Do-it-yourself rust removal from a car

The body of the car and its bottom are made of metal, which is subject to corrosion. If you constantly use anti-corrosion agents and there is no rust on the surface of the body, this is not a fact that it is not in problem areas - under the wheel arches, on the thresholds, under the wings.

What to do if, despite all your efforts, corrosion still appears?

Removing rust and corrosion with chemicals

There are many chemical means to combat corrosion.

The easiest way is to use rust converters, for example "VSN-1".

This is a very effective remedy that contains phosphoric acid. It simply corrodes rust and after it remains a plaque that can be wiped off with a damp cloth or washed off with a stream of water.

Simple folk methods are also used, for example, a mixture of paraffin, approximately one hundred grams, per liter of kerosene. All these components are mixed and left for a day. After the solution is ready, they are treated with parts of the body damaged by rust and corrosion. Apply the substance with a rag or soft sponge and leave it in this state for 10-12 hours. Then simply erase the resulting slurry.

A remedy is also made from ordinary lard or animal fat, camphor oil and graphite grease. All these ingredients are thoroughly mixed, they are allowed to brew and cool. And then all this is applied to the surface and remains for a day. After such actions, according to experts, there is no trace of rust left.

After the rust is removed, the surfaces are machined, primed and painted.

Mechanical ways to get rid of rust

Chemicals are good, of course, but sometimes they can't help. For example, if rust is deeply ingrained, then the use of converters threatens that acid can damage the remaining thin layer of metal, and kerosene with paraffin will not have any positive effect.

In such extremely neglected cases, the most suitable method is sandblasting. But before you start processing, the car body must be thoroughly washed with shampoo and dried well so that all damage is clearly visible.

Sandblasting is carried out using a special machine that supplies air and sand under pressure. Grains of sand knock out rust and do not harm the metal, that is, its thickness does not decrease. In order not to damage the paintwork in neighboring areas that are not affected by corrosion, they are pasted over with masking tape.

Grinding is also widely used. It is carried out both with the help of special grinders, grinders and drills with nozzles, and with the help of improvised means - metal brushes and sandpaper with varying degrees of graininess. Grinding is not the most preferred method, because you erase not only the rust itself, but also the top layer of metal.

How to remove rust with your own hands?

So, if you see that corrosion is inconspicuously “eating” the body of your car, you need to urgently take action. Regardless of which method you choose to remove it, you need to do everything very carefully. If you take rust converters, then remember that they contain strong acids, so take all precautions. When working with a grinder or grinder, wear a respirator so as not to inhale particles of dust, varnish and rust.

Be sure to wear protective goggles.

When the rust is removed, the cleaned surface must be puttied. Wait until the putty dries, remove the remnants with sandpaper or a grinder with a “zero” nozzle. A primer is applied on top of the putty, and painting is already on it. Choosing the right shade is not an easy task, so check in advance whether the colors match, otherwise, instead of rust, you will get a stain that will stand out against the background of the factory paint.

If rust appears on the bottom, then you can use various anti-corrosion agents that are constantly applied and protect the bottom of the machine. Do not forget about polishing the body and processing problem areas.
