Test: Honda Civic 2.2 i-DTEC Sport

It's true: current and former Civics seem to be the same car, with only minor design changes.

The technical point of view, starting with the new platform, refutes this theory. And the fact that the Civic (at first glance) is what it is today seems right.

One view is entirely design. Design is fashion and consumers are used to fashion changing faster than car models. So, if a car is not in the most fashionable shape, but neat and successful, it has a good chance of not aging as quickly as most others. Take, for example, Golf.

Everything else is what lies on the Civic by specialty. Since the exterior doesn't really follow any set guidelines, its interior is also different. The Civic has a sporty look, being muscular, stocky and having a flat windshield. So flat that - given the fact that it sits (too) high - whoever likes to sit close to the steering wheel quickly meets - with a sun visor. No, not during normal behavior in the car, but, for example, when you sit down, so that it is more convenient to fit in the seat.

The rear window is even flatter, but routed so that this Civic, when viewed from the clay, would almost look like a van. And not a coupe. Or just … But I want to say something else: under the rear window is the trunk, which is basically a liter very large, 70 liters more than the Mégane, and a whopping 125 liters than the Golf, and it is almost completely square in shape. . Then, speaking of luggage, here are some more nice features: the bench splits into thirds, with the back folded down, everything lowers slightly in one simple movement, and a nice flat surface is created. But that's not all; in the normal rear seat position, we can (again simply) raise the seat back (towards the back), which again creates a large, even very high space. Some people see a small ficus there, others see a dog, and the point is not that the Civic is something special, but that it has something special that can be really useful. Yes, it’s true that the previous generation had the same thing, but competitors do not yet have a similar solution. And in all of this, the Civic feels like a sports car, a bit like a coupe.

Each specialty is also worth something. Of course, the new Civic also inherits the shape of a two-part rear window, the bottom of which is almost vertical. As a reminder of those Civics from the eighties (the first CRX), which left such a strong impression not only on us. Okay, broken glass. As long as you look at him from the outside, nothing really bothers you, since he fits perfectly into the big picture. However, it is confusing when it is necessary to find out from the driver's seat what is hidden behind him. The eraser wipes only the upper (flat to remember) glass, the lower one is not erased. But often in the rain, even on the highway, it is not distilled water, but a lot of water mixed with mud, due to which even the lower glass and part of the upper glass become invisible. Imagine another night, rain and reversing ...

Here Honda hasn't solved the problem in the best possible way. The Civic has a rear-view camera, but this one, like everyone else, doesn't help in the rain. Even a simple audio parking device would greatly improve the situation as well as the visual representation of the approaching obstacle in general. Knowingly judge how much restraint this can mean for you in your daily driving life.

The interior of the new Civic has changed a little more than its exterior. Now it transmits information to the driver a little differently (sensors, screen), and the steering wheel is different. Or the buttons on it: they have become more ergonomic, more logical and more convenient to use. Even the interface between driver and digital devices is now more intuitive, friendly and with better selectors. However, the look of the dashboard remains rather "technical", especially on the XNUMX analog gauge cluster, though (and there's nothing wrong with that) all the technical feel is just the result of design, not background technology.

It now sits well in the front seats with a solid side grip that doesn't interfere with getting in and out. The seats are firm but comfortable, with enough room for tall people. Even more impressive is rear seat space, as both height and length are surprisingly large for this class, and the front seat backs are padded so your knees don't hurt. There is also a central armrest and drawers in the door that can also hold a small bottle, but we missed a 12V outlet, a reading light, a drawer (there is only one pocket - on the right back side), maybe. also adjustable air slots.

In the test Civic, we usually only lacked a navigation device (and possibly a smart key), but otherwise this is one of the few cars in our test that (apart from the sports package) did not have any additional equipment, but was still offered. almost everything that is expected from a car in this class. This is a very good audio system, only interfered with by the occasional shaking of the inner lining at the sound of low frequencies. And overall, even before you dive into the details, the interior blackness down to the bottom edge of the glass (over it the coatings are gray) and the exterior leave a very good impression, and the materials and workmanship are characteristically high. for Japanese goods. What stands out is the excellent, especially the soundproofing of the cabin, since diesel noise and vibration are perfectly dampened.

Civics also traditionally have very good athletic genes. The chassis is very good, despite the semi-rigid rear axles, as it dampens bumps well and at the same time steers the wheels well and prevents unpleasant body lean. Probably the most sporty element in it is the gearbox, which shifts precisely and very quickly when needed, and the shift lever movements are short and with excellent feedback for shifting into gear. Its turbodiesel also looks sporty: it takes about 1.700 rpm to come to life, even in fourth gear it spins up easily to 4.500 rpm and at 3.000 rpm develops exceptional torque. Since it's sixth gear on the scale at about 190 mph, it stands to reason that it's still accelerating well from that point on. Like its capabilities, it impresses with its consumption; The approximate values of current consumption from the on-board computer - in sixth gear and at 100 km / h - 130 liters, 160 - five, 200 - six and 15 - 100 liters per 7,8 km. Our consumption measurements also showed a good picture, because despite occasional accelerations, and in other cases always at a high driving pace, the engine consumed just under 100 liters of diesel per XNUMX kilometers.

However, this time the sportiness of the Civic did not come to the fore, for which we blame the winter tires and the rather high air and asphalt temperatures (we can't try it yet), but still: even at the legal speed. on the highway, the Civic swayed slightly around the vertical axes (which required constant minor repairs to the steering wheel to move in a given direction, which later required constant attention), and in corners it gave an extremely bad feeling of what happens when the wheel contacts the ground. On this basis, it is difficult to objectively assess the steering wheel, which seemed, despite its accuracy and with the rest of the package mechanics, which is too soft, especially at high speeds. You see: we demand a little more than average from a car with good sporting genes and a sporty background.

But of course that's not what makes the Civic special. This is what the user experiences on a daily basis: its appearance both outside and inside, the spaciousness and flexibility of the cabin, which are theoretically incompatible with the sporty appearance and dimensions of the car, and, to a large extent, visibility on the road. So far, few people can boast of this.

Overall rating (346/420)

  • That Honda chose the evolution of the previous model turned out to be a good step. It has retained all its previous advantages, and some of them have been improved. A very versatile vehicle!

  • Exterior (13/15)

The appearance has all the elements: visibility, dynamism, consistency and much more.

  • Interior (109/140)

Plenty of room in this class, including the trunk. Also very good air conditioner. No major grievances.

  • Engine, transmission (56

    / 40)

The engine and transmission are on top, the transmission and chassis are close to those, only the steering wheel is a little soft.

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

In theory, one of the best, but (tiring?) In practice, it didn’t work out that way.

  • Performance (30/35)

When the engine has enough power and when the gearbox is perfect ...

  • Security (37/45)

Fairly limited rear visibility and no new active safety features.

  • Economy (45/50)

Surprisingly low consumption for this kind of power and our driving conditions.
