Toyota Yaris and electric car - what to choose?

According to information provided by the Samar website, the Toyota Yaris was the most bought car in March 2018 in Poland. We decided to see if it would be profitable to buy an electric car instead.
Toyota Yaris is a B-segment car, that is, a small car designed specifically for city driving. The choice of electricians in this segment is quite large, even in Poland we have a choice of at least four models of Renault, BMW, Smart and Kia brands:
- Renault Zoe,
- bmw i3,
- Smart ED ForTwo / Smart EQ ForTwo (the "ED" line will gradually be replaced by the "EQ" line)
- Smart ED ForFour / Smart EQ ForFour,
- Kia Soul EV (Kia Soul Electric).
In the article below, we will focus on comparing the Yaris and Zoe in two use cases: when buying a car for a home and when used in a company.
Toyota Yaris: price from 42 PLN, in volume terms about 900 PLN.
The price for the base version of the Toyota Yaris (not Hybrid) with a 1.0-liter petrol engine starts at PLN 42,9 thousand, but we assume that we are buying a modernized five-door car with amenities. In this option, we have to prepare for spending at least 50 PLN.

According to the Autocentre portal, the average fuel consumption of this model is 6 liters per 100 kilometers.
To sum up:
- price Toyota Yaris 1.0l: 50 XNUMX PLN,
- fuel consumption: 6 liters per 100 km,
- Pb95 petrol price: PLN 4,8 / 1 liter.
Toyota Yaris vs electric Renault Zoe: prices and comparison
For comparison, we choose the Renault Zoe ZE 40 (R90) for PLN 132, with its own battery. We also assume that the average energy consumption of a car will be 000 kWh per 17 km, which should correspond well to the use of a car in Poland.

Finally, we assume that the cost of electricity used for charging is PLN 40 per kWh, that is, the car will be billed mainly at the G1 tariff, the G12as anti-smog tariff, and sometimes we will use fast charging on the road.
In summary:
- lease price of Renault Zoe ZE 40 without battery: PLN 132 thousand,
- energy consumption: 17 kWh / 100 km,
- electricity price: 0,4 zł / 1 kWh.
Yaris vs. Zoe at home: 12,1 thousand kilometers of annual run
With the average annual mileage of cars in Poland reported by the Central Statistical Office (GUS) (12,1 thousand km), the operating costs of Toyota Yaris 1.0l within 10 years will reach the level of only 2/3 of the operating costs of Renault. Zoe.
Neither resale in a few years, nor even free top-ups will help. The difference in the purchase price (PLN 82) and the drop in value are too great for an electric car to be an alternative if we only make a decision with our wallet.
Both schedules will overlap in about 22 years.
Yaris vs Zoe in the company: 120 kilometers daily run, 43,8 thousand kilometers per year
With an average annual mileage of almost 44 kilometers – and therefore with a car that works for itself – the electric car becomes remarkable. It is true that the schedules are reduced in the sixth year of operation, and the lease term is usually 2, 3 or 5 years, but we know from talking with you that 120 kilometers of daily mileage is a pretty low cost.
To do business, you need a range of at least 150-200 kilometers, which means that the intersection of both schedules can happen even faster.
Summation
If you are guided only by the wallet, the Toyota Yaris 1.0L at home will always be cheaper than the electric Renault Zoe. An electric car can only be helped by a surcharge of about PLN 30 or a sharp increase in fuel prices, road tax, radical restrictions on vehicles with an internal combustion engine, etc.
In the case of a purchase for a company, the situation is not so obvious. The more kilometers we drive, the faster the combustion engine becomes less profitable than the electric vehicle. With 150-200 km of travel per day, an electric car becomes a worthy choice even for a short-term rental of 3 years.
