Tesla is below the EPA numbers. Sensational Porsches, Shine Mini and Hyundai-Kia, […

Edmunds has compiled a list of EV ranges in real-world applications compared to manufacturer-supplied data obtained from EPA procedures. All Tesla, without exception, glow red, while the Porsche Taycan 4S, which cost more than 159 percent of the official price, performed well.

The US EPA procedure is equivalent to the WLTP procedure used in Europe. It usually better reflects the actual EV lineup, although we're already making adjustments with Tesla and Korean cars. Also, with the models of German manufacturers, we will make a reservation that the assortment in the catalog may be overly pessimistic.

Model range of electric vehicles - manufacturer's promises against facts

The measurements were taken by the Edmunds portal. Here is the rating of the ranges with the manufacturer's statements resulting from the official measurement and calculation procedure of the portal for discharging the battery to zero. The list has been compiled from cars that offer more than what is listed in the catalog to cars that are the worst performing on their promises (tests were carried out at different temperatures):

  1. Porsche Taycan 4S (2020) – declaration: 327 km, in kind: 520 km, difference: +59,3 (!) percent,
  2. Mini Cooper SE (2020) – declaration: 177 km, in kind: 241 km, difference: +36,5 percent,
  3. Hyundai Kona Electric (2019) – declaration: 415 km, in kind: 507 km, difference: +21,9 percent,
  4. Kia e-Niro (2020) – declaration: 385 km, in kind: 459 km, difference: +19,2 percent,
  5. Hyundai Ioniq Electric (2020) – declaration: 273,5 km, in kind: 325 km, difference: +18,9 percent,
  6. Ford Mustang Mach-E all-wheel drive XR – declaration: 434,5 km, in kind: 489 km, difference: +12,6 percent,
  7. Nissan Leaf e + [SL] (2020) – declaration: 346 km, in kind: 381 km, difference: +10,2 percent,
  8. Audi e-tron Sportback (2021) – declaration: 315 km, in kind: 383 km, difference: +9,2 percent,
  9. Chevrolet Bolt (2020) – declaration: 417 km, in kind: 446 km, difference: +6,9 percent,
  10. Polestar 2 Performance (2021 years) – declaration: 375 km, in kind: 367 km, difference: -2,1%,
  11. Tesla Model S Performance (2020) – declaration: 525 km, in kind: 512 km, difference: -2,5%,
  12. Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (2020) – declaration: 402 km, in kind: 373 km, difference: -7,2%,
  13. Tesla Model Y Performance (2020) – declaration: 468 km, in kind: 423 km, difference: -9,6%,
  14. Tesla Model X Long Range (2020) – declaration: 528 km, in kind: 473 km, difference: -10,4%,
  15. Tesla Model 3 Performance (2018) – declaration: 499 km, in kind: 412 km, difference: -17,4%.

As we mentioned at the beginning, all Teslas are negative, they will glow red in the table. On the other hand, the Porsche Taycan 4S, the weakest model with a large battery, comes out great, which was also the result of Bjorn Nyland's tests:

> A Porsche Taycan 4S range with a larger battery and special tires? 579 km at 90 km / h and 425 km at 120 km / h

And what would the above list look like if we compiled it according to the proposed real coverage? Let's see:

  1. Porsche Taycan 4S (2020) – declaration: 327 km, real: 520 km, difference: +59,3 (!) percent,
  2. Tesla Model S Performance (2020) – declaration: 525 km, real: 512 kmdifference: -2,5%
  3. Hyundai Kona Electric (2019) – declaration: 415 km, real: 507 kmdifference: + 21,9%
  4. Ford Mustang Mach-E all-wheel drive XR – declaration: 434,5 km, real: 489 kmdifference: + 12,6%
  5. Tesla Model X Long Range (2020) – declaration: 528 km, real: 473 kmdifference: -10,4%
  6. Chevrolet Bolt (2020) – declaration: 417 km, real: 446 kmdifference: + 6,9%
  7. Kia e-Niro (2020) – declaration: 385 km, real: 459 kmdifference: + 19,2%
  8. Tesla Model Y Performance (2020) – declaration: 468 km, real: 423 kmdifference: -9,6%
  9. Tesla Model 3 Performance (2018) – declaration: 499 km, real: 412 km, difference: -17,4%
  10. Audi e-tron Sportback (2021) – declaration: 315 km, real: 383 kmdifference: + 9,2%
  11. Nissan Leaf e + [SL] (2020) – declaration: 346 km, real: 381 kmdifference: + 10,2%
  12. Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (2020) – declaration: 402 km, real: 373 kmdifference: -7,2%
  13. Polestar 2 Performance (2021 years) – declaration: 375 km, real: 367 kmdifference: -2,1%
  14. Hyundai Ioniq Electric (2020) – declaration: 273,5 km, real: 325 kmdifference: + 18,9%
  15. Mini Cooper SE (2020) – declaration: 177 km, real: 241 km, difference: +36,5 percent

It turns out that the Porsche Taycan also took first place in this ranking. Unfortunately, The list is missing three important, probably the most popular models of the line: Tesla Model 3 and Y Long Range and Model S Long Range [Plus]. Edmunds only tested the Performance variants. Therefore, let's write out the manufacturer's declared EPA values in a separate list:

  • Tesla Model S Long Range (2021) – declaration: 663 km,
  • Tesla Model S Long Range Plus (2020) – declaration: 647 km,
  • Tesla Model 3 Long Range (2021) – declaration: 568 km,
  • Tesla Model Y Long Range (2021) – declaration: 521 km.

If the aforementioned cars distorted the ranges as much as the Performance versions, they would take 1st, 2nd, 9th and 8th places respectively - the Model Y LR would be better than the Model 3 LR. This has been marked with a space in the list..

Note from the editors www.elektrowoz.pl: The EPA procedure allows coverage of the range using abbreviated and extended methods. The extended method may give better (higher) results. In addition, the manufacturer influences the result obtained by means of a coefficient that he can select within a certain range. For example, Porsche decided to use it to shrink the Taycan catalog. Why do they make such decisions? This information is not disclosed.
