What is the distributor for?

Many ignition systems (whether contact or non-contact) have a high and low voltage circuit. The ignition distributor is a mechanism associated with high and low voltage wiring. Its main action is to distribute high voltage between the candles at the right time and in a certain sequence.

The distributor is designed to receive a spark from the ignition coil and distribute it according to the principle of engine operation (VAZ2108/09) to other vehicle mechanisms. In addition, the distributor allows you to set the “spark” point (the part allows you to issue a controlled impulse), which depends on the number of revolutions, the total engine load and the method of setting the ignition.

The method of operation of the distributor

The part was based on a rotating roller connected to the engine camshaft. Parts of the mechanism are attached to the roller and work by rotating the roller.

The principle of operation of the distributor on the VAZ 2109

The action of the distributor depends on the operation of all elements of the mechanism. So, the distribution mechanism on the VAZ 2109 consists of the following parts:

  1. The rotor rotates and due to this it has the ability to distribute the spark through the distributor, after which it goes through the wires to the spark plugs. In the runner (another name for the rotor), the spark is fed through the ignition coil by a moving part in the center of the casing.
  2. There is a gap in the Hall sensor, and this is where the four-pin mobile screen comes in with an equal number of slots.
  3. The valve also includes a centrifugal and vacuum regulator, coupling, housing, O-ring, gaskets, base plate, thrust and lock washers, and corrective vacuum.
  4. It is also important to know that two different types of ignition distributor (i.e. distributor) with other types of covers can be installed on the VAZ 2109, 2108/099 model. By design, they are very similar and distinguish these mechanisms only by the features of the assembly of the vacuum and centrifugal regulators. Both distributor covers can be replaced with each other (since they have no differences).

Possible causes of failure

There are a number of reasons why the distributor mechanism may fail, after which it is urgent to replace the part.

  1. Cracks appeared on the deck surface;
  2. Failure of the "Sensory Room";
  3. "Corridor" burned down";
  4. Burnt contacts on the cover;
  5. Loose bearing holding the "Hall Sensor";
  6. Poor contact contacts in the sensor connectors.

There are also reasons for the appearance of malfunctions of the mechanism.

  1. It happens that the breather gets dirty and gases escape through the roller, lubricating the shutter.
  2. Sometimes there are “breakdowns” in mass due to small cracks on the cover of the distributor.
  3. With poor assembly, the mechanism quickly fails (in particular, individual parts).
  4. The bearing may become loose.

Any of these situations (apart from poor contact with the sensors) requires prompt replacement of the distributor part. But sometimes it is enough to adjust some shortcomings in the ignition systems and this will instantly return the engine to working condition.

There are a number of reasons that may indicate this situation.

For example:

  1. Too much detonation. This problem occurs due to pre-ignition due to deformation of the rings (piston). One of the symptoms is a ringing sound when you press the accelerator pedal.
  2. The dark smoke that comes out of the pipe while the car is running is a consequence of the fact that the ignition is turned on earlier.
  3. Much more fuel is consumed, but engine performance is reduced. In this case, the ignition starts too late.
  4. Uneven engine operation can be caused by both early and late starting.

In order for you to regulate the status (position) of a distributor, you will need to purchase:

  • Screwdriver;
  • Stroboscope;
  • Spanners;
  • Tachometer.

Repair of distributor vaz 2109

  1. First you need to start the engine in working condition and increase the idle speed to about 700 units. Next, you need to make sure that the operating temperature of the engine does not exceed ninety degrees Celsius.
  2. Then you need to insert the crankshaft according to the instructions on the cylinder head.
  3. After that, the wire coming out of the distribution mechanism must be connected to a twelve-volt lamp, and the other side must be grounded.
  4. Next, you need to turn off the ignition and monitor the condition of the light bulb. In the event that it catches fire, it is necessary to loosen the nut holding the detailed plate, then slowly and carefully begin to turn the distributor clockwise until the light lights up again.
  5. It is recommended to drive a short distance at medium speed (about 40-50 kilometers per hour). There are no signs of damage, so the repair was successful.
  6. With constant problems and unsuccessful repairs, it is necessary to change the part.
