Military SUVs of the world

Military SUVs are of particular importance both for the vehicle manufacturer itself and for the end user, which is the armed forces of a country. Such vehicles ensure the mobility of troops and the ability to quickly and reliably move between regions of any complexity.

Our review of the most interesting military SUVs.

Military SUVs from different countries

Tiger

Military SUVs of the world

This 5-ton copy can be called the pride of Russia. The powerful 10-seat multi-role armored vehicle has APC suspension, a frame structure, a 180-horsepower 5,9-liter turbodiesel engine and a body made of armor plates 5 mm thick.

The Russian developers received an order for this multi-purpose machine from the Emirates, which allocated a significant amount of $ 60 million for its development.

Although the first prototypes presented at the International Defense Exhibition in Abu Dhabi were to the taste of the customer, the contract with the designers was terminated.

However, the qualities of the "Tigers" were highly appreciated by the Ministry of Defense, whose interest led to the fact that off-road vehicles went into mass production at the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant.

The current value of such a vehicle, the only drawback of which can be called the inability to swim, is $ 100-120.

"Cossack"

Military SUVs of the world

An interesting Ukrainian development, which was released in 2009. It was not accepted for military service, although it had excellent characteristics: a weight of 5,5 tons, a 176-horsepower turbodiesel engine from the world famous manufacturer Iveco, a capacity of 5 people, an anti-mine bottom.

In addition, the developers presented a three-piece design, each of which was independently attached to the chassis. The idea was to at least partially save the car in the event of an accident at the mine.

In 2009, the car was presented to the general public at the Independence Day parade in Kyiv, after which three copies were made, and then the project was frozen.

IVECO LMV

Military SUVs of the world

The conflict in the Balkans in the 1990s gave impetus to work on all-terrain vehicles and armored vehicles of all kinds. During the war, many machines were tested, which made it possible to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various machines.

In the case of Iveco, excellent mine resistance, impenetrability against small arms fire of 5,56 and 7,62 mm caliber and protection against heavy machine guns were provided at the design stage thanks to mounted passive armor modules.

The car is almost completely assembled from parts and assemblies of commercial models, which reduces both its cost and subsequent repair and maintenance costs.

At the time of its release in 2001, the LMV was the only SUV in its class with an integrated anti-mine system, which was an integral part of the car's chassis.

Mercedes Gelandewagen

Military SUVs of the world

At a time when the lion's share of the company's shares belonged to the Iranian Shah Mozammad Reza Pahlavi, with his light hand, the military-oriented G-Class began its victorious march around the world.

The W461 modification is still in demand today, being an SUV for specific operating conditions, therefore it is actively used by the military and special services.

Now it can be found in the armies of dozens of countries, including Germany, Canada, Australia, Egypt and even the United States. America, despite its patriotism, gave preference to the Bavarian automotive industry, since their HMMWVs did not pass the dimensions of the CH-53 helicopter.

If the civilian model is considered almost the standard of comfort and luxury, then the military version is the good old military "truck".

It has a rigid transmission, which is even more noticeable with an increase in engine power, a suspension that can withstand asphalt and off-road, an interior that can be compared with the domestic UAZ.

Off-road can be found in a badged short wheelbase version, or a long wheelbase version with an all-metal body or a short cab that turns the truck into a pickup truck.

Oshkosh L-ATV

Military SUVs of the world

This adventurous American ATV was created to replace the traditional Humvee, so not only does it have high flotation ability, it's skydiving capable and heavy enough to be transported by military air transport.

Unlike its off-road counterpart, the car received light but durable armor with enhanced ballistic and mine protection. The independent adaptive suspension allows the driver to automatically or manually adjust the ride height up to a distance of half a meter.

In the 4-seat version, the car weighs just over six tons and houses a 6,6-liter V8 diesel engine from General Motors.

A hybrid configuration with electric units and a 300-horsepower diesel unit is also possible. Both engines are paired with an automatic transmission capable of accelerating the SUV to 110 km/h. Economical and reliable engines allow the car to travel about 500 km on one gas station.

Finally, the car immediately received 2 levels of protection: level "A", consisting of basic armor, and level "B" with enhanced protection.

Renault Sherpa

Military SUVs of the world

Developed for the military, the vehicle has repeatedly taken part in the Dakar Rally and the extreme cross-field rally of over 30 miles.

The tactical model has occupied the empty space between classic SUVs and full-fledged military trucks.

A high ground clearance of 600mm with a 60-degree approach angle provides good flotation and ability to climb 45-degree hills, as well as navigation through 750mm-deep waterways.

Excellent technical characteristics and growing popularity gave impetus to the manufacturer to release a civilian version in three versions:

  • 4-seat scout for hunters and racers;
  • Carrier, which is a chassis with a cab and the ability to install all kinds of platforms - onboard, dump trucks;
  • Station Wagon, with an armored body and a load capacity of one and a half tons, is suitable for the safe transportation of goods such as bank cash.

Toyota Mega Cruiser

Military SUVs of the world

The manufacturer's largest all-terrain vehicle to date, the heavy-duty Toyota Mega Cruiser is designed to carry personnel or wounded soldiers, patrol difficult terrain, and even carry field artillery and compact air defense systems.

The design of the model is based on a spar frame, and many key parts were borrowed from earlier cars, including a turbodiesel, a 4-speed automatic transmission from the Land Cruiser 80 and a steering wheel from the Toyota Carina.

The car also received an independent double wishbone suspension, permanent all-wheel drive with a differential lock and a system for remotely changing the pressure in the rear tires.

The car was sold exclusively in Japan and was purchased by the police and fire departments for official use.

Dongfeng Armor

Military SUVs of the world

In 2003, the DFM brand created a special division to work on 4×4 models, and the first mass-produced vehicle was the Dongfeng Armor, an all-wheel drive military SUV, which consumers called the Crazy Soldier.

From the outside, it resembles a prominent civilian version of the Hummer, and even received an American Cummins 4B TA A diesel engine and a 5-speed gearbox as a technical filling.

But in terms of comfort, the Chinese version is much superior to its ascetic American “colleague”, equipped with air conditioning, GPS, night vision system and radio communication.

In addition, it can be equipped with several types of weapons: a machine gun, a grenade launcher, and even an anti-tank missile system.

Despite the fact that Chinese manufacturers cannot boast of great experience in the production of military equipment, the resulting car is no different from other representatives of all-terrain vehicles.

However, it clearly wins on price, especially when compared to the iconic Hummer. As a result, in the 2000s, all-terrain vehicles, mainly in armored versions, were available to the marines, rapid reaction units, artillery and engineering troops of the PLA.

Conclusion

The army needs special vehicles - armored, off-road, rugged and extra rugged off-road vehicles. Military units of different countries are equipped with various and interesting models.
