a patent last month for a new method of forming glass for the Cybertruck that involves glass, but it will be some time before that becomes a reality.

In the meantime, we'll have to wait until the Cybertruck enters production in late 2022 or early 2023.
