Test: Volkswagen Polo Beats 1.0 TSI DSG

If the car grows by as much as eight centimeters, it certainly means a lot, and experienced engineers have used the increase in length to make the Polo much more spacious than it has been until now. Looks like he got into the upper class. To golf? Of course not, but the Polo will certainly appeal to those who have argued that it is not spacious enough. Does growing up and growing up mean? They seem to have made an effort at VW and the new Polo really does feel a lot more mature than it has so far. This is ensured by a number of modern accessories, which until recently were absent for cars of the Polo class. The Polo (Volkswagen has been selling middle-class cars under this name since 1975) now offers a lot, although in many ways it continues the tradition of most manufacturers: you can get more equipment for more money. Our test Polo arrived with Beats hardware, which is a sort of accessory version of the sixth-generation launch. Beats is a complete set of the same level as the Comfortline, that is, the second in the current offer. It is assumed that it is he who offers a number of accessories that work more freshly. A thin longitudinal line that crosses the hood and roof is an external distinguishing feature, while the interior has been refreshed with the orange color of some parts of the dashboard. Some people like it and even claim that it has added to the attractiveness of the feminine taste.

The design of the new Polo retains all the adjectives of Volkswagen's design approach. With simple strokes, they created a new gender image. In many ways, it resembles their larger Golf, but cannot deny its "kinship" with even larger ones. It is understandable, since the goal was such that the eye immediately conveys: this is Volkswagen.

Similarly, you can find out about the interior. Definitely, the new large touchscreen stands out the most on the dashboard. It is at a suitable height, at the level of meters. Now they can be digital in the Polo (which will increase the price by another 341 euros), but they remain "classic". In fact, the "more modern" ones would only take care of the more modern look, because in terms of message functions, they kept up with the Polo we tested. The center aperture can also convey enough detail, and buttons on the steering wheel let you scroll through information. This is where the rest of the function control buttons reside, as almost everything else is now handled via touch menus on the center screen. In fact, not quite all. Volkswagen also has two rotary knobs on each side of the screen. "Analog technology" also includes all of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls (under the slightly low center vents), and there are several buttons next to the gear lever to select a driving profile or enable automatic parking. mode (which works quite simply).

Beats means two more – sports comfort seats and the Beats audio system. The latter costs 432 euros as an accessory for other levels of equipment, but for the good operation of the device it was supposed to add an optional Composition Media radio station (plus 235 euros), and for the efficient operation of the smartphone, an add-on. for hands-free calls and App-Connect just under 280 euros). There were even more electronic gadgets - the most important was active cruise control with automatic adjustment of the distance to the car in front. Since we were also able to use an automatic transmission (dual clutch), the Polo was a really good carrier in which the driver could at least temporarily transfer some functions to the car.

We also have to mention the comfort of the sporty comfort seats, which softened up a bit on the rather stiff chassis (in Beats with big wheels) and with this choice there is a lot of unused space under the boot because we can “put bigger wheels in it (if we do it right). we understand) the impossibility of choosing such a replacement wheel among the price list items).

When it comes to driving comfort and performance, the Polo has been a commendably reliable and comfortable car so far. The road position is solid, the same goes for driving stability in all conditions, and the car's stopping distance is a little disappointing. In fact, it is similar in engine performance and economy. While the Polo seems to offer a satisfying driving experience in just about any situation - with a rather small (but powerful) three-cylinder engine and a fast-acting seven-speed automatic transmission (and additional under-steer-wheel manual shift levers), consumption has been calculated. fuel, which turned out to be surprisingly high. It is true that we got an almost completely new car (perhaps with an uncharged engine), but we also provided more than we expected (and more than Ibiza spent with the same engine) on a normal lap, i.e. in very moderate driving. ., and a six-speed manual transmission).

What's new about the Polo compared to the Seat Ibiza's sister? The kinship is now even more obvious than it was in the previous generation, partly in the passenger compartment and, above all, of course, in the engine equipment. But outwardly they are completely different, and the same can be said about the overall impression of what he offers. Of course, we can also expect the Polo to retain more value at a used price, for which the brand is of course an important reason. When comparing prices to Ibiza, Slovenian shoppers at Polo are much better than those who buy in any other market. In fact, the differences are not great, especially when comparing cars with richer and more optional equipment (in many other places the Polo is also more expensive than Ibiza).

From what it offers, it will easily continue its relatively good sales success so far (over 28.000 units have been sold in Slovenia so far), although it is true that at least the undersigned seems that even with the new With the Polo generation, the wide female crowd (as promised in the Wolfsburg brand) will not be the most convincing. At least in terms of appearance, it lacks a suitable "sexy" shape. This one remains pretty calm and is the first messenger that the Polo continues to be inspired by German rationality.

Overall rating (348/420)

  • Polo grew up to be a real golf two decades ago. This, of course, makes it a suitable vehicle for family use.

  • Exterior (13/15)

    Typical Volkswagen "shapelessness".

  • Interior (105/140)

Modern and pleasant materials, good space in all seats, excellent ergonomics, solid infotainment system.

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

A sufficiently powerful automatic transmission with a dual clutch works much better than previous generations, a fairly accurate steering gear.

  • Driving performance (60

    / 95)

Satisfactory road position, slightly stiff ("sporty") suspension, good handling, braking efficiency and stability.

  • Performance (29/35)

The engine bounces adequately due to its light weight and excellent performance.

  • Security (40/45)

Exemplary safety, standard crash braking, numerous assistance systems.

  • Economy (48/50)

Slightly high fuel consumption, the price of the base model is solid, and with the help of many accessories we can quickly "fix" it. Definitely one of the best when it comes to maintaining value.
