Test: Honda Jazz Hybrid Elegance

The foundation is good, the idea is even better: why not release the technique Insighta in CR-Z-I transferred to Jazz, which would thus become a true urban single-seat hybrid. Also the only one, so there is no competition. No sooner said than done. Jazz, in fact, has a few tricks up its sleeve that just need to be electrified.

Without remorse, it would be credited with playful handling that won't be a nightmare even in crowded city centers (some centers are already only available for hybrids or electric vehicles, which will become an increasingly common practice in the future!), Spacious passenger compartment and luggage can be accommodated in a car a class up (hey, 300 base liters or 1.320 liters with the rear seat folded down is downright impressive, although the hybrid has lost the flat bottom due to the extra powertrain in the folded rear seat), not to mention the Honda's superb build quality.

Also a hybrid set to keep us out of the way. Then we look at the price and think with a complete wallet: for a hybrid, it's pretty cheap, even if they are larger. Toyota Prius but a hybrid Auris in a nearby trading floor of a strong competitor. However, if the wallet is not so full, then almost 20 thousand is a big chunk for a city wanderer with an additional electric motor that only helps with the operation of the gas station.

As stated, this technique is already known from the larger Honda vehicles. The 1,3 liter petrol engine runs at full throttle with an electric motor that provides an extra dimension in Newton meters. Thanks to an additional electric motor and 70 kilograms of nickel-metal-hybrid batteries of the brand Panasonic he lost a few liters in the trunk, but there is still a lot of space left that can be used to the benefit of a large family. It is a pity that the back bench is not movable in the longitudinal direction, otherwise the seat and back can be hidden (in a ratio of one third: two thirds) in the leg area in one motion.

Replacing the replacement tire with a temporary refueling kit could be even better, but given the bad experience with conditionally fit alternative systems, car dealerships would also bet on the classic. Therefore, we will praise Hondo for not succumbing to hysteria, where every gram or millimeter matters, whether it is important from the user's point of view (read: useful) or not.

The combustion engine and electric motor move the Jazz very sovereignly, so don't be surprised if your passengers don't believe there's only a small displacement engine under the hood. The continuously variable CVT transmission provides the ideal gear ratio. Great, but with one big downside: you have to be willing to live with the noise the transmission makes at full throttle. It is very reminiscent of the noise from a sliding clutch or a modern city bus. The slopes become a nightmare, and it seems that the descent of Vrhnika on the Primorsko route is as much a challenge for hybrid jazz as a victory in Triglav is for a first grader.

But also because (or mostly because of it) Honda came up with two ways to move. The first is calm, thrifty and ascetic. If you want to get below six liters per 100 kilometers, you need style. It doesn't matter what you drive, but also how you drive in order to use the pension regime. I am not ashamed to admit that I gave up after two days of such a ride. At this time, you only need to caress the accelerator pedal, drive strictly in accordance with the restrictions and adapt to the traffic as much as possible so that it is not just acceleration and braking.

On my first day, I drove around town like a typical retiree, dragging myself from intersection to intersection, and spent more time driving, watching scantily clad young women and roadside billboards. When the on-board computer, to my delight, showed the current consumption of about five liters, I received an additional impulse and decided to give my best.

Economy mode (green button ECON ON) I was also helped by turning off the air conditioner and car radio, so that it was really organic. “All for science,” I said to myself, “and after several hours of torment in an overheated salon and solo singing, which probably would not have been suitable for a show.” Slovenia has talent, desperate.

Maybe by refusing, he will reach a consumption of 4,5 liters, but heck, if the driver has to adapt to the technique, and not vice versa, this is a bad decision. So I opted for a much more life-saving solution: ECON OFF, S program on the gearbox and manual shifting with levers on the steering wheel. CVT-engine noise has been significantly reduced thanks to the preset seven gears, and the driver will feel incredibly better as well.

And not only because of the included air conditioner and the music of professionals, but mainly because of the fast and almost imperceptible gear shifting ... So do not be surprised by the average consumption of more than seven liters; this is consumption without refusals and adjustments, and with current consumption we have also moved up to 13th place. We're saying, not to mention, that if you don't adapt your driving style to technology, you'll spend more with a Honda Jazz hybrid than with a comparable turbodiesel of the same size.

It is true that you will thus be emitting less CO2 into the air, which is currently the only criterion in Europe, since also (or even more) harmful NOx emissions are not taken into account at all. But the fact remains: Polo Bluemotion, Fiesta Econetic or similar screensavers are now a much more rational solution for the user, as they cost less, consume less, are less demanding in maintenance and are even more pleasant to drive in corners. The combination of taller Jazz, added weight, CVT drivetrain and fuel efficient tires won't please the dynamic driver.

Honda Jazz Hybrid it is only half a step towards a greener vehicle, of course, while ignoring the environmental integrity of additional batteries. Jazz is very suitable as a basis for alternative drives, which is why we are already looking forward to the Plug-In Hybrid and the all-electric version. When we start generating green electricity, we can do something with Honda for this one planet of ours.

Overall rating (303/420)

  • The Honda Jazz Hybrid is only half a step away from a truly useful plug-in hybrid, but then the trunk is likely to be disproportionately smaller. Now, however, the Jazz remains a very useful urban minivan that easily pampers even a large family. But if you want more driving pleasure, you better take a closer look at the CR-Z.

  • Exterior (12/15)

An interesting car that flirts more with families than with athletes.

  • Interior (94/140)

Plenty of space, some dissatisfaction with the cooling (always blowing!), Bad materials,

    excellent workmanship.

  • Engine, transmission (48

    / 40)

The engines work perfectly together, and the transmission only satisfies very slow or very reliable in automatic mode.

  • Driving performance (54

    / 95)

No eco-friendly tire has yet proven its ride and braking feel.

  • Performance (22/35)

Good acceleration and surprisingly high end speed.

  • Security (35/45)

Four airbags, curtain airbags and standard ESP.

  • Economy (38/50)

Relatively cheap for a hybrid, a lot for jazz. Average warranty.
