Water in the car: causes

One of the conditions for a comfortable stay in the car interior is the optimal level of humidity. Regardless of weather conditions, the car is designed so that water should not get into it. Perhaps the reason is quite banal: snow and rain enter the car along with the driver and passengers. Moisture settles on clothes, snow sticks to shoes, and gradually the liquid accumulates on the rug under your feet, turning into a “swamp”. Then it begins to evaporate, leaving condensation and a musty smell. The evaporation process can be accelerated by turning on the heater and heated seats at full power. If there is high humidity outside, it is better to limit the flow of air into the car by turning on the appropriate mode.

And if you just opened the car doors and found water in the cabin (sometimes a whole puddle)? Immediately after the first minutes of surprise, the car owner begins to look for the causes of the leak. How to act when this happens intermittently after precipitation or washing? This problem is related to seal failure. A very small hole is enough for water to begin to flow and bring inconvenience. Usually sealants and silicone come to the rescue, but sometimes you can do without them. There are several reasons why water gets into the car interior, we will talk about each of them.

Damaged rubber door and windshield seals

Rubber elements are not sufficiently wear-resistant, so from time to time there is a need to replace them. Damaged rubber does not provide a sufficient level of tightness. It is worth paying attention to how well the new seal was installed. Improper installation also leads to water entering the cabin. The geometry of the doors also matters: if it has sunk or is incorrectly adjusted, then a new seal will not correct the situation.

Problems with the air intake of the stove

If this is the case, then water will accumulate under the stove itself. The problem can be solved with a sealant. It is applied to the joints of the body and the air supply channel. Sometimes the liquid under the stove may not be water at all, but antifreeze, which seeps through pipes or a radiator.

      Clogged water drain holes

They are located in the hatch area or under the hood at the battery installation site. Drains are hoses that drain water. If they become clogged with leaves and dust, then water gets inside the car. Because of this, whole puddles may appear in the cabin, the carpet and upholstery may become wet. There is only one conclusion: monitor the drainage hoses and prevent them from clogging.

Problems with the drainage of the air conditioning system

When it's hot in the cabin (usually at the front passenger's feet) does water or damp spots appear? The air conditioner drain may be damaged. Most likely, you need to put in place a mount that has flown off the drainage tube.

Violation of body geometry due to poor-quality repair after an accident

Broken body geometry and ill-fitting panels can also lead to moisture from the street entering the cabin.

      body corrosion

If the car is old, then it is possible that water enters the cabin through cracks and holes in the most unexpected places.

      Body design features

It is not uncommon for water to enter through the antenna opening in the roof (you need to install an additional seal), through the sunroof seal (will have to be replaced) or through the holes for mounting the roof rack.

A puddle in the interior of a closed car always indicates a leak. Therefore, this should be taken seriously: all causes of leakage must be found and eliminated. Otherwise, this will lead not only to an unpleasant odor and high humidity, but also to the failure of electronic components. Therefore, check and repair everything on time, because it's nice when a car is a convenient means of transportation.
