Grille test: Subaru Impreza XV 1.6i Style

Subaru fans get soft knees from the permanent all-wheel drive, which the Japanese call symmetrical because of the equal distances, and the boxer engine, in which the pistons perform their function left-right, rather than up-and-down, as is usually the case with other cars. The XV has it all, so in the company of other Subaru models, it's not all that special in terms of technology.

But compared to the Forester, the Legacy and Outback XV have a much more unusual design, one might even say pretty. At the presentation, we were taught to see young people inside who are not alien to an active lifestyle. Maybe that's why they offer bright and unusual color combinations, tinted rear windows and large, as much as 17-inch wheels?

Probably because it is best to start with a mountain bike on a deserted mountain road, where a car is waiting for us, and then it's good that uninvited people can't see the back of the car. All-wheel drive with gearbox in rainy weather will definitely come in handy, as will the car's lower bottom to prevent the car from getting stuck in the first off-road test. The Yokohama Geolander tires are of course a compromise and are therefore useful on both gravel (mud) and tarmac, although they also make the chassis less responsive to everyday (tarmac) surfaces.

The driving position is, in principle, strange. He sits relatively high, but very even, since he is among my XV among the record holders for longitudinal steering. Seven airbags create a sense of security, leather on the steering wheel and gear lever and heated seats add a touch of prestige, and cruise control and two-way automatic air conditioning are already staples in this class of car. There is ample room in both the front and rear seats, where we also have to compliment the Isofix's easily accessible mounts, and we haven't lost sight of the useful basement space in the boot. Beneath the base, there is a beautifully designed tool space and a small storage space for small items.

The 1,6-liter petrol engine proved to be a weak point. In principle, there is nothing wrong with this, but the XV is already such a big car and still has permanent four-wheel drive that the engine, apart from leisurely wandering around the city, is not the most refined either on the track or endowed with sufficient off-road torque. At a speed of 130 kilometers per hour, the tachometer already shows 3.600 rpm, and next to the engine, neither the tires nor the wind swirling around the angular body are not the quietest. In off-road conditions, there is not enough torque, and the 1,6-liter naturally aspirated engine with the gearbox engaged has difficulty climbing the hill. That's why the real Subaru comes to life only with a turbocharger, and the thickness of your wallet depends on whether we are talking about a turbodiesel or an STi model. In the city, alert drivers are bothered by loud engine starts, as the XV boasts of shutting down at short stops.

In addition to the low-powered engine and only a five-speed gearbox, the Subaru XV has a first-class all-wheel drive with a downshift and an interesting exterior. For a special status on the street, such cars are quite enough.
