Test: Opel Adam 1.4 TWINPORT (64 kW) Jam

If cars that offered a little more personalization weren't such a hit, Adam wouldn't be. Thus, Opel has only responded to the demand for smaller cars that indulge in fashion accessories rather than space or usability.

Adam is late as the (new) Mini has already blown 12 spark plugs and even the new generation Fiat 500 is almost ready for school at the age of five. So, the models that Adam wants to communicate with are already established, and besides, they have something that Adam does not have: a story. While the 500 and Mini are icons, apart from their transformations in recent years, Adam is just one of Opel's representatives. Mr. Adam Opel is indeed the founder of today's famous car brand, but most people associate Adam's model with the alleged first man and his Evo. Whether the name is successful or not, we leave it to you, but in any case it is short, easy to remember and illustrates some kind of beginning. Although for the most part unhappy with the illegal apple.

If you start with the appearance, then without remorse it can be attributed to some Italian brand. The shape is fresh, cute, even so special that many don't recognize the Opel genes. In the test, we had a version with a white roof, delicate dark blue (for dirt and small scratches from the laundry brushes!) And white rims with 17-inch tires. The only thing we were missing was the parking sensors, as you get the basic Park Pilot parking system (rear only) for an extra €320 and Park Pilot front and rear for €580. As for outdoor lighting with LED technology, you will need to check out the best equipment (Jam is the second worst, Glam and Slam are also better equipped) or pay an additional 300 euros. Glam only has LEDs on the front, Slam also on the back, and the base Adam (for €11.400) is more than completely bare in terms of hardware.

However, upon entering the salon, to be honest, I was shocked at first. There were so many different bright colors in the pile for a man who at the time just wanted to drive safely out of the office garage. The bright red dashboard lights, green drawer lights on both front doors, and the stars on the roof are more suited for a Friday night on the way to a raver party than a drive home from work. Even my children of six and eight years old soon grew tired of the bright colors. It was too much. With two buttons above our head, we reduced the light intensity and harmonized the interior, leaving the starry sky in the form of 64 LEDs. It was better then. We are also interested in how the printed motifs of clouds, autumn leaves or a checkerboard, which you can think of over your head, look like.

After the first impact, we immediately found that there is quite a lot of space in the front seats, but in the back seat and in the trunk it ends. While two adults can usually sit in the front, the rear bench is only suitable for two children, and those two will have the back of one of the front seats in front of their noses. The trunk, accessed by a light touch on the Opel badge, is expected to have room for only two travel bags or three large shopping bags. Given that the Mini has a 160-litre trunk and the Fiat 500 has a 185-litre boot, the 170-litre Adam sits in the middle. While the base boot can be extended with a semi-split rear bench, don't expect miracles.

With a length of 3,7 meters, Adam is closer to the Agila than to the four-meter Corsa, so the size is not entirely his advantage. In our test unit, however, we liked the three-tone interior (charcoal gray on top, legacy navy blue on the outside, and white on the bottom), which broke the monotony and increased the feeling of spaciousness. Unfortunately, the details painted in snow-white color get dirty immediately, so they are really suitable only for adult ladies, who even in winter are more charming than shopping in shopping centers. Of course, there are no children. The workmanship is good and the choice of materials was obviously pretty close to the top of the list of requirements as they are carefully selected.

From white leather on the steering wheel, seats, interior doors and handbrake lever to plastic that is not protected even in more prestigious cars. Even the touchscreen with attached volume keys and the transition to the base ("house"), on which you can fondle more than press, give that touch of glamor inherent in such a car. Well, we also got a typical (factory) error in the car settings, which is not exactly an honor for Opel or its supplier. The equipment corresponds to the price of the test car for the first power (basic air conditioning, cruise control, speed limiter, hands-free system, radio with USB connection and keys on the steering wheel, four airbags, two airbags, ESP stabilization system ...), although with active safety, almost 16 thousand wanted additional assistance systems.

When we finish the chapter on fashion in cars, we come to a technique in which Adam does not shine. While on the track you have the feeling that Adam, like the Mini, is firmly on the ground, he starts bouncing on our perforated highways. For a very long time, sportiness wasn't just about stiff springs and shock absorbers, so bouncing from hole to hole becomes quite tedious. Then there is the steering system, which, on the one hand, says too little about what is happening under the front wheels, and on the other hand, resolutely withstands too much vibration that the driver does not want to feel. And when we add to that the gearbox, which on a cold morning didn't want to hear about first gear a few times until it warmed up (or the driver was rougher than you want), we can only figure out in elementary school: Opel, sit down, three.

You know better, and we are sure that the more dynamic version will definitely get better in the future. In the test, we had a 1,4-liter engine, but with 64 kilowatts (or more than the domestic 87 "horsepower") it was only an average option between the 1,2-liter (51 kW / 70 "horsepower") and 1,4. 74 liter brother. (100/5,3). The engine is a gray mouse: neither loud, nor too strong, nor too weak, nor too thirsty. On a normal lap, where we drove very calmly at the speed limit, it consumed only 100 liters per 5,8 kilometers in the city, and together with the highway and the highway, the average figure rose to 130 liters. The difference between city and highway driving can also be explained by the very short gear ratios of the single five-speed manual transmission. In the city (or under load, when the car is full of passengers and luggage) this is good, on the highway it makes too much noise. The engine spins up at 4.000 km/h at XNUMX rpm, which is closer to the red field than at idle. Missed sixth gear...

The automatic start-stop mark was beautifully hidden in the tachometer, and on the otherwise transparent dashboard, some, in our opinion, important marks (ESP operation or cruise control) were only modestly assigned. I doubt the old drivers will see them at all. Thus, we can praise the basic ergonomics of the driver's cab, and looking at the trip computer data, we asked ourselves again if it would not be better to get other data using a button on the top of the steering wheel and delete the data with a button in the middle of the same lever. Now the opposite is true.

The City program comes in handy when the servo helps us with maneuvering in crowded parking spaces and the ECO function helps us with fuel consumption, although you will do better if you switch fast enough, accelerate gently and drive without air conditioning, even on moderately warm days. ...

If you are interested in Adam, we advise you to first write down what you want from the car or what (additional) equipment you want to have. When you open the list of possible equipment, you will soon be lost in five finely printed pages. That is why you in no way accuse society of falling into fashionable euphoria. We are a company.

Overall rating (273/420)

  • The base, especially the shape and feel of the cabin, is good for a more agile engine and better (six-speed) transmission. If they also optimize the chassis and improve the steering system, Adam will be a real little foe of the 500 or Mini.

  • Exterior (12/15)

Definitely an interesting car, which can also be attributed to Italian roots.

  • Interior (86/140)

It cannot boast of roominess, but the salon is well equipped with equipment and excellent materials.

  • Engine, transmission (45

    / 40)

There are still many opportunities for technology. Read: lacking a more powerful engine, faster (six-speed) transmission, more responsive steering ...

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

Just a stiffer chassis does not mean a good position on the road, pleasant braking feel.

  • Performance (18/35)

Well, performance is more for women than for dynamic toddlers.

  • Security (23/45)

The number of airbags and the ESP system give a good assessment of passive safety, and in active Adam is more than barefoot.

  • Economy (33/50)

Just two years of general and mobile warranty, slightly more than the loss of value when selling a used car.
