Throttle valve - replacing the drive cable

Replace the throttle cable if it is stuck in the trunk or damaged

Start work only after the engine has cooled down to a safe temperature (not higher than 45°C).

1. We prepare the car for work (see "Preparing the car for maintenance and repair").

2. On engines 2112, 21124 and 21114, remove the engine cover (see Engine Cover - Removal and Installation).

3. Remove the air supply hose to the throttle (see "Throttle - Transmission Adjustment").

The hose will get in the way, especially when installing a new cable.

4. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the retaining spring and remove it from the quadrant.

5. On engines 2112, 2111 and 21114, remove the plastic end of the cable (3), unscrew the nut (2) and remove the cable from the bracket.

On the 21124 engine, remove the cable boot retainer plate and remove the cable boot from the rubber support (See Throttle - Transmission Adjustment). We remove the cable together with the rubber support from the bracket for fixing the cable sheath.

7. Turning the sector counterclockwise until it stops, remove the tip of the cable from the sector socket.

8. On an 8-valve engine, we stretch the cable with the sleeve through the plastic clamp or cut the clamp with wire cutters (during installation, a new clamp is required).

In a 16-valve engine, the work is as follows:

9. Under the instrument panel, prying with a screwdriver, disconnect the tip of the accelerator cable from the “gas” pedal lever.

10. Pull the end of the passenger compartment cable through the hole in the bulkhead of the engine compartment and remove the cable together with the rubber support.

Install the throttle cable in reverse order.

After installing the cable, we adjust the throttle actuator and install the air supply hose.

Replacing the gas cable on VAZ 2110, VAZ 2111, VAZ 2112

The gas cable - it is also the accelerator cable, by the way, it is responsible for opening this very shock absorber and closing it, thanks to this cable, you can adjust the speed by the car, that is, they pressed the accelerator, the cable stretched and at the same time the damper opened at a larger angle, so the speed increased and the car drove off (or stands still if the clutch pedal is depressed or the gear is in neutral), but this cable wears out and therefore it becomes very dangerous to drive a car, because when worn out, the metal part begins to fray (twist so to speak) and in connection with with this, pieces of the cable begin to touch the side of the hull and the cable does not return and the car starts to accelerate even more, regardless of pressing the accelerator pedal (since the cable then got stuck and goes back, the damper is not removed, so even if you remove your foot from the pedal, the car will still go forward, such a situation and it is dangerous).

Note!

To replace this cable and adjust it (and you will definitely have to adjust it), you will need: Various pliers (thin, large) and screwdrivers!

Where is the throttle cable located?

Depending on the engine, its location may vary, although not significantly, basically for 8-valve cars the cable is at the top and after opening the hood you will immediately see it (In the photo on the left it is indicated by a red arrow), on 16-valve cars of the 10th of the family, it is located at the top in exactly the same way, but just to get closer, you will need to remove the engine screen (To learn how to remove the screen, read the article: "Replacing the engine screen on an earlier 16-valve"), removing it, you will immediately see for clarity, it is indicated by an arrow in the photo on the right.

Note!

But there are some cars that were equipped with an electronic throttle from the factory, the 10th family of the Togliatti assembly was not affected, and those cars that were transferred to Ukraine (Currently, their brand has changed, and they are called Bogdan) after 2011 were equipped with this pedal , we immediately warn you that there is no cable in them, but you still check, for clarity, in the photo below, the arrow shows this same electronic pedal and it is also clear that the gas cable does not come from this!

When should the throttle cable be changed?

You should periodically check its condition, if you start to see that your metal part has begun to wear out, then you do not need to wait until the cable seizes and in general, in this case, we recommend that you immediately visit a car dealership and buy a new throttle cable and replace it by putting in place of the old one, in addition, the cable must be replaced if, when adjusting it, it is not possible to achieve full opening and closing of the shock absorber.

How to replace the gas cable on a VAZ 2110-VAZ 2112?

Note!

Replace the cable on a cold engine, and in general you need to climb on the engine only when it is cold, so as not to get burned during any work on replacing and adjusting parts!

We wanted to warn you about something else, this article shows an example of replacing a cable on two engines, that is, on an 8-valve injection and a 16-valve injection, but this article does not say a word about the carburetor engine, so if you have a car with a carburetor engine and you need to replace this throttle cable, then in this case, read the article titled: “Replacing the throttle cable on cars with a family 9 carburetor”!

Retirement:

1) First, we recommend removing the air tube, because it will interfere with the removal and installation of a new cable, it can be removed very easily, to do this, loosen the screws that tighten the clamps on both sides, and then remove the hose (the location of the screws is indicated by arrows), but at the same time disconnect the ventilation hose crankcase gases, it is attached to this pipe in the central part, using the same clamp that you will need to loosen with a screwdriver.

2) Then, with the same screwdriver, pry off the retaining spring holding the sector and thus remove it, then turn the sector counterclockwise by hand and remove the gas cable from the slot in the inlet, thanks to this operation you are already disconnecting the cable from the throttle assembly, then only little things, and by the way, in different engines (in 8 valve and in 16) this operation is the initial one (described in this paragraph 2) and is performed absolutely identically.

3) Now (this only applies to 16 valve machines) use a pair of needle nose pliers or something similar to remove the retaining plate that the cable passes through and once it is removed, remove the middle part of the cable along with the bracket rubber mount on the intake manifold as shown on the second photo.

4) But on the 8-valve cable in the central part, it is connected a little differently and to turn it off, you will first have to move the rubber cover to the side and loosen the nut at number 2, remove the central part of the cable from the bracket and then (this applies to both motors) you can either pull the cable along with the sleeve through the plastic clamp, removing it, or you can cut this same clamp with a few pliers and you can continue without hemorrhoids, and then you will need to get into the car and disconnect the tip of the gas pedal cable, this is done very easily with a screwdriver and in the end, you will have to pull the cable out of the engine compartment of the car and thus completely remove it from the car.

Please! Gasoline cable - it is also an accelerator cable, it is responsible for opening this very shock absorber and closing it, thanks to this cable, you can adjust the speed by the car, that is, you pressed the accelerator pedal, the cable stretched, and in this case, the shock absorber also opened at a larger angle, the speed increased and the car started to drive (or stop at home if the clutch pedal is depressed, in other words, if the gear is at a dead center), however, this cable wears out, for this reason it becomes very unsafe to drive a car, because with wear, its iron part begins to fray (so much twisted) and therefore the pieces of the cable begin to touch the shell and the cable does not return and the car starts to accelerate more).

Note! To change this cable to fit (and you will most likely have to fit), you will need: Different pliers (thin, large) and screwdrivers!

Where is the throttle cable located? As the engine changes its location, although not significantly, in general, for 8-valve cars, the cable is at the top and after opening the hood you immediately examine it (In the photo on the left it is indicated by a red arrow), on 16-valve cars of the 10th family, it is exactly the same located at the top, but only to get closer to it, you need to remove the engine screen (To find out how to remove the screen, read the text of the article: "Replacing the engine screen on an older 16" valve), removing it, you must immediately you will see, for clarity, on the right in the photo is indicated by an arrow.

What is a throttle cable

Under the throttle cable, car owners understand the throttle cable, which plays an important role in the proper operation of the car. A throttle valve is a structural part that allows you to keep a record (by software) of fuel supply to a gasoline engine. Its main function is to regulate the amount of air supplied to the engine for the mixture of air and fuel. This valve is located between the air filter and the intake manifold. If the throttle valve opens, the pressure in the intake system compares with atmospheric pressure. In the closed position, the pressure drops to a vacuum.

A special cable is used to open and close the throttle. This is where the main wear point of the shock absorber falls.

Automatic transmission cable or how to adjust the cable on the automatic gearbox

Let's start. Here is an example of how an automatic transmission cable is usually connected to a throttle valve, in our case an injection engine.

Now about the pressure that opposes the "accelerator". The centrifugal governor pressure is proportional to the vehicle speed. It increases as the speed increases and tries to "push" the valves on the control plate, which are supported by springs with different stiffness (they are responsible for gear shifting). If the pressure of the centrifugal governor becomes greater than the opening force of the spring of one of the valves on the adjusting plate (forget that the pressure of the throttle regulator acts with the spring also trying to distribute the spring), then the valve expands and opens the passage of dextron pressure to the clutches, so the automatic transmission shifts to the next transmission.

How to find out the timing of the throttle cable

VAZ-2110 calls for a turn? Experts advise paying attention to the following points when working with this part of the car:

• there is no way to adjust the throttle actuator;
• when you press the accelerator pedal, the shock absorber cannot fully open and close;
• the iron part of the cable began to “shake” (this should be visually noticeable when checking the internal parts of the car);
• when the throttle is working, the throttle cable constantly sticks.

If you encounter any of these problems while operating your own vehicle, you should immediately purchase a new throttle cable and replace it.

Another option for refining the gas pedal VAZ 2110

First, we remove the plastic part of the pedal and straighten the lower end of its lever, the lower end of the lever drops to the level of the lower edge of the pedal in its main position.

It approaches the floor by 3 cm. We take a piece of plastic, cut off the protrusion at the bottom and make a new groove for the lever, assemble the pedal and enjoy the result - the pedal does not actually sit under the foot, because the foot can be held at an angle of 50 degrees to the floor.

Changing the throttle cable

This procedure is carried out only with a cold engine. Otherwise, there is a risk of burns during the rope replacement work.

To correctly change this cable to the VAZ-2110, you must adhere to the following step-by-step annotation:

1. Prepare the necessary tools:
2. screwdrivers of different sizes;
3. pliers are huge and thin.
4. Remove the throttle cable:
5. the air tube is removed (this is necessary so that this part does not interfere with subsequent actions with the cable), the screws on the clamps are loosened;
6. the crankcase ventilation hose is disconnected with a screwdriver;
7. the locking spring holding the sector is removed;
8. the main part is removed manually from the groove by turning the sector counterclockwise;
9. the cable is disconnected from the throttle body.
10. Removing the cable from the bracket:
11. for 16-valve cars - the locking plate is removed with thin pliers (thanks to it, the cable is adjusted), and the central part of the cable, together with its bracket, is removed from the bracket on the intake manifold;
12. for 8-valve cars - the nut is loosened, the rubber bushing is removed, the central part of the cable is removed from the bracket;
13. the rope itself
    
    it is pulled through a plastic collar, which is pre-cut.
14. Removing the interior cable:
15. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the end of the accelerator pedal cable.
16. Removing it from the engine compartment (it is simply pulled out of the passenger compartment).
17. Installing a new part:
18. the cable is passed through the engine room;
19. one edge protrudes into the cabin, it is attached to the accelerator pedal;
20. the second edge is attached to the throttle body.

After performing the procedure for replacing the throttle cable

needs to be adjusted:

1. On the fittings of the intake pipe and the throttle body, at the junction of the large circle crankcase ventilation hose and the fitting located on the head cover, the clamps are released.
2. Checking the operation of the throttle valve
   
   (you will need the help of a colleague for this):
3. with the gas pedal fully depressed, it is fully open;
4. when the accelerator pedal is fully released, it is fully closed.

Why do I need clutch cable adjustment?

Adjusting the clutch cable is a necessary and important process in car maintenance. It is carried out in case of problems with the pedal - its stroke is more or less than necessary. In the first case, the clutch is not fully disengaged. As a result, the flywheel remains in contact with the disc that is being driven, and thereby contributes to the wear of the friction linings.

In the second case, the inclusion of the slave disk occurs partially. As a result, the vehicle's power is reduced due to the reduction in engine torque while driving. In this case, the insertion of the disc can occur quickly and with a smooth release of the pedal, which leads to audible knocks in the transmission and jerks of the machine.

If the cable is defective, the pedal may get stuck. It may seem that it is very difficult to put pressure on her, she seems to be resisting. However, if you put a lot of pressure on the pedal, it will fall to the ground because the cable will break. In this case, it must be replaced.

Repeated clutch slippage is also a sign that the cable is bad. "Slippage" - the moment the gear shifts to another position. For example, the car starts to roll in neutral, as the clutch spontaneously engaged.

"Slippage" usually occurs when the engine is overloaded. For example, during an increase in speed or climb.

In the event of a cable failure, the main indicator will be a leak. A leak can occur if it becomes disconnected or broken. In the first case, you just need to reinstall. When the car twitches, the cable does not perform its functions correctly enough.

Important! Before installing the cable itself, it is necessary to adjust the clutch pedal so that it is at a distance of 10-13 centimeters from the floor level. We have already written in more detail about how to replace the clutch on the VAZ-2112.

During clutch adjustment

To adjust, you will need to turn the bolt, which is located on the cable from the side of the gearbox. When the distance to the pedal is adjusted, tighten the nut and depress the pedal 2-3 times. If everything is in order, the housing locknut is tightened. Then the car is assembled in the reverse order.

The clutch cable must first be lubricated with LSTs-15 or Litol-24.

Throttle cable replacement:

First, use a screwdriver to move the tip of the passenger compartment cable so that it comes out from under the pedal lever finger, and remove it.

Further under the hood, next to the throttle, is the transmission sector, where the cable is attached. Fully rotate this sector and release the cable from the drive.

The next step is to remove the protective cap at the end of the cable (1). While holding the cable sheath nut (3) so that it does not turn, loosen the nut (2). Next, remove the cable from the slot in the bracket.

We pull the cable towards the engine compartment, it will come out of the hole that goes into the cabin.

This completes the dismantling. To install a new cable, follow the same steps in reverse order.

After installing a new throttle cable, it must be adjusted. Let's go through the execution order step by step.

Pedal travel

This is where the whole process begins. The factory manual states that normal travel is about 13 centimeters. Nut and locknut. But over time, the parameter increases, as the lining of the driven disk wears out.

This raises the pedal slightly. Measuring the indicator is not difficult.

1. Open the door leading to the driver's seat in the cab.
2. Squat down to get closer to the pedals.
3. Lay a straightedge on the mat under the pedal, perpendicular to the clutch pedal.
4. Measure the distance from the mat to the extreme point of the pedal, that is, the maximum distance.
5. If the indicator measures 16 centimeters or more, this indicates an urgent need for adjustment.
