Toyota introduced the Land Cruiser, adapted to transport vaccines in hard-to-reach areas. It is the first refrigerated truck for this purpose to be pre-qualified by WHO under the PQS standard. Toyota's dedicated Land Cruiser will increase the availability of vaccines in developing countries.

The Land Cruiser is a collaboration between Toyota Tsusho, Toyota Motor Corporation and B Medical Systems. The Toyota SUV was equipped with a specially designed refrigeration system to transport vaccines at the right temperature. The car prepared in this way has received a PQS (Performance, Quality and Safety) pre-qualification for medical equipment in accordance with the standards of the World Health Organization.
The specialized vehicle was built on the basis of a Land Cruiser 78. The vehicle was equipped with a B Medical Systems vaccine refrigerated truck, model CF850. The cold store has a capacity of 396 liters and holds 400 packs of vaccines. The device can be powered by the car while driving and has its own independent battery capable of running for 16 hours. They can also be powered by an external source - the mains or a generator.
WHO safety standards
PQS is a medical device qualification system developed by WHO that sets standards for medical devices suitable for the work of the United Nations, UN-affiliated agencies, leading charities and non-governmental organizations. It is also convenient for developing countries that do not have their own medical device standardization systems.

Protecting children's health
Recommended vaccines for children generally require storage at 2 to 8°C. In developing countries, about 20 percent of vaccines are lost due to temperature fluctuations during transport and distribution to hospitals and clinics. The reason for this is the poor road infrastructure and the lack of specialized refrigerators adapted for the transport of drugs. Every year, 1,5 million children die from vaccine-preventable diseases, and one of the reasons is the loss of usefulness of some drugs due to poor transportation and storage conditions.
A refrigerated all-terrain vehicle based on the Toyota Land Cruiser will increase the effectiveness of vaccination, improving the health of the population of developing countries. Moreover, a suitably adapted Land Cruiser can also be used to transport and distribute COVID-19 vaccines in countries with poor road infrastructure.
