Tomos Hip Hop 45 in Tori Master 50

Who does not know the legendary two-, three- and four-speed cars from Koper, which transported half of Yugoslavia? Or the masterpieces of ToRi's construction (imagined by Tony Riefel) with Tomos units and miniature external dimensions? Yes, these were the cars we drove and learned the basics of mechanics as a teenager, we looked for two similar kids and checked which one was better in 2009.

Hip-hop is a moped designed to deliver mail that is easy to spot because of the color, if not the other. Sturdy tubular construction and a trunk at the front (hence the unusual lighting setup) and at the rear require suitcases or bags full of freshly printed automotive magazines. The transmission is a mixture of an ancient gearbox (known from the APN series) and a slightly newer but still old thermal unit known from Colibri models and newer automatics.

The suspension is very firm and doesn't groan under full load - we tested it with three passengers, and Matjaz, who was tormented for two weeks driving around the edges of Ljubljana, claims it's indestructible. The bright sides of the Tomos are also a very good disc brake, side and center stand, lock box and spark motor, and we have to blame the desperate transmission (inaccurate, weak, idling between all gears), weight and (we assume this is due to single installation of the front fork) the worst directional stability.

Thorium was drawn by a Slovene and is made in Taiwan. It is driven by a four-stroke unit with a gearbox, which requires getting used to and attention from the driver. To shift up, the lever must be reset down and vice versa - when shifting down, the lever must be moved up, and the idle is fully in the up position. The first kilometers are tricky with the semi-automatic clutch, as there is no clutch lever, but we start by simply shifting into first gear and adding gas.

Since our limb control center is used to depressing the clutch before shifting, placing the brake lever on the left side (i.e. where the clutch would normally be) is unfavorable in terms of force. Fortunately, there are no pair of drum brakes, who knows how strong, so it is not dangerous to squeeze the brake instead of the clutch. A funny and rather unnecessary detail are the lights that show the current gear - they are still hard to see.

Unlike Tomos, a 50 cubic meter grinder. The CM hums in four-stroke mode, so only unleaded petrol should be filled in the fuel tank, and the Tomos has to be played with by adding two percent oil. Tori is more frugal: he ate 2 liters per hundred kilometers, and Tomos had three more children. The advantage of the Koper product is that the box is smaller and the finish is better (some parts from Tori are really cheap), but in the test it did not go smoothly - the speedometer braid was torn. It just so happened - we got used to it from the junior school years. .

We put the Hip-Hop Tomos in the first place not out of considerations of local patriotism (“made in Koper”), but simply because it is generally better designed and made, albeit with some “mistakes”. First of all, it's important to know that for the same money it takes for these two mopeds, you can get a reliable 50cc scooter today. See If Hip Hop and Master were compared to the four scooters tested in Auto Magazine's 20th issue, it would most likely end up at the end of the scale, but. ... However, there are advantages to a moped: every garage foreman knows how to repair it, and after you turn it into a graben, a hammer and a brush are enough to help you with the paint left over from "shading" the fence.
