How the collision avoidance system, blind spot and lane tracking work in the popular Japanese crossover

Even 10 years ago, it was difficult to imagine that electronic assistants would stop annoying the driver. Today, parking sensors, rear-view cameras, and all roadside assistance systems have become more than just standard equipment for a car - without them, the car seems outdated and cannot withstand the competition. These options have long been in the premium database, but the more affordable mass market also offers security packages - for a surcharge or in top versions. We tested not the most popular Nissan Qashqai LE + equipment, but it has everything you need for city driving.

Only calm

The interior of the Nissan Qashqai does not look dated, although the design is almost six years old. There are no sensors here - buttons and handwheels are everywhere. Thanks to the successful arrangement of devices, there are no strange empty niches, incomprehensible buttons on the dashboard - everything is exactly where the hand intuitively reaches.

The leather seats with good lateral relief are conveniently adjusted with electronic buttons on the side. There is also a lumbar support, so the back support is well felt. The rear row heating setting is located next to the driver's armrest. This is an unusual solution, but an explanation can be found for it. It seems that the Japanese are confident that children will ride in the back, and they should not be trusted to control any buttons.

You don't have to take the key out of your pocket - our version has keyless access. There are also driver assistance systems. One of them is the Forward Emergency Braking system. But it is worth considering that the system works only at speeds from 40 to 80 km / h, and also does not see pedestrians, bicycles and even large obstacles if they are not metal.

Everything works simply: first, a sound signal warns of approaching an obstacle, a large exclamation mark is displayed on the panel. And then, first smoothly, and then abruptly, the car will brake on its own. Moreover, if the driver decides to intervene at any stage of the process, the system will turn off and give priority to his actions. Other systems operate in a similar proactive manner. When crossing the lane mark without a direction indicator, the car will notify the driver with a sound signal - it does not matter if he is holding the wheel or not. This disciplines well and encourages those who forget about turn signals to comply with traffic rules. Blind spot monitoring adds color to the audio signal - small orange lights near the side mirrors light up when sensors detect a nearby vehicle.

Established Japanese navigation, both in image quality and in size, is much inferior to Yandex systems, which are installed in medium configurations. However, it cannot be called uninformative: it also quickly finds and plans a route, takes into account traffic jams and gives voice prompts in a trembling computer voice. An experiment with Yandex.Navigator turned on in parallel on a smartphone showed that the calculated routes on the phone and by car turned out to be identical. Of what else can be asked of this car, the only thing missing is the adaptive cruise. Well, Nissan also offers only one USB-input on the front panel, but it serves as a charger or as an adapter for a smartphone-player. Our near-top version has neither Car Play nor Android Auto. This is again the prerogative of simpler versions with Yandex.

The cost of the test version in the LE + configuration is $ 24. And this amount already includes all driver assistance systems, including emergency braking, lane change assistance, lift and parking assistance, as well as all kinds of vehicle monitoring sensors, dual-zone climate, leather interior, a good rear-view camera and sensitive front parking sensors. But more modern media versions with a head unit from Yandex are offered at an even more attractive price - from $ 430. And this is so far the best that dealers still have in this class of cars.
