Introduction

It all started with a phone call from Mr. Michal, Reader, who called me on Wednesday afternoon:

– Mr. Lukasz, Tesla invited me to the Tesla Model Y preview on Friday, August 20th. Will you too?

“Oh no, I don’t know anything about it.

The conversation lasted for several minutes, Mr. Michal said that he was ready to take some photos and share his impressions on the way back. In fact, I was not particularly surprised that we were not invited, because a) there is no Tesla in the editorial office, b) we know Musk's approach to the media. Acceptable situation, but ... after finishing the conversation, I jumped into the car and went to the car dealership to check if there was a Tesle Model Y in the parking lot.

Then I wrote to you that the presentation was "for the elite at the weekend", although I already knew that the show would be on Friday. Don't be angry: I wanted to show you a closer look at the car, to sell the news, but not to cause trouble for the informant or the salon, so I shifted the date a little:

When I checked the company's mailbox the next day, there were TEN from the tesla.com domain among dozens of other emails. An exclusive invitation to the pre-premiere car show. He jumped up with joy. It was as cool as inviting Kia to the EV6 show, Nissan to talk to Aria, Mercedes to meet the EQC. Like an invitation to a pastry shop for a free fondant tasting... I couldn't refuse.

Tesla Model Y meeting

The cars met me immediately after entering the car dealership: on the right, Tesla Model 3 Performance, on the left - Tesla Model Y Long Range on 20 '' Induction Discs... First impression? Despite my excitement before, it didn't knock me down, it was normalI've seen the Tesla Model 3 before, and the Model Y is an improved version of the TM3. For someone who is not interested in cars from a California manufacturer, it will be difficult to distinguish these cars on the road:

TMY - general impressions

I walked around the car, watching it from less and more distance. I searched for issues that internet commenters like to describe, like poor fit, paint damage, etc. I didn't find any. We associate China with cheap goods that do not meet standards. But when a producer comes in and says, “Money is not a problem, we want quality,” everything changes. There is nothing to complain about in the Tesla Model Y LR "Made in China", the sheets fit well, the paintwork looks great:

Everything is fine in the interior too. As noted by Mr. Michal, the joining of the glass roof and its supporting beams is ideal, even if there is no room for a finger and no loose fabrics. The cockpit is ascetic, and therefore aesthetically pleasing, the position is comfortable, and the round steering wheel is "just right", although it looks too small in the photographs. I would not be offended if it was slightly flattened at the bottom.

The materials, albeit artificial (marketing words: vegan), make a good impression.tastefully placed color accents. I really liked the place for the phone, Model 3 and Model Y are probably the only cars that do not try to force me to use only the car multimedia system - the driver sees at least part of the smartphone display:

The Tesla Model Y driver's seat is both reassuring and reassuring. It's hard for me to accurately describe this feeling, I experience similar emotions when I drive at night in cars with natural light. In them, the eye is attracted by single expressive lines of light cracks, the rest of the details disappear in the dark. In the Model Y, I felt it even during the day, I suspect that due to the lack of buttons, deflectors and levers. The amount of distracting details is minimized, almost all lines are horizontal:

The Tesla Model Y cockpit is not distracting, the driver's goal is to focus on driving. I hope I can figure out all these options hidden somewhere on the screen 🙂

It's easier to get into the car than the Tesla Model 3 because the seats are higher. In Model 3 I got the impression (I got the impression) that I was hanging low over the road, in Model Y it was "normal", i.e. in the style of a crossover or minivan.

Backseat

I am not very much a supporter of the "I sit behind me" test, because my children usually ride in the back seat in car seats. But I sat down. A 1,9 meter man is comfortable behind him.... I also measured that:

  • width of the sofa in the middle: Tesla Model Y = 130 cm | Kia EV6 = 125 cm | Skoda Enyaq iV = 130 cm,
  • center seat width (measurement between belt buckles): Tesla Model Y = 25 cm | Kia EV6 = 24 cm | Skoda Enyaq iV = 31,5 cm,
  • seat depth (dimension along the vehicle axis): Tesla Model Y = 46 cm | Kia EV6 = 47 cm | Skoda Enyaq iV = 48 cm,
  • distance of the seat from the floor parallel to the lower leg: Tesla Model Y = 37 cm | Kia EV6 = 32 cm | Skoda Enyaq iV = 35 cm,
  • back height: Tesla Model Y = 97-98 cm,
  • Isofix mounting distance at the rear: 47,5 see.

Conclusions? The seat of the Tesla Model Y sofa is the same as in the Skoda Enyaq iV, but Tesla has relied on the comfort of passengers sitting on the sides, at the expense of the space in the middle. So it will be most comfortable to ride in a 2 + 2 configuration. The edge of the sofa is higher than that of competitors, so the feet of adult passengers will be more comfortable than in a Skoda, not to mention a Kia. I'm talking about that annoying stabbing pain in the lower thighs that begins to show after two hours of travel. The knees will also be comfortable, they have at least 4 centimeters of space.

I still can't convince myself that there is no shelf behind the backs, although I appreciate the opportunity to get into the trunk for something.

Tesla Model Y trunk capacity - this parameter was not known to anyone. Until now

Tesla does not mention the volume of the luggage compartment when the backrests are unfolded. After folding them, we have 2 liters left, but how much is it with a normal setting? I asked about this and got the following answer:

Tesla does not want to reveal the capacity of the trunk with the backrests folded out, so as not to mislead buyers. The configuration (backrest angle) can be changed.

The explanation makes sense, but Hyundai in the Ioniqu 5 coped with it: as far as I know, it gives the lowest possible value. All the same, nothing prevents Tesla from giving the coupe, right? In any case, our measurements showed that Loading capacity of TMY is:

  • about 135 liters of space under the floor,
  • about 340 liters of main space no slopes,
  • not less than 538 liters after adding the above values and the inclination of the tailgate and seats.

I measure the trunk. You will hear the exact values in the video

As I mentioned in the video, in standard luggage capacity measurements you don't use a measuring cup or virtual water, but you use bricks to even out the available space. If the brick is not included - it is not included - that's all. Tried to include measuring in the narrowest possible places (e.g. between wheel arches). Therefore, I believe that these 538 liters are an honest measurement.

We hereby, as the editorial board of www.elektrowoz.pl, assume that Tesla Model Y LR (2021) trunk volume - 538 liters at the back, plus side cutouts and a boot in the front. For comparison: the Ford Mustang Mach-E gives us 402 liters at the rear, the Mercedes EQC 500 liters and the Audi e-tron 664 liters.

Fun fact: taillights

In August 2020, we described the taillights on the Tesla Model Y. We have already announced that they will migrate to the Tesla Model 3, and we expected to have them no later than the first quarter of 2021. Imagine our surprise when, in July 2021, it turned out that the Tesle Model 3, available in the showroom, still has an old light pattern with a large side light along the edge, a narrow brake light and a tiny indicator (inactive below):

And what about the series that will hit the show in August? Just as we described it a year ago. We got the brake lights integrated with the outer edge of the side lights, and the narrow lines inside the light were all about the turn signals. New headlights have been in Tesla Model Y since the beginning, and now they are in Tesla Model 3. It's better, just look:

It is worth remembering this difference, it will come in handy in the future to assess the timing of the release of cars on the secondary market.

Summation

I was looking forward to this show. If only because we were going to see Model Y in Europe before, say, Bjorn Nyland. I came, I saw the car messed up my mind. This is a solid crossover of the D-SUV segment with a giant trunk, large interior space, an aesthetic cabin, and solid materials. Not to mention the range, software or access to the Supercharger - the undeniable advantages of cars from the Californian manufacturer.

But as I watched the other people in the showroom, I saw that they were coldly and intently approaching the car. I believe there are two reasons. The first is the looks: the Tesla Model Y isn't the prettiest model in the segment - although I was fascinated by the beefy silhouette in the rear - and without a test drive it's hard to admire its swiftness or software capabilities.

The second, more important blockade may come at a cost. 300 PLN 50 for the basic LR variant is a lot of money. Even people who have that kind of money wonder if they really want to spend it, as they have a Tesla Model 3 LR for PLN XNUMX cheaper – a car with a sportier silhouette, offering at the same time slightly better parameters (acceleration, power reserve). .

Another thing is that the price of Tesla Model Y LR (from PLN 299) means that Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes EQC have no chance, they lose on the spot... Ford Mustang Mach-E may try to tackle silhouette and cheaper rear-wheel drive, BMW iX3 with premium interior and overall brand perception, Hyundai Ioniq 5 with looks and price, Mercedes EQB with seven seats, Volkswagen vehicles on MEB platform with price and more compact dimensions (border segments C- and D-SUV). Well, even the Tesla Model Y LR seen here could lose out to its sisters who leave the Berlin plant.

I envy you with all my heart that you have to make this choice... And I'm getting to work so we can finally start making real money because these immediately available Y models are tempting :)
