Test: Renault Grand Scenic dCi 160 EDC Bose Energy

We are accustomed to the stories that Renault is successfully struggling with success in a certain car segment with some models, and then experiencing disappointment in the next generations. In the case of the Scenic, this decline has not yet been as evident as with some of its own models, but the competition has nevertheless seriously affected the class of cars once called "Scenic is like that ...". Has the new Scenic returned to its former glory?

One thing is for sure: both in the photo and in real life, the car looks elegant, sophisticated, harmonious, in short, it looks like Renault's man in bright sneakers, Laurens van den Acker, has done an excellent job. The new Scenic has grown too. In particular, the Grand Scenic, the larger in the family, presented to us for testing, is six inches longer and two inches wider than its predecessor. To maintain the correct proportions of the design, the new Scenic was fitted with full 20-inch wheels, which even a Lamborghini Huracan would not be ashamed of. It is understood that the tire width is much narrower and Renault also promises that maintenance costs will not increase as a result, as they have reached an agreement with tire manufacturers on a tire price that should be comparable to 16 or 17 inches. -inch wheels.

Due to the huge glass surfaces and the roof window, the cabin looks quite spacious and airy. The light gray leather on the seats also contributes to the feeling of freshness, but is a lot of hassle when cleaning. In the test model, at just five thousand kilometers, the seats were already showing signs of wear. Otherwise, sitting on the power seats and massage is quite comfortable and tireless. The driver's working environment is familiar to us from the updated Renault models of the latest generation. Fully digitized, skinable counters and a redesigned center console with buttons that now houses the new R-Link multitasking system. It has successfully taken control of most of the tasks that once required scattered buttons on the console, but this is not a perfect set of solutions. For example, we missed out on simple shortcuts for some of the most useful tasks (navigation, phone, radio) next to the screen, and instead there are a few rather minor buttons. Even the fact that you have to press a button countless times to adjust the radio volume could be elegantly addressed with a simple, old-fashioned but still better rotary knob. We also cannot be impressed with the system as it is quite slow, each command requires a short (currently completely unnecessary) moment, and the TomTom-enabled navigation system is graphically destructive and sometimes completely confusing.

More optimism is inspired by some of the custom solutions inside. We can say that the interior is suitable for pharmacies, as the Grand Scenic has up to 63 liters of usable storage space. The most useful are a drawer in the center console, a huge drawer in front of the passenger, and four drawers hidden in the underbody of the car.

In a car of this type, as well as the well-being of the driver, the well-being of the rear passengers is important. And in the Grand version, there may be five more behind your back. According to the new Scenic, the rear bench divides (and moves longitudinally) in a 60:40 ratio, with two more seats tucked away in the lower section of the trunk. It can be raised and lowered by pressing a button in the trunk. Elegant and completely unpretentious. You will have more problems getting into the third row, but in any case it will be a task for children, because it will be difficult for you to push adults there. Surprisingly, there is not enough space for the elderly in the second row. Or at least not for the knees. If the average driver is behind the wheel, the longitudinal distance in the second row will be about 700 millimeters, which is clearly too small for a car in this segment. And given that the edge of the plastic table on the back of the seat is attached so that the edge rests on the knees, it is not at all comfortable to sit. We expected the Grand version to still have a little more space in the second row, but apparently they left all dimensions in the first two rows the same as in the regular Scenic and rewarded the trunk with inches. With 718 liters of luggage, it's above average, large and roomy, but we'll still trade 100 liters for a more decent second-row seat.

In the section on technological solutions, we will once again praise the Renault card or the key for hands-free communication and starting the car. It's amazing how none of the competitors “stole” such an efficient and well-functioning system. Let's blame him for being too "attached" to the proximity of the car, as it locks up when we circle around the car to open the door for the child from the other side. Otherwise, the new Grand Scenic is well-equipped with all the safety support systems such as a pedestrian detection system, a rearview camera, a lane departure reminder, a color projection screen, a traffic sign recognition system, and radar cruise control. The latter can be said to be mostly a great tool for making the driver's job easier, but it has some drawbacks in Scenic. Besides the fact that it operates at a speed of only 50 kilometers per hour and is practically useless in the city (it does not stop or goes below 40 kilometers per hour), it has many problems with traffic on the motorway. Let's say he is too slow in detecting the speed of the vehicle in front after we have changed lanes. The first reaction is always braking, and only after we understand that the car in front of us is moving away does it begin to accelerate. He also has problems with trucks that end up in bends in the adjacent lane as he identifies them as an obstacle and starts to brake.

However, it is difficult to find indignation at the excellent combination of a 1,6 "horsepower" 160-liter turbodiesel coupled with a robotic dual-clutch transmission. And although the Grand Scenic offers a choice of driving profiles, including dynamic ones, such a car is best suited to a comfortable one. Surprisingly, given the size of the rims, the ride is also heavily focused on comfort. The long wheelbase pleasantly "polishes" the unevenness of the road, and thanks to the wheels on the outer edges of the body and the precise steering mechanism, the handling is quite good. The soundproofing of the cabin is also good, so gusts of wind, noise from under the wheels and engine noise penetrate into the cabin with difficulty. Even fuel consumption remained at a decent level on these cold days: it consumed only 5,4 liters on our usual circle, which is quite impressive for a car of this size.

Renault's decision to stylistically redesign the brand, to which the new Scenic has successfully ceded, is certainly to be applauded. Also commendable are the many custom solutions developed by engineers who really think in favor of the users of such a vehicle. It's a little less clear, however, where the 23 extra inches that separate the Grand from the regular Scenic have gone. Maybe it would still make sense if Renault offered the mini Espace instead of the Grand Scenic?

evaluation

  • While the structural design of the interior is somewhat flawed, it is such a grand stage design.

still a very useful machine. You definitely won't succeed with this drivetrain combination.

missed, and when it comes to gear, try to avoid light skin inside
