Humidifiers - what is it? How to use moisturizers and how do they work on hair?

You hear about them more and more, especially in the context of the PEH balance. What is this mysterious term and what does it mean in hair care? We tell you what humidifiers are and why you should use them, as well as how to choose their type depending on the needs of the strands.

Moisturizing substances in daily care are necessary not only for the skin, but also for the hair. Moisturizers are active ingredients that guarantee hydration. The term can also be used for facial cosmetics, but is most commonly used in the context of hair products. All because of the issue of PEH balance, which in recent years has made a splash among lovers and connoisseurs of conscious care and revolutionized the approach to the selection of shampoos, conditioners and masks.

PEH stands for Proteins, Emollients and Moisturizers, three substances absolutely essential to keep hair looking beautiful and healthy. Violating this delicate balance leads to all sorts of problems, from overload and loss of volume to fluffiness and static, to tangles and dullness. In turn, by taking care of it, you can get the most out of your hair.

  • Deficit

Humidifier deficiency is manifested by dullness, dryness, frizziness of hair and the so-called "haze" and dullness. Hair may become less pleasant to the touch. In the case of curly hair, the lack of moisturizers reduces frizz and makes combing difficult.

  • Excess

As with emollients and proteins, moisturizers can be overdone, but it takes a lot of effort. An excess of moisturizers is not easy to detect, as it often looks more like a deficiency. Hair can also be dry and dull. However, with an excess, there is a difference in certain areas of the hair - often hay-shaped at the ends, but hanging and smooth closer to the scalp.

Depending on the type of hair, the need for moisturizers in daily care may vary. Hair with high porosity, most often curly, needs the most moisture (although high porosity can also be the result of damage caused by coloring or heavy styling). Strands of this type have an open structure. The scales do not stick to each other, so moisturizing substances do not get locked inside. Therefore, in the case of hair with high porosity, it is necessary to use emollients that seal in moisture, preventing valuable ingredients from “slipping away”.

On the other hand, low-porous hair needs a minimum dose of moisture - they perfectly retain moisturizers in their structure.

In the case of emollients, porosity is of paramount importance in product selection. Each of the three types of hair suits its own type of oil. Oils with high porosity, due to the need for a greasy protective layer that will seal the moisture inside and highlight the curl, like non-penetrating oils, i.e. highly saturated oils. Among shampoos and conditioners for medium porosity, monounsaturated oils are worth looking out for, while cosmetics for hair with low porosity favor light, unsaturated products such as coconut oil or babasu and murumuru oils.

In the context of the choice of humidifiers, porosity does not matter much. However, it is worth knowing which substances have the greatest effect in order to be able to compare them with the need for moisture. If your hair is thirsty for water, treat it with urea, honey or glycerin.

Moisturizers in hair cosmetics are also often found in face and body care products. The most popular moisturizers include, among others, seaweed extract, aloe gel, urea, honey, glycerin, panthenol, niacinamide, vitamin A, allantoin.

Remember that in the case of medium to high porosity hair, moisturizers must be sealed with emollients, so it is worth using two types of conditioners. Moisturizing conditioners come first, followed by emollient conditioners that complete the treatment.

  • Shampoos

If you do not want to use two conditioners, it is better to choose a moisturizing shampoo that will moisturize your hair. After using it, you can use a softening conditioner to close the water in the structure of the strands. What products to choose? On the market you will find a really wide range of shampoos with different active ingredients.

For people with atopic skin or scalp problems, we recommend Emolium Deep Moisturizing Shampoo, a fragrance-free dermocosmetic.

On the other hand, people with damaged hair from years of coloring will appreciate the moisturizing power of Matrix Total Results Moisture Me Rich or Morrocanoil Hydration shampoos with argan oil and red algae extract. These are wonderful natural hair moisturizers that deeply hydrate even the most dehydrated strands.

  • Conditioners

Moisturizing supplements are also varied. Curly hair owners will find a number of conditioners on the market specifically designed to care for this type of strand. Goldwell Dualsenses Curly Twist or Basiclab Capillus are products that not only hydrate but also accentuate the curve.
