Test: Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI (176 kW) 4MOTION DSG Highline

You'll look like you're lying in... (well, you know where), but you'll actually be the one to win the most! The Volkswagen Passat is the best-selling company car in its class in Europe and there is no indication that it will change in the future.

Statistics say they buy a new Passat every 29 seconds, that's 3.000 a day and 22 million so far. Many of these vehicles fall on the shoulders of companies, but this only reinforces the claim that the Passat is known as a reliable product and a safe means of transportation. According to the new product, we can also credit it with the highest degree of driving pleasure, so we are confident that it will also turn into many home garages. First of all, let's say that the comments that only the headlights and color were changed, a "chrome" strip and a more economical engine were added.

The new Passat is really new, although we have already seen some technical solutions. The eighth generation, first shown back in 1973, is much sharper, with more aggressive headlights and more aggressive movements. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design at Volkswagen, and his colleagues have taken advantage of the MQB's flexible platform, so that despite being almost the same length, the new model is lower (1,4 cm) and wider (1,2 cm). The engines could be placed lower, so the hood, along with the front of the car, became more aggressive, and the passenger compartment more rearward. While you don't need a new garage for the new Passat (we think that's a good thing, as cars are growing faster than parking spaces and European roads), the 7,9cm longer wheelbase has given both front and rear seat passengers an advantage. . majority. The answer lies in the smaller wheel overhangs, since the tires are located much more on the edges of the body, which also has a positive effect on driving dynamics.

Throw in state-of-the-art LED lighting and twin trapezoidal tailpipes and count how many heads have been turned by passers-by. Everything is close to Volkswagen dealerships, there are a lot of gas stations, only a few places in the city center. The design of the Volkswagen Passat still falls short of the old Alfa 159. But the Passat has a trump card that Alfa (and many other competitors) have never had: the ergonomics of the driver's seat. Every button or switch is exactly where you'd expect it to be, everything works perfectly, and so the driver's workplace is more of a place to relax than forced labor. Maybe that's why it's as desirable as a company car?

Jokes aside, the intuitive center touchscreen, feel your fingers approaching, connecting to your smartphone allows you to listen to your favorite songs without CDs or USB sticks, you can even charge your phone at the same time! The interactive dashboard is equipped with digital gauges with excellent graphics (for 508 euros and only in conjunction with Discover PRO! Navigation), navigation provides more display options with a resolution of 1.440 x 540 pixels, and of course you can also call up navigation or driving data ... between digital speedometers and engine speed. The downside of these innovations is that they allow for more displays than the driver's eye can detect, and the good ones are their flexibility (five presets) and unobtrusiveness.

The Passat can have a completely classic gauge shape with no additional information to bother the driver, and furthermore, the electronics don't beep and warn every five minutes to get the driver's attention. Yes, the Passat is a very pleasant car that draws attention very discreetly even to the unfastened seat belt. Interestingly, the novice does not allow driving position, which brought a smile to many casual observers: we called it driverless driving. Namely, some managed to lower the seat and pull out the steering wheel in such a way that they became invisible to other drivers or pedestrians. It is still unclear to us how they saw something on the road, but apparently the engineers made sure that the “low riders” (those who like to ride their buttocks on asphalt) will no longer have this joy.

In the eighth generation Passat, the front seats no longer fit the chassis, and the steering wheel is no longer adjustable in length to make basketball players feel at home. However, rear-seat passengers, especially the shoulders and head, have been given more room to move, and it's impossible not to notice the 21-litre boot increase (previously 565, now 586 litres) despite the four wheels. drive! This fifth-generation Haldex clutch isn't quite a Dakar, but you'll no doubt be hitting a popular ski resort. Basically only the front wheels are driven, and the rear wheels are woken up by an electro-hydraulic oil pump, so to speak, before they slip (modern sensors!).

The test car also had the standard XDS +, which brakes the inner wheels in corners with ESC, which also makes the Passat lighter and better when cornering. In short: it functions as a partial differential lock, but in reality it is not. We have already mentioned auxiliary systems. In addition to the digital instrument cluster (called the Active Info Display) with excellent graphics (five preset options allow displaying classic gauges, then additional display of consumption and range, fuel economy, navigation and auxiliary systems) and a large central display. was a Passat with the best Highline equipment out of three, fitted as standard with Front Assist traffic control with city emergency braking, keyless start, intelligent cruise control and also had a smart key to unlock or lock the car ( € 504)), Discover Pro Navigation Radio (€ 1.718), Car Net Connection (€ 77,30), Assistance Package Plus (which includes Pedestrian Detection, Side Assist Plus, Hold Assist Lane Assist lanes, automatic high beam Dynamic Light Assist and traffic jam assistance, € 1.362), a reversing camera, only € nine?) and LED outdoor lighting technology (€ 561).

And let's not forget the Rear Trafic Alert (blind spot assistance when reversing) and the Think Blue Trainer (which helps reduce fuel consumption by tipping points when collecting points). Therefore, do not be surprised if the base price of the car is 38.553 € 7.800 due to the rich set of accessories, which is higher than the price of a new car in the lower price range, which is 20 €. But you can trust us, you may not need all the hardware, but it works great. Only in the rich instructions for use should you first bury and thoroughly study. The test Passat had only one drawback in our test: the brakes squeak in the first meters of the ride, and even then only when reversing. Every time I drove backwards onto the main road, heading to work in front of the house, the brakes squeaked horribly, and after XNUMX meters, in the same maneuver, the nausea miraculously disappeared. However, this never happened in the direction of travel! If it were not for this every day, and it is quite obvious, I would not even mention it ...

Despite turbodiesel technology, direct fuel injection, a stop-start system, and the ability to "float" at low throttle (when the engine is idling), the engine isn't quite the epitome of economy, but it's a real gem in terms of jumping. If a few years ago it was perfectly normal for turbodiesel engines with a TDI of about two liters to have an output of about 110 "horsepower", and the most powerful one had 130 horsepower, then this was largely the prerogative of processors. Remember, 200 "horses" is already a serious bite! Now the standard (!) Engine has 240 “horsepower” and as much as 500 Newton meters of maximum torque! Are you surprised then that the standard all-wheel drive has 4Motion and a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission? Look at our measurements, no thoroughbred sports car would shy away from such accelerations, and the Passat also performed very well under braking (with winter tires!).

Probably, losing weight also has some merit in this, since the new Passat is lighter than the old one (some versions are even 85 kilograms). If you check this combination, the 240hp TDI with 4Motion and DSG technology won't go wrong. Let's put our hand on the fire! The stop-start system works perfectly, starting the engine does not even bother passengers as much as before, which can be attributed to new technologies and better sound insulation (including laminated safety glass), lighting of blind spots outside. the mirrors may be smaller, in manual mode (if you use the gear lever instead of the steering wheel switches) it doesn't look like a racing Polo WRC, so Ogier and Latvala might not feel at home in this car.

The ISOFIX mounts, on the other hand, can be a model, the excellent active headlights with LED technology, and the discreet ambient lighting and seats in the leather and Alcantara combination can be addictive. Yes, living in this car is very pleasant. Excellent technology and a large number of assistance systems usually means a higher price. So we could break this record in terms of a supercar, but also more expensive than its predecessor, but we won't. Because it isn't! The weaker versions have kept a very similar price despite new technology, and the more expensive versions (like the test car) are even cheaper than their comparable predecessor. So don't roll your eyes if your boss offers you a new Passat. Maybe you will drive even better than him, even if he has a bigger limousine for several people.
