Consumables for Toyota RAV4 require replacement every 40-80 thousand km. Many owners prefer to do the work without going to a car service. You can install a fuel filter on RAV 4 yourself, following a few rules.

Where is the fuel filter

The location of the protective element on the petrol and diesel versions of the crossover is slightly different. The easiest way to find a node is for owners of the first generation Toyota RAV4 (SXA10), which was produced before 2000. The filter is located in the engine compartment and there are no problems with access to it. Starting from the second generation (CA20W, CA30W and XA40), the part was moved to the fuel tank, which greatly complicates the replacement work both in service centers and in garage conditions.

It is easier to deal with diesel equipment - fuel filters on models of all generations are installed in the engine compartment. Another characteristic feature of heavy fuel variants is the interchangeability of components. On a 2017 model year machine, you can install the 2011 or 2012 assembly option. This may be due to the identical dimensions of the filter housings and connection connectors.

It is recommended to use only original Japanese spare parts. Unlike analogues with a minimum cost, assembled under license from Toyota, factory options are more durable.

Any version of the RAV 4 is equipped with two types of filtration systems:

• rough cleaning - a mesh that prevents the penetration of large debris into the fuel line;
• fine cleaning: captures fine particles such as dust and rust, as well as water and foreign matter.

The first element is rarely replaced due to design features. Flushing is done with clean gasoline or special chemicals to maintain working conditions. The fine cleaning part receives a lot of stress throughout its entire service life, so it is customary to replace it completely. Otherwise, a significant reduction in engine power or a complete failure of individual components is possible.

The selection of a 4 RAV 2008 gasoline fuel filter, as well as other third-generation variations, requires caution. It is recommended to pay attention to the points:

• 77024-42060 - for models up to 2006 onwards;
• 77024-42061 — 2006-2008;
• 77024-42080 — 2008-2012

When to change the fuel filter for RAV 4

The manufacturer recommends replacing the component after 80 thousand km. In practice, such repairs have to be carried out much more often. The reason is poor-quality fuel at gas stations and the independent use by RAV4 owners of various additives added to the gas tank. In such conditions, it is better to carry out manipulations after 40 thousand km.

It is possible to do such work more often, but two factors prevent this:

• original spare parts are not cheap and sometimes they have to be ordered from abroad;
• replacing the RAV 4 fuel filter of the 3rd generation, as well as later ones, is a difficult and time-consuming job.

Along with this, it is recommended to undergo scheduled technical inspections of the machine.

It is possible that the part due to low-quality gasoline or diesel will become unusable long before the indicated mark.

Replacement frequency

Maintenance of the fuel system should be organized every 40 thousand km. At the same time, troublesome disassembly makes it difficult to independently check the wear of components, so it is better to stick to a certain frequency. Exceptions are 2002-2004 models and diesel variants.

Replacement procedure

The correct replacement of the Toyota RAV 4 2014 fuel filter is carried out on a dismantled gas tank. Access to the working area from the cab is present only in the second and third generation (including restyled versions from 2010). Before removing the necessary parts and changing the filtration system, it is necessary to carry out a minimum set of preparatory work. This includes securing the machine to a lift or viewing platform, as well as disconnecting the battery.

It is necessary to resort to such works:

• Remove the rear part of the exhaust system and, on all-wheel drive versions, additionally unscrew the driveshaft.
• Disconnect the fuel hoses and insulate them during operation to protect them from dust.
• We unscrew the bolts that hold the gas tank and disconnect the power terminals from the fuel pump.
• Carry out a complete disassembly of the tank with further placement in a clean and convenient place to continue work.
• Remove the fuel pump cover, as well as the fasteners securing the assembly to the gas tank body.
• Remove the replacement fine filter and install a new one.
• Assemble all assemblies and components in reverse order.

It is recommended to carry out operations with a small amount of gasoline. Replacing the fuel filter with Toyota RAV 4 2007 and other representatives of the third generation will be possible without complex disassembly of components.

Replacing the RAV4 fuel filter without removing the gas tank

The part to be replaced is located in a hard-to-reach place, access to which is impossible without a sharp intervention in the body panel. If for some reason it is not possible to remove the fuel tank, you will have to resort to brute force. First you need to find the area under which the necessary nodes are hidden. To do this, you can refer to the full technical documentation or specialists at the service station. By the way, most often on 2014-2015 models, the components located under the left rear seat are changed.

To do this, you must completely remove the rear seats, standard trim and soundproofing. After that, you need to carefully mark the cut points by drilling several holes. Next, metal cutting, which can be fixed using the Cricket drill bit or a special tool. After the hatching is formed, you can begin to manipulate the filter.

Once all parts have been replaced and the engine is running normally, the hole in the floor can be closed. It is not recommended to use welding for blind closing of such a hatch, since after a certain mileage the filter will have to be replaced again. The optimal solution is sealants with anti-corrosion substances.

However, some car owners were more fortunate: Replacing the fuel filter with Toyota RAV 4 2008 and newer (until 2013) is simplified due to the presence of a service hatch in the body floor. To access it, you need to:

• completely disassemble the rear row of seats;
• remove part of the floor covering;
• carefully remove the hatch cover (the sealant holds it tightly).

The remaining repair actions are no different from those discussed above. After completing the main work on replacing the fuel filter with RAV 4 2007, it is recommended to get rid of the remnants of the old sealant around the hatch and on the cover, and also apply a new one.

Replacing the diesel fuel filter

Thanks to the better placement of the fuel line components, the work is greatly simplified. By the way, the fuel filter on the RAV 4 of 2001 is in the same place as on modern diesel variations. To install a new part, do the following:

1. Stop the engine and depressurize the fuel line by turning off the fuel pump fuses. You can completely get rid of pressure if you start the car several times in a row. As soon as it starts to stop, you can proceed to the next steps.
2. Disassemble the air filter and pump protection elements, and also remove it. It is important not to damage the condensate level sensor.
3. Disconnect all hoses from the filter. The action must be carried out carefully: a little diesel fuel may remain in the case.
4. The new filter must be filled with diesel fuel to the brim, and the O-ring should be lubricated with fuel and everything should be put in place by connecting the hoses to the rear.

Additional work is to assemble the components in reverse order, install the fuel pump fuse and check its operation.
