Test: Audi A6 3.0 TDI (180 kW) Quattro S-Tronic

So customers who choose between one or the other will have an easy job - as long as they know if they want more flexibility in the trunk and interior, or the elegance of a "real" sedan's exterior.

In any case, those who prefer the A6 will get a respectable and pleasant car that has changed significantly from its predecessor. The new A6 has also made a lot of progress in terms of design, the new design, in addition to being elegant, also provides a very dynamic look.

But there is fair disagreement about the exterior: the remarks of those that are difficult to distinguish between modern Audi are even more justified. There are practically no differences by which at first glance it would be possible to understand that this is a "eight", not a "six", or A6, not A4 (or A5 Sportback). However, we must bear in mind that Audi has taken a particularly clever approach to design.

They always provide inexpensive car buyers with ample points of contact with the next higher-end Audi, which certainly brings added satisfaction! So: The A6 looks almost like the A8 and that might be a good enough reason to buy.

What's especially compelling is the feeling when we get into the passenger compartment of the A6. Of course, it's best if you're just driving. We would have no problem adjusting it in the driver's seat, but the undersigned was not feeling well after several hours of driving.

It was only after studying the complex mechanism for further adjusting the rigidity and design of the driver's backrest that the impression was again satisfactory. When we get into the A6, of course, we find that the interior is no different from the A7. This is definitely a good thing, because on tests of this Audi, we have already made sure that it is really of high quality and useful.

Of course, a lot depends on how much we are willing to sacrifice for the various equipment options (especially in terms of the choice of material for the dashboard and upholstery). Thus, the richly equipped dashboard convinces with its appearance and the materials used, as well as the precision of its workmanship. This is where Audi's superiority over all premium brands comes to the fore.

The same is true for the MMI control (multimedia system that combines most of what can be configured or controlled in the car). The rotary knob is also assisted by the touchpad, which changes depending on what we want to edit, it can only be a dial, but it can also accept fingerprints. The extra buttons next to the center rotary knob are helpful.

It takes a lot of practice to master (or check over and over which buttons we press). This is why the buttons on the steering wheel are most useful as they work without problems and the functions are then tested on a small center screen between the two sensors.

This way of controlling everything the A6 has to offer seems to be the safest, and everything else - even changing the look of the large screen that appears on the control panel at startup - requires a lot of driver concentration, which would sometimes be more necessary to watch what is happening on road. But every user with the right attitude to safe driving decides for himself when he will pay more attention to the car and less traffic ...

Our A6 had a long list of accessories (and the price has gone up a lot from the base one), but many people will still miss out on some extras. With all the electronic support, for example, there was no radar cruise control (but even regular cruise control did its job well over long distances or where strict adherence to restrictions was needed).

You could happily ditch the DVD / CD server in exchange for the usual AUX, USB and iPod connections (Audi offers an Audi music interface for a hefty surcharge). For those looking for secure telephony, the A6 will not disappoint. Operation and connection are simple.

Audi does not require additional payments for the Bluetooth connection, but this is only possible with the purchase of MMI and radio, and for this you need to add a total of just under two thousandths. So do not be surprised if even the owners of the new expensive A6 will travel like monthly magazines with their mobile phone in their hands and to their ears!

It is by no means to be understood that Audi still offers a smart key that otherwise has a remote control to open the locks, but you no longer need a key inside the car to start, because a button on the instrument panel takes over this function. Bad solution that will help you log in and use the key, but understandable, because the more convenient (really smart key that can stay in your pocket or wallet all the time) just needs to be bought.

But who would complain about such little things when they end up being driven in a solid premium sedan!

To what has been written about the ride and performance, there is not much to add compared to the fully motorized Audi A7, which we wrote about in the third issue of Avto magazine this year. With regular tires, of course, a little more dynamic and more pleasant for fast driving in corners, the steering wheel is also a little more accurate.

Tires with a lower coefficient of friction and other properties more important for warmer conditions also contribute to economical fuel consumption. The aforementioned longer motorway driving proved to be a good test of economy, and the average fuel consumption of 7,4 liters at maximum speed on Italian motorways is really surprising. This is where the lightweight design comes in, with which Audi engineers have reduced the vehicle's weight (compared to its competitors, but also to its predecessor).

The A6 is an interesting car in every sense, with very modern technology (the standard stop-start system that needs to be disabled due to the quick reaction in traffic), with an excellent transmission, the dual clutch transmission only occasionally slows down. behind the "real" machine; all-wheel drive is generally convincing), with a reputation at least as good as other "premium" and with comfort that makes long journeys much easier.

However, everyone decides for himself what is the ratio between the price and what you get for it.

Face to face…

Vinko Kernc: Audi's timeline is a little unfortunate: when the A8 sits right on the market, there's already an A6 here, which, except for being slightly smaller, honestly goes down the drain. At the moment, buying a turbodiesel may no longer be the smartest decision due to general technical trends in the automotive industry, and even more so because Audi petrol engines are superior and - better than diesels. But make no mistake - even such a powerful A6 is a top product.

Overall rating (364/420)

  • If we look at it with an open but full wallet, the purchase is profitable. Even at Audi, they charge even more for every additional desire.

  • Exterior (13/15)

A classic sedan - it’s hard for some to understand, “six”, “seven” or “eight”.

  • Interior (112/140)

Large enough, only the fifth passenger should be slightly smaller, impressive for the nobility of materials and workmanship.

  • Engine, transmission (61

    / 40)

The engine and drive are ideal for common transport needs and are also suitable for the S tronic.

  • Driving performance (64

    / 95)

You can drive with great dynamics and adapt the suspension to your current needs.

  • Performance (31/35)

Well, there are no comments on turbodiesel, but Audi also offers more powerful gasoline ones.

  • Security (44/45)

    Almost perfect.

  • Economy (39/50)
