Hole saw care and maintenance

Cleaning | |
Regular cleaning will help prolong their life. Clean saw blades after each use to remove dust, chips, and sawdust that can cause the hole saw to seize (get stuck) in the material it is cutting, or even streak and damage the saw teeth. Once a hole saw has blunted to the point of being useless, it is difficult to sharpen it.
Chip cleaning | |
When using a hole saw, remember to pull the saw out of the hole from time to time. This will help clear the teeth of chips and sawdust, cool the blade and reduce the chance of damage to the tooth. Instead of retracting the hole saw in reverse, you can change the direction of the hole saw and remove chips that way.
Uniform pressure and balanced tooth alignment
When working, apply even pressure and make sure that the teeth of the hole saw evenly engage the workpiece. This will help reduce uneven sawing and prevent tooth breakage.

When cutting metals, use a high quality cutting fluid to remove chips. Cutting fluid provides a smoother cut and creates less friction, helping to keep it cooler, which will extend the life of your hole saw.
sharpening | |
There are several ways to sharpen a hole saw (all of them are quite laborious and time consuming). It is widely believed that, due to the relatively low cost of hole saws, it is preferable to replace them when they become dull.
If you want to sharpen a dull hole saw, you can use a hand file to resharpen each tooth. Small diamond files work best for this, but the process can still take some time and effort.
If you have access to a manual electric grinder, you can also use it to sharpen your hole saw teeth. While it's a little faster than doing it by hand, it still takes time and concentration.
Another option for sharpening hole saws is to use a grinder. If you attach a hole saw to a rotating vise and then angle the teeth into a grinding wheel, you can sharpen the crown. It is also time consuming and requires concentration.
If your hole saw has hardened teeth that have become dull, it may not be practical or even possible to sharpen them properly.
Replacement | |
Due to a lot of wear and friction, the hole saw is exposed during use, so it will most likely need to be replaced before the mandrel. This is an advantage when you have a removable pergola, but can be wasteful if the pergola is fixed.
Export | |
Visually inspect your tools before each use for wear, abrasions and damage.
Storage | |
Store your crowns in a safe, dry place to reduce the risk of weather damage or corrosion. |
