Test: KIA Cee´d 1.6 CRDi (94 kW) EX Maxx

Anyone who wanted a lower middle class Kio has probably already opened the bag. And that for significantly less money than Kia demands for the new Cee'd model. But we can look at it from a different angle and say: many customers were satisfied with the previous Kio, so they will definitely head to their showroom first to see the latest offer.

Let's leave the dilemmas of sales and marketing and focus on the car. Created in Germany and made in Slovakia, after the first reviews it was definitely a hit. The designers, headed by the famous Peter Schreyer, painted body strokes quite dynamically, as evidenced by a drag coefficient of only 0,30. This is XNUMX times better than its predecessor, which can also be attributed to the completely flat bottom. The headlights "look" very evil, they are also in a sporty spirit (to write in the spirit of economy?) For the daylight of a responsible LED.

We must not forget that the Hyundai i30 and Kia Cee'd are much more similar than dealers are willing to admit. And among the aforementioned factories, it is suggested that Kia should pamper more dynamic, younger drivers, while Hyundai should take care of the quieter ones, yes, you can also say that they are older or even more conservative. But it is precisely with Hyundai's new design policy that I feel that this once-pronounced dividing line is blurred: even the new Hyundais are dynamic and often even prettier. During the test of the new i30, which we published in the 12th issue of this year, many acquaintances agreed with my opinion that it is even more beautiful than its Korean counterpart. And there were young people among them, and not only those gray-haired like us ...

Therefore, we advise you to read the Hyundai test first. Already at the end of May, we wrote that the car is extremely convenient to use, with a comfortable chassis, excellent sound insulation and a gearbox that shifts from gear to gear like clockwork. Even then, we poured on paper everything that a beginner recalls: from love (comfort) to bad mood, because the engineers' journey to delivering pleasure during more demanding driving is still long. Fortunately, we had a 1,6-liter petrol version at the time, and this time we were pampered with a 1,6-liter turbodiesel.

Do you want to finish first? While the petrol engine was much more driver friendly as it generated less noise and had a wider range of usable rpm, the turbodiesel stood out in terms of torque (although it is necessary to “knock out” the correct rpm as if the turbocharger had a variable geometry (! ) Doesn't help, the common rail direct injection engine is pretty anemic due to the smaller displacement) and lower consumption (per inch we'd say a third lower consumption).

With a full reserve or overtaking, we complained a little about the two-liter volume, otherwise, almost half a liter less is enough for a leisurely cruise on the already too busy Slovenian roads, where “collectors” with radar are waiting at every turn. But it's still the duo of the i30 and the Kia Cee'd, a very well soundproofed car that impresses with the softness of both the steering wheel and the pedals and gearshifts. We're still a bit skeptical about the electric power steering, which offers three options: Sport, Normal, and Comfort.

The medium option is of course the best, as the Comfort function is only wise to use in the city center or in sloping parking lots, while the Sport takes you on the water. Sportiness, as we all know, is more than just a boost in steering, so both the Kia and the Hyundai owner will have to drive to the Nürburgring and consider the wishes of experienced test drivers, since an accessory called Flex Steer is not enough. . Here, the Ford Focus is still on the throne, and even the Opel Astra and the outgoing Volkswagen Golf are better. Or maybe they will fix the bug with the sports version?

Comfort is primarily provided by individually installed front and rear wheels, in front of course McPherson struts with an auxiliary frame, a rear space axle with four transverse and two longitudinal rails, a large track compared to its predecessor (front 17 mm, rear as much as 32 mm!). 45 percent better torsional strength of the body and of course more head, leg and shoulder room, and of course we end up with a wealth of gear.

You can't go wrong with the EX Maxx: it's the most complete version, offering everything from a smart key to a reversing camera, from a semi-automatic parking system to lane keeping assist... Maybe just a small comment: Hyundai has placed a rearview camera screen in the mirror , which we think is a better solution despite the more modest display, and we also think the i30's steering wheel buttons are more comfortable. Otherwise, in Cee'd we have to praise the graphics in the central part of the main indicator - they really put in the effort and it's really nice to look at.

Assuming that the new Kia Cee'd is 50 millimeters longer than its predecessor, has more space in the cabin with the same wheelbase and 40 liters larger trunk, then we believe that all this was mainly due to the large overhangs. The front is just 15 millimeters and the rear is a whopping 35 millimeters larger, which means that the standard front and rear parking sensors with a sporty bodywork are more necessary than a fancy fad. Otherwise, there is more than enough space for family trips, and when peoples move (sea, skiing), you can still count on the rooftop box.

At over 23 thousandths, the Kia Cee'd is far from the bargain price of its predecessor, but keep in mind that the novelty is indeed much better in terms of comfort, equipment and usability. However, sales data will soon show whether the previous low prices were an incentive or an obstacle.

Overall rating (339/420)

  • If we say that the outgoing Golf, as well as the newer Focus, Astra and similar-sounding names have a new serious competitor, we have not missed much. But the days of ridiculously low prices are (unfortunately) over.

  • Exterior (13/15)

Unambiguously beautifully designed car, few people prefer the i30.

  • Interior (107/140)

Rich equipment, prestigious materials (even a few leather patches on the seats and door trim), the trunk is above average and the highest comfort.

  • Engine, transmission (51

    / 40)

The engine is good enough, the gearbox is accurate, there is still work to be done on the chassis, the electric power steering with three programs did not fully convince us.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

In terms of driving performance, both the new Cee'd and the i30 are average, unless you count comfort.

  • Performance (24/35)

The measured accelerations were the same to decimal precision as the petrol i30, but the Cee'd is much more efficient in terms of flexibility.

  • Security (38/45)

With the best equipment package, you also get more passive and above all active safety, we praise the very short braking distances.

  • Economy (48/50)

Moderate consumption, average guarantee (mileage limitation, no mobile guarantee), competitive price.
