Tesla Model Y Performance - the real range at 120 km / h is 430-440 km, at 150 km / h - 280-290 km. Revelation...

German company Nextmove has tested the range of Tesla Model Y Performance at speeds of 120 and 150 km / h. This is an American version of the car, which is not yet available in Europe, but the results of cars intended for our continent should not differ significantly. Conclusions? Despite the 21-inch rims, the car has achieved excellent results.

Tesla Model Y Performance, Specification:

  • segment: D-SUV,
  • battery capacity: 74 (80) kWh,
  • stated range: 480 pcs. WLTP,
  • drive: Four-wheel drive,
  • price: from € 71, which is equivalent to PLN 015 thousand
  • availability: mid 2021 ?,
  • competition: Jaguar I-Pace (more expensive, weaker range), Mercedes EQC (more expensive, weaker range, availability issues), Tesla Model 3 (D segment, cheaper, better range, weaker range possible in winter).

Tesla Y Performance coverage on the highway

The tests were held in different conditions: "I am trying to accelerate to 120 km / h" and "I am trying to accelerate to 150 km / h." We emphasize this “attempt” because although the speed was set to cruise control, the traffic density on the motorways and road works areas usually does not allow maintaining a constant pace throughout the trip.

It was the same here: at 120 km / h, an average of 108 km / h according to the GPS readings and 110 km / h according to the car. At a speed of 150 km / h - 145 km / h according to GPS. Notably, the car had 21-inch Überturbine Wheels, which reduces the car's range to 480 WLTP units:

Tesla Model Y and range at 120 km / h

In a loop about 95 kilometers long, the car consumed 16 kWh of energy, which corresponds to 16,7 kWh / 100 km (167 Wh / km). We add that the calculation result is slightly different (16,8 kWh / 100 km), but Nextmove makes a reservation that this is the effect of measurement inaccuracy when using the meter readings in percent.

Assuming the Tesla Model Y has a battery capacity of 74 kWh, on fully charged batteries, the car must travel up to 443 kilometers... Nextmove calculated on the assumption that it had 72 kWh at its disposal, but it is unclear why Tesla provided 74 kWh in the Model 3 and only 72 kWh in the Model Y.

Anyway, a company spokesman calculated that The range of Tesla Model Y Performance at 120 km / h is up to 430 kilometers... The version without Performance, Long Range AWD, in his opinion, should travel 455-470 km without recharging. This is a result similar to the Model 3 with all-wheel drive.

For comparison: a Porsche Taycan 4S with a battery with a useful capacity of 76 kWh at a speed of 120 km / h covers 341 kilometers on a single charge. With an enlarged battery, this would be about 404 kilometers:

However, remember that we are comparing a low-slung sports car to a crossover, so the list should be considered an interesting one. The Model Y will compete with the electric Porsche Macan.

TMY and range at 150 km / h

At 150 km/h – a speed banned in most of the world – the car showed an consumption of 25,4 kWh/km (254 Wh/km). Assuming a usable battery capacity of 74 kWh, the range at this speed is 291 kilometers. At 72 kWh, this will be 283 km on a single charge:

The result of the Tesla Model Y at 120 km / h is staggering when you consider that direct competitors cover shorter distances while maintaining 90 km / h! At 120 km / h, only another Tesla can handle Tesla's electric crossover.
