Test: Chevrolet Orlando 1.8 LTZ

Since it is rectangular in shape, like a mobile home, it was the main find of the jokers. But what else could be expected from an American car, the arrows flew to the new Chevrolet, which is actually made at General Motors' plant in South Korea. As a result, we collectively discovered that the nose of the car, despite its huge mask and almost grotesque logo, is even beautiful, and the car as a whole is consistent. Yes, in a way, it's even pretty.

After a good impression of the exterior, we were surprised by the interior. True, some things smell like America, but the form and functionality of the driver's environment is impressive. The front seats are good, the driving position is excellent, even the rear wiper is attached to the end of the right lever on the steering wheel so that you can see the car with a flick of your right finger. Well done, Chevy! Someone has to tell you about the closed box hidden in the upper part of the center console, otherwise there is a high probability that you will miss it. I'll tell you, perfect for smugglers.

Then we go further and see that what they were doing with their hands (good), they knocked down with their buttocks. Why did they put the USB and iPod ports on the bottom edge of this hidden drawer so you can't close the lid with a regular USB dongle? Why, then, did they put the on-board computer control on the left lever on the steering wheel, so you annoyingly have to turn part of that lever to get through the selectors?

The trunk is even worse. While we can boast of our size and the correct shape, with a seven-seat layout, there is nowhere to put the roller shutter. So you need a garage or basement so that you can drive seven people in this car at all. Hey? The upper bench in the second row does not move longitudinally (sorry!), But in the sixth and seventh seats, there is enough room for my 180 centimeters and 80 kilograms to easily survive a short trip through Slovenia. There is no Promised Land in the back, but it can be survived thanks to the higher seating position, since we put less stress on our legs. However, when tuning the tire, forget about the barrel, as it is only left for the sample.

Chevrolet Orlando is driver-friendly, although he doesn't know how to handle such large movable property. The rearview mirrors are so huge you won't be ashamed of them in any small bathroom, and family orientation reveals interior mirrors that show what's going on in the rear seats. The square body makes it easier to navigate where the bumpers end, and when parking in tight spaces, you can also rely on the parking sensors. It's a shame they were only attached to the back, as the machine's generous nose is a little misleading.

You know the situation where you have the feeling that it is about to explode, and then you see that there is still 30 inches of space left. While driving, you will immediately notice that the trump card of this car is the chassis, and the cons are the engine and transmission. The chassis is mostly used by Orlando and Opel Astro and they are also announcing it for the new Zafira so it deserves a big plus. Thanks to the precise steering system, cornering is a pleasure, not a strain, if you forget about the 1,8-liter gasoline engine. This base engine is a lazier type, which is not surprising because despite the twin cam technology, the engine is mostly old and redesigned to meet the Euro5 emission standard.

In other words: the already old engine had to be strangled even more so that it did not exhale too many environmentally harmful substances through the exhaust pipe. Thus, the speed will average up to 100 km / h, although this will require a fair amount of pressure on the gas, and above this speed it becomes anemic. Whether the aerodynamics at home are to blame, as the pranksters continued, the old engine or just the five-speed gearbox, we don't know. Probably a combination of all three. This is why we are already waiting for two-liter turbo diesel versions, which mainly have a six-speed transmission and more torque. In our opinion, it is worth paying an additional 2.500 euros, which is the difference between a comparable gasoline and turbodiesel Orlando, since 12 liters of average fuel consumption really cannot be a source of pride for future owners.

The new Chevrolet with the Latin American name, despite its boxy shape, is not a mobile home, but it could be a pleasant second home. To be clear, we spend more time at work than at home (not counting sleep) and more and more time on the road. Especially in Auto Magazine, Orlando was our second home.

Overall rating (317/420)

  • It lost a few points due to the engine and just a five-speed gearbox, but gained in price and comfort. We can't wait to experience the turbodiesel!

  • Exterior (12/15)

Interesting, recognizable, even a little exotic.

  • Interior (99/140)

Compared to competitors, it loses mainly in the trunk and interior, but it certainly does not lag behind them in terms of comfort and ergonomics.

  • Engine, transmission (51

    / 40)

If we tested the turbo diesel and six-speed gearbox, it would perform significantly better in this category.

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

Road position is one of the strengths of this car, as the chassis is basically the same as the Astrin.

  • Performance (21/35)

In terms of performance, we can say: slowly and with pleasure.

  • Security (33/45)

We have no major concerns about passive safety, and Chevrolet has not been very generous with active safety.

  • Economy (45/50)

Medium warranty and good price, slightly higher fuel consumption and a big loss of value when selling a used one.
