Kia recently published a price list for the e-Niro in Poland. I felt it was a good time to question - and therefore check out - plans to purchase a reserved Volkswagen ID.3 1st.

Why only ID.3 and e-Niro? Where is Tesla Model 3?

If for some reason I had to drop ID.3 anyway, I would only consider Kia:

Nissan Leaf scares me with problems with fast charging (rapidgate). Also, it has a Chademo connector and not a CCS connector. Therefore, I would not use Ionita chargers. I expect Europe to ditch Chademo in the future. I suspect the Leaf will sell worse and worse as more sophisticated cars force it out of the market.

I collect the remaining cars in one go: I'm looking for a compact one (so segments A and B are too small for me) that will work as a single universal car (so I assume a minimum of 400 km WLTP and fast charging, 50 kW is too slow ). I also refuse all cars more expensive than ID.3 1st Max (> PLN 220).

Therefore this The e-Niro is a car that I consider to be a real alternative to the ID. in case something goes wrong.

With both ID.3 and e-Niro, I don’t have a complete picture... In the case of Kii, the missing pieces of the puzzle are much smaller, but I'm still doing some extrapolations here. So I think it will be a pretty reliable approximation.

In addition, I use information collected in person at the Kii showroom, official Volkswagen emails, YouTube content and others. I also make some guesses and guesses. So I understand that in some respects it may still turn out differently..

Kia e-Niro and Volkswagen ID.3 – power reserve and charging

In the case of the e-Niro, the technical data is indicated in the price list. For ID.3, some of them were given in different places. I don’t know if they are all somewhere in the same place, and I don’t remember which of them were served, where and when.

First things first - the battery and power reserve. The net power is 64 kWh for Kia and 58 kWh for Volkswagen.... Ranges according to WLTP respectively 455 km and 420 km... The real ones will probably be a little lower, but I prefer to use the same for comparison, that is, the WLTP values ​​stated by the manufacturer.

None of the cars in the Polish specification have a heat pump, although Kia does offer a “heat exchanger”. The heat pump for the e-Niro is supposed to be ordered but is not included in the price list. Due to the mentioned exchanger, I am guessing that the ID.3 may lose a lot of range in winter.

In theory, both machines are loaded with up to 100 kW. All videos show that However, the power of the e-Niro does not exceed 70-75 kW. and maintains that speed up to about 57 percent. It would be good to ask Kia where the 100kW is - unless they improved something on the 2020 model because those videos showed the pre-facelift model. However, I have not heard of such an improvement.

As for ID.3, I actually saw a video clip somewhere showing ID.3 uploading on a 100kW Ionity. True, I do not remember what the battery charge was then. However, I think there is a chance of getting a good loading curve. At an event in Germany, it was said that the focus was on maintaining charging power rather than high peak power.

The Audi e-tron also has a very good charging curve. So I expect that ID.3 will load much faster than e-Niro even if the charging curve was not as good as in the e-Tron.

On AC, both machines charge just as quickly - up to 11 kW (three-phase current).

Verdict: Despite the slightly better range and heat exchanger in the e-Niro, I accept the winning ID..

In the city, both of these cars have too much range, but on the road, charging speed, in my opinion, is more important. At 1000 km, I expect the Bjorn Nyland ID.3 test to outperform the e-Niro.... Since I partially rely on guesswork, it will only become clear after a while whether my predictions are correct.

Technical data and performance

In this case, there is not much to write about, because it is similar: both cars have engines with the power 150 kW (204 hp). The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h is 7.8 seconds for the Kii and 7.5 seconds for the ID. according to one of the official prebooker emails. Despite this e-Niro torque He is higher 395 Nm vs 310 Nm for Volkswagen.

An important difference is that The ID.3 is rear-wheel drive., till e-Niro in the foreground... It is worth noting that thanks to this, Volkswagen has a very small turning radius, which was demonstrated on the track near Dresden.

Verdict: Draw. ID.3 has in fact a minimal advantage, but too small to even be taken into account when making decisions.

Vehicle dimensions and practical measurement

ID.3 is a compact hatchback (C-segment), e-Niro is a compact crossover (C-SUV segment). However, there are a few more differences.

Despite the fact that e-Niro 11 cm longerTo The ID.3 has a 6,5 cm longer wheelbase.... Volkswagen boasts the same amount of space in the rear as in the Passat. I do not compare with the Passat, but I have seen and confirm that there is a lot of legroom. Interestingly, the ID.3 is only three centimeters shorter than the e-Niro, despite not being a crossover.

Kia also offers a significantly larger luggage compartment - 451 liters compared to 385 liters in the ID.3. Both of these racks fell victim to Bjorn Nayland and his banana crates. The ID.3 pleasantly surprised me with just one box less than the e-Niro (7 versus 8).... Bonus point for ID.3 for the ski hole in the back seat.

I don't know if anything can be attached to the rear or towed to the Kia. ID.3 towing does not allow for sure. However, this will allow you to attach a rear bike rack (this option will not be available initially in the 1st version, but it will apparently be possible to install it later). When it comes to roof racks, the e-Niro supports them unequivocally. For ID.3, the information was different. While there is a chance that the rack can be installed on the roof, for now I prefer to assume that this is not possible.

Verdict: e-Niro wins. More luggage space and the confidence to be loaded onto the roof will make packing your Kia on a vacation for four or even five people much easier.

The interior of the e-Niro and the ID.3 are completely different concepts.

Kia is definitely there traditional – we have A/C knobs, a quick access bar, mode buttons and lots of buttons. In the central tunnel there is a drive mode knob and a rather large armrest with a storage box. Kia will win with plastic qualitywhat the ID.3 is often criticized for (although perhaps the production version will make a slightly better impression than the prototypes - this is unknown. In the end, I prefer to judge by what I saw).

The e-Niro has a material on the front door that flexes slightly under pressure – unfortunately, Volkswagen covered it with the usual hard plastic. At the back, both cars are equally rigid. Overall, the Kia has slightly softer materials – so in terms of interior quality, the Kia should have an advantage. Let me remind you that I estimate the interior based on the Niro hybrid, which I saw at the Kia showroom..

Conceptually ID.3 is worth definitely closer to Tesla, but not as radical... Volkswagen is trying to find a middle ground and combine practicality with modern purism and spaciousness. In my opinion, even though the plastic is too cheap, the inside of the ID.3 is pretty good. I would like to customize the interior color for 1ST. I dream of combining black and body color, but unfortunately there is no such option. Fortunately, the black and gray version also looks good.

The biggest plus of the ID.3 interior, in my opinion, is its rethinking.... It looks like the designers have really thought about how to take advantage of the electric drive instead of simply removing the interior from the Golf. The drive mode lever and parking brake have been moved closer to the steering wheel, leaving room for large storage compartments in the center.

I like the idea of ​​"bus" armrests - they increase the capacity of the car and give the passenger access to the glove compartment even when the driver uses the armrest. The touchpads on the steering wheel can take a while to get used to, but then with a swipe of your finger, it gets a few notches louder than pressing the button multiple times.

A climate control touchpad can be a good option between knobs and screen temperature controls.

But ID.3 has another advantage - a translucent screen.... It is a pity that the e-Niro is not offered, despite the fact that it is becoming an increasingly frequent piece of equipment, even in small cars and in the Hyundai Kona Electric from the same concern. While it's not known how much the augmented reality advertised by Volkswagen will bring, it can be assumed that the ID.3 will get a large and readable HUD that will show us more than current speed.

Verdict: very subjective, but still ID.3.

Although the interior of the e-Niro is made from slightly better materials, the ID.3 wins in my opinion for its spaciousness (I mean more feel and smaller buildings than the actual amount of space) and thoughtfulness. On the one hand, I like the reduction in the number of knobs and buttons, and on the other, some idea that ergonomics should not suffer much. And I like the interior more visually.
