Mascara for any weather - which mascara to choose?

Warm summer rain, from which you don’t want to hide under an umbrella; a hot city afternoon next to a fountain or water curtain; intense workouts in the gym or a spontaneous trip to the pool - these are situations in which even the most perfect eye makeup can turn into a “sad panda” and black stains on the cheeks in an instant. To avoid this painterly disaster, we use waterproof mascara more often in the summer.

That is why we will tell you which waterproof mascaras you should pay attention to and how to use them to enjoy beautiful eyelashes. First, a little history. Did you know that mascara is one of the oldest cosmetics?

Ancient blackberries and inventions from the turn of the century

The first "mascaras" date back to the time of ancient Egyptian women, who dyed their eyelashes with a mixture of soot, oil and protein to give their eyes depth. This trick of beauty was adopted from them by the ancient Greek women, and then, together with all the wealth of culture, passed on to the next generations of European women thirsting for beauty. Until the nineteenth century, elegant ladies who dreamed of a smooth look from under an eyelash fan used more or less sophisticated recipes for “blackened eyes”, using Middle Eastern kayal and various pigments.

It wasn't until 1860 that London-based French perfumer Eugène Rimmel attempted to create a ready-made mascara based on a mixture of coal dust and water. The product called "Superfin" - in the form of a hard cube, closed in a small box - was applied to the eyelashes with a damp, thick brush.

The next stage of the cosmetic revolution was the invention of the American entrepreneur T. L. Williams, who - thanks to his older sister Mabel, who flirted with fans with powdered charcoal eyelashes - decided to develop a new recipe for this blackening, adding petroleum jelly to it. So in 1915, the first American mascara was created called Lash-in-Brow-Line, known in the 30s as Maybelline Cake Mascara, which, despite its affordable price, did not impress with its durability.

Favorite Silent Film "Cosmetics"

With the development of XNUMXth century cinematography, actresses (and actors!) of silent films needed a reliable cosmetic product that would provide them with an expressive and dramatic look, expressing more than a thousand words on the screen.

That is why Max Factor, the leading Hollywood makeup artist of the time, created a product called "Cosmetic" - a waterproof mascara that, after being heated and applied to the eyelashes, solidified, creating a spectacular and extremely long-lasting effect. Unfortunately, it was not suitable for everyday use by elegant ladies who did not have tricks with makeup, and besides, it contained a huge amount of turpentine, harmful to the eyes and skin.

Modern innovations

A real breakthrough in the search for the perfect makeup formula was the invention of Helena Rubinstein, who in 1957 released the unique Mascara-Matic mascara, closed in a convenient metal case with an applicator in the form of a grooved rod, which covered the eyelashes. with semi-liquid mascara.

It was a real hit! From now on, painting eyelashes was - literally - pure pleasure! Over the decades, manufacturers have outdone each other with new innovations, perfecting both mascara recipes and brush shapes. Today's mascara market offers us a variety of products - from lengthening and thickening, curling and strengthening, to stimulating growth and imitating artificial eyelashes. However, today we will look at those whose manufacturers provide us with exceptional strength and resistance to tearing, rain, swimming in the salty sea and chlorinated water in the pool.

Regular or waterproof mascara?

What is the difference between regular mascara and waterproof mascara? The former are emulsions obtained by combining waxes and emulsifiers with pigments. The result is a light product with a delicate creamy texture that does not weigh down the eyelashes and is suitable for even the most sensitive eyes. Unfortunately, the consequence of such a friendly formula is a reduction in the durability of the mascara, which has no chance against moisture.

That is why in summer it is better to use waterproof mascaras, which are a practically anhydrous mixture of waxes, oils and pigments. They are extremely resistant to moisture and temperature, even sea baths. Unfortunately, they overload the lashes and are extremely difficult to remove with normal make-up removal, which can lead to additional damage to the lashes if wiped excessively with a cotton pad. Therefore, cosmetics from this shelf must be chosen very carefully, paying attention not only to its durability, but also to the composition.

Known, loved and recommended

Let's start our short review with the classics of the genre, i.e. from the cult. Helen Rubinstein and the lately fashionable Lash Queen Fatal Blacks waterproof mascara, closed in an elegant package with a pattern imitating python skin.

Where did this pattern come from? This is a reference to the unique snake-shaped brush hidden inside, which effectively lifts and curls the lashes. The formula of the mascara is based on the Ultra-Grip formula with a wax complex and a triple coating system that instantly coats the eyelashes with a creamy consistency and sets, creating a flexible coating that is resistant to moisture and water.

Equally rich in nourishing ingredients, ArtDeco All in One waterproof mascara with vegetable waxes, coconut and acacia resin boasts thickness and length. Thanks to this, eyelashes remain elastic and flexible throughout the day, and make-up is resistant to all external factors.

If we need makeup for a special occasion, let's turn to Lancome's Hypnose Waterproof Mascara, which, thanks to its innovative SoftSculpt formula with polymers, emollient waxes and Pro-Vitamin B5, makes lashes up to six times thicker without sticking, breaking or flaking. The eyelashes covered with it, as the manufacturer promises, will remain flawless up to 16 hours!

Bourjois' Volume 24 Seconde 1-Hour Waterproof Thickening Mascara is the absolute longest-wearing mascara with a round, micro-beaded silicone brush that perfectly detangles and curls lashes, covering them with an even layer of creamy mascara. Your make-up in perfect shape will withstand even the craziest party this summer.

At the end of our short review, another classic that is worth touching in the summer: Max Factor, False Lash Effect is a waterproof cream-silicone mascara, which includes special polymers and natural waxes that are resistant to water, abrasion and high temperatures. The unique formula delivers record-breaking mascara wear in all conditions, and the brush is 25% thicker than traditional brushes and has 50% softer bristles for precise brushing and an enticing fake lash effect.

Remember that the exceptional staying power of waterproof mascara goes hand in hand with the need for thorough make-up removal with special oils or biphasic preparations that perfectly dissolve the wax-polymer structure of waterproof mascara without the need for heavy rubbing of the lashes. .
