Test: Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i X-Play

Loving the new Aygo is different than loving the GT86. Here you fall in love with the engine, transmission, chassis and rear-wheel drive, and the kid had to play on different strings, which is called form. Therefore, it is not surprising that he attracts more attention from the fairer sex, especially fragile girls.

Forgive me for not being fragile, much less a girl. So as a typical GT86 buyer (did I mention rear-wheel drive?) I can only convey words of admiration from friends, acquaintances and even relatives. The tricolor body is clearly appealing to its fullest, the X at the front of the car, and the optional rear doors that go into the C-pillar add to the ease of use. It's beautiful, it was a general assessment, but when I showed the camera to help with parking, some of them missed the coveted “wow”.

But the curiosity of women is immeasurable, and so we also came up with less pleasing features of the new Toyota. One found that the sound was too metallic when closing the door, while another was horrified that he needed a regular spare wheel because he did not trust the inflatable device. The familiar from the design praised the overall impression of the dashboard (white plastic accessories!), But was horrified to find that the tachometer and indicator lights to the left and right of the large speedometer, which also offers data from the on-board computer) was a clear rush.

Together, we found the front seats, with their backrest and cushion in one piece, almost sporty, and behind the wheel, despite the lack of longitudinal movement, very comfortable. There was also laughter from the single windshield wiper, which closely resembled the one on the buses - and it was just as effective! We're also bringing up a thumb touchscreen that also provides connectivity to your mobile phone.

In a future issue, we will publish another comparative test of the latest toddlers, and this time we will only show that Toyota was among the smallest, if not the smallest. It already has the least amount of space in the front seats, and the rear passengers will already be quite cramped. Also, the 168-liter trunk is not among the largest, but the Aygo is very playful in town. If it were even more transparent, you might not even need a rear view camera ...

It is clear, however, that Toyota planners believe that city cars never hit the highways, as the Aygo only had a speed limiter and not cruise control. In the comparative test, this fact also caused some laughter, as well as the discovery that the interlocutors asked me if I was on the bike during the speakerphone call. The culprit for this was air conditioning or air circulation, therefore, before calling, you must give the first level so that the interlocutors can hear you normally.

The liter three-cylinder engine evokes mixed feelings. On the one hand, this is very economical, since we used only 4,8 liters of gasoline on our standard lap with moderate driving with speed limits, and on the other hand, seven liters of average consumption in the test is clearly too much. Maybe he knows that he is not the most muscular, so he has to work hard if he wants to keep track of the dynamic flows of Slovenian transport. We were also worried about the noise when starting off or full acceleration, because then Aygo explains out loud to all passengers that he has only three pistons, and with moderate driving this noise miraculously disappears. The good side of the mechanics is that there is enough torque even at low revs, so the engine does not need to be driven higher. Besides the fact that there are only five gears in the gearbox, we have nothing to complain about, it is accurate and of high quality.

If it's true that young women will open their wallets to (paint) the car at will, then Toyota has nothing to fear since it hit the mark with Aygo. Admittedly, subcompact cars in Slovenia are not the most successful in terms of sales, but Toyota, along with a group of similar ones (read: twins Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107), could promise a good piece of the pie.

Overall rating (302/420)

  • The smallest Toyota has some trade-offs in terms of roominess and engine (consumption), so you won't be lacking in quality workmanship and maneuverability in urban environments. And it's beautiful, the girls say.

  • Exterior (14/15)

Definitely different from the competition, but probably she will like it more than him.

  • Interior (78/140)

The interior is more modest in volume, the dashboard is nice (except for the unfinished sensors), the trunk is among the smallest, there are no comments on the accuracy of the design.

  • Engine, transmission (51

    / 40)

The engine is sometimes too loud, and the chassis and transmission are suitable for the vehicle.

  • Driving performance (55

    / 95)

The position on the road belongs to the golden mean, a little worse than the feeling when braking, so the car is practically insensitive to crosswinds.

  • Performance (23/35)

You can't brag about acceleration and maneuverability, the maximum speed is at the level of competitors.

  • Security (33/45)

In the EuroNCAP test Aygo got 4 stars, it had a speed limiter and we missed the cruise control.

  • Economy (48/50)

Fuel consumption can fluctuate greatly, competitive price and comparable warranty.
